Thanks 4 our nail *****!
WOW Hi
I feel so free now that I can finally post. :drunk:
I shaved my head over a year ago and I rocked the bald look. (I had to do some reprogramming and I tend to go to the extreme) So after that I had fun wearing wigs and my bald head on a rotation. I really had to adjust to the idea that I could grow long hair. Not just long hair PRETTY hair.
Well now I truly do have faith after a year of looking a the progress you all have made. So I stopped shaving my head, since November I have just let it grow under my wigs.
Now its really short but I have some hair so I took off my wig a few days ago and decided that I have to start taking care of it.
Then I proceeded to make ridiculous ROOKIE mistakes.:wallbash:
The worst was the last one when I found out the hard way I am very allergic to Castor Oil and it doesn't help it if its just used externally.
OMG I have not been so sick in years.:badidea:
Anyway I have learned a few lessons this week like not using Castor oil, I think my hair may hate protein, but most importantly I needed to become a card carrying LHCF member. :yep:

So this is a close up of my hair Any advise you ladies can give would be helpful.

I would love to know what type hair I have. I know its a mix because some hair is bone straight and the rest is a very tight pencil size curl.
I make most of my own stuff so any recipes especially a co-wash would be amazing.

This pic is of me today after DCing
Saturday with shea, coconut, honey and glycerin (my hair liked)
Sunday with egg, mayo EVOO, honey (my hair hate yucky hard)
Monday with honey, shea, EVIL CASTOR OIL, (got so sick did not notice hair)
Early Tuesday co-wash with HE LTR over and over all day till castor oil was removed.-------> took picture.

Welcome! Your hair is beautiful. You look 4aish, definitely kinky coily.

Ok so I have to ask. You're allergic to castor oil? What kind of reaction did you have? And are you saying you drank it? Cuz ummm I know castor oil is considered a laxative. Castor oil is my BFF (I use it every day) so I can't imagine being allergic to it.

You may want to try the caramel treatment since you like mixing your own stuff. It's an all natural DC, made with bananas, honey, blackstrap molasses, wheat germ oil, and acv. Let me see if I can find the thread.
ETA: Here it is... http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=126629

Use the original recipe posted by Lucky's Mom...she knows her stuff.

Anyway, I use coconut milk as a cowash. I buy the organic kind in the can, full fat, with the least amount of preservatives. I'm going to start making my own though. Anyway, I just pour it on, leave on while I shower, and then rinse at the end.

Neat, you use coconut milk for a cowash that is awesome I will get some on my next shopping trip. Do you cowash everyday with it?
The Castor oil was just mixed into my DC and I got dizzy and then all heck broke out I was sick from top to bottom. Then and still I'm shaky and I can't hold anything down. Its better because I think all the castor oil is gone but in the shower it just ran down my body and the heat opened my pours making it worse after the 1st shower and better after the 2nd, 3rd and 4th. :perplexed

Ok that is the weirdest thing I've ever heard. I've never heard of anyone being allergic to castor oil. I don't know what I would do without it. Are you allergic to other plant/bean based things?

I don't use coconut milk everyday, though I'm sure you could. I have done it for a few days in a row and it was fine. I figure since coconut oil has such great properties, then coconut milk is probably just as good. And it helps that it's a light protein so I feel like my hair is getting some strength.

No I'm never allergic to anything but it was so weird and I could sooooo tell it was the castor oil. I thought I had gotten it all this morning and then as soon as I left for the day and started sweating I was sick again. I guess its just not for me.:nono:
Well I do remember once having an allergic reaction to sandalwood maybe they have similar properties. :perplexed
But no more Castor oil for me my hair likes shea and I think it likes coconut. I had this weird coconut oil I got in a jar from whole foods and it made my hair dry. But I just bought coconut oil from the African store and it smells like the real stuff I'm afraid to do another DC but I may put it on my dry hair before I go to bed. This site is making me an insominac, I can't stop reading and its 4:13 in the morning!

Welcome! Since your hair likes shea and coconut, you can mix up some pure shea butterand coconut oil with a splash of aloe vera gel. Moisturizes nicely. My hair loves shea butter and I use it at least three times a week.

I also have to cosign with msa on the caramel treatment. I did my first one this weekend and my hair is so soft. It's freezable and all the ingredients can be had at the grocery/natural foods store. Can't get better than that.

Welcome. I cut my hair to length yours is now back in March '07. Trust me, the first year goes by so fast. It seems like hair just shoots out the first year. :) So have fun with it.

Your hair is very pretty!

Welcome to the board.

As for hair types you may not get a real sense of what it is until it is longer so don't worry too much about that. As you mentioned you may have two or three textures on your head and that is just fine. Many of us do have multiple textures.

You sound like me when I first started I would go extreme with what I would do with my hair. I would just give a little caution to that because you want to be sure your hair responds positively to what you are doing.

I might suggest trying a few things for a few days or for a week or two since you had that allergic reaction. You don't know if one product one day my react to another product you use the next day such as your routine you noted above.

We want you around here for a long time and we want you to reach your hair goals so you can get out there and teach others and show them you can grow healthy black hair from a bald fade to whatever length you are wanting to reach.

Enjoy your hair journey and many blessings.

PS. Love your siggy your pictures are FIERCE!!!!!
