I'm NEVER giving advice to anyone again! (kinda long)

tiffers

Whisper "bleep boop" to yourself when you're sad.
Yesterday, we went to dh's grandma's house for turkey day. When we walked through the door, everyone started oohing and ahing over my hair. Talking about how thick and long it is. What have I been doing to it, etc, etc.

Dh's aunt, the ''hairdresser'' of the family comes over to me and puts her hands ALL in my hair, flippin it around, touching my scalp and examining it. She said my hair was thick and I needed to keep doin what I was doin. Then she asked if I had blowdried it, I said yes, and I flatironed too. Then she told me that I didn't get it straight enough, and to let her do it again with her flatiron because her flatiron gets super hot. She said ''Yeah, it's right over there and it's still hot. I just did my daughters hair, see?'' I look over at her daughters hair, it was SL and thin with almost see through ends (she's only 9) :nono: I told her no thank you, because I don't use heat often and my hair had had enough abuse that day. She looked at me like I was crazy.

Dh's mom was on the couch with her hair back in a big dry puff. She had just washed it. She had beautiful thick hair, but her edges are GONE, and she was complaining about how much hair she's been losing lately. She then proceeds to rake through her DRY CRUNCHY hair with a superfine tooth comb. I could actually HEAR the hairs snapping  So I tried to be subtle and playfully ask ''You're not gonna put anything on your hair?'' She said ''Naw, girl'' So I say ''If you put a little leave-in conditioner in your hair, you'd probably lose less. There'd be less friction'' She said ''Naw, uh-uh, my hair don't like having stuff in it. I like to comb it dry, just like this to stimulate my scalp'' :ohwell:

Dh's aunt was getting ready to go to a club and she said she was gonna wash her hair to get it ready to flatiron it. Now this woman used to have almost APL hair, but every time I see her, it's getting shorter and shorter. Right now, it's barely SL when soaking wet and it's super thin with see through ends. Not too long ago, she cried to dh about how she's losing her hair and will do anything to grow it back. So anyway, she washes her hair in the sink and lathers up like 3 times with shampoo mixed with dishwashing liquid, used no conditioner and dried her hair with a towel. I've never seen someone rub a towel so hard on their head, I amost started cringing and had to look away. Then she starts blowdrying her hair with the highest setting while roughly BRUSHING her hair with a plastic bristle brush. After that, she went into the kitchen with TWO flat irons, both on the highest setting, and went over her already straight hair TWICE with each flatiron. Then she sprayed her hair with Elasta shine spray and flatironed AGAIN. By this point, I could hardly breathe because the house was flooded with burnt hair fumes, I just have to say something. So I asked her ''Do you ever use anything on your hair when you flatiron it?'' She answers ''Not all the time, sometimes I use oil or grease'' I told her '' Using a serum would be a lot better, it sort of protects your hair from the heat, using grease and oil pretty much fries your-'' She interrupts me ''No, nuh-uh. My hair grows when I use grease to flat iron it. It gets thicker too.'' Me: :perplexed: Then she tells me how I should flat iron more so I won't have to perm that often. I told her I only relax once every 3 months and she says that she can't go that long because it's almost been two months for her and she needs to relax again. She had NO new growth, not even a smidgeon :ohwell: I explained to her that it would be best if she waited until she got more new growth, and she should give her hair a little break from relaxing because that's one of the things that got my hair healthier. She told me that she HAD to get a perm because her hair needed to be tamed. I was thinking ''yeah, all 6 strands of it''

All of the women in dh's family have one or all of the following: No hair, thin hair, see through ends, bald edges. They all know I'm into haircare because dh tells them all the time, and they see how my hair's grown. And even though what they're doing is making them BALD, they STILL won't take any advice or hints. They swear up and down, and will argue till the cows come home that what they're doing works :wallbash: I'm just so freakin frustrated :angry2: I'm NEVER giving anyone any unsolicited advice again!

well maybe they'll wait until they're completely bald- and you're waistlength- to take your advice:nono:- hey, you tried

Some people have to learn the hard way. No sense in driving your great hair self nuts worrying about their hard heads.

BTW... Your kids are so cute. But, I don't think I'd mess with your little one. She looks like she could take me.

This is why I no longer give out hair advice.

bwahahahahahaha :lachen::lachen::lachen: Girl they are gonna be bald by New years. Just let them do what it do and worry about you and yours. Some people are not open to assistance of any kind.

Yeah, it would have probably went over better, had they asked for it.

Girl, dont feel bad, people have to want the help, and realize they are destroying their own hair. Many times we are a victim of AA hair traditions passed down, you may be the first generation that breaks the ignorance. Friends and family are starting to take note of my hair too and some are adopting my regimen. I just let the results speak for themselves. It also seems like, laziness, frustration, and ignorance about our hair are hard habits to break. People want it easy.

Whew! Seems like you ran right up against a basic human need.....the NEED to be right, Tiffers. Add the need to be right to pride.....you get the scenario you experienced yesterday, where you were "casting your pearls" ......You know, the beginning of open-mindedness is humility.

Now, if you stay open to sharing, though, you will know when there is someone who will listen to you and heed your advice, and you'll both be the better off for it. Thanks for trying, though.

She used shampoo mixed with DISHWASHING LIQUID??!! :wallbash: I wouldn't use that on my dogs hair. I told you in another thread to just be blunt and tell them "your hair looks like ish" What are they gonna do about it? They need someone to just tell it like it is and not be so nice like you are.

My family is blunt. They will tell me in a minute if my hair looks like ish or if I'm gettin too fat or if my hair looks like its thinning or something. And i appreciate their bluntness.

Abd the hairstylist in the family is clueless too? How does she stay employed?

You should shock his entire family one day and put it ALL OUT ON THE TABLE about how their haircare habits arent working and tell them what you are REALLY thinking. And then smile and walk away.

:lachen: Girl, you had me crackin up! I WISH I could be that blunt, I'm way too shy and softspoken to say anything like that  Can we switch personalities for a day?

I know how you feel...a few months ago, I was over my MIL's house and my SIL was putting a relaxer in her hair, she put the relaxer on her entire head from ROOT to the ENDS!:perplexed...I said you should only put the relaxer on the new growth not the whole head and MIL said "my hair is really course and i have do it like this"...I told her that will cause her hair to break off bc its overprocessing it and she said well, she has been doing it like that for years...then i realized that is why in the 7yrs i have known her, her hair has never budged from above her ears and is very see thru:ohwell:

Seems like they never asked for your input. Just keep your mouth shut, they obviously don't want assistance. Some folks are just like that, can't be mad at them.

What makes this situation even sadder is the fact that most black women share these opinions and think it's are gospel law. Try to give them another view and they'll argue you down. :perplexed

Just yesterday I relaxed my mom's hair. She sees and has been bragging to my grandmother how long my hair has gotten. So I'm getting ready to relax and I tell her I need some condish to protect the already relaxed strands and she says " Naw I put it all the way down" meaning relaxing from root to tip. WTF! Now she did have some major newgrowth but I still told her that doing that is not healthy and that's the reason she has ratty looking broken off hair now. It's dry lifeless almost shoulder length (and has been forever) but so raggedy looking :nono:. Nevertheless she states "I've been perming for a long time" and I'm like yeah and what do you have to show for it. Thank god she hasn't done my relaxer in forever and I now know why my 13yo sister's hair was a mess. From now on I'm doing sis's relaxers. Damn shame she see's my hair and I tell her what I'm doing and she totally ignores it so you know what, I did just what she told me. :ohwell: From now on, no more advice for mommy! She's on her own!

I can relate, even though my hair is no where close to being long, it is thick and healthy. The small picture was taken in April of this year and the other one was taken around September of this year. A big difference in growth and health. My two sisters were recently here and wanted to know what I did to get my har to grow and get so thick, well before I could finish telling them about the DC I did 2x per week, they both said it was too much work, so I just stopped trying to tell them. Their loss my har gain :lachen:.

I know exactly how you feel :nono: but you know what I just look at them say whatever... I no longer offer any advice and they will never put their hands in my hair again....Keep doing what you do b/c its obvious its working for you...:yep:

Girl u can't help everybody. I realized that a few weeks ago myself.:lachen:
It was nice of u to try.:yep:

ITA. I don't do advice outside of this board anymore...PERIOD. Even if they do ask, they don't always want to hear what you have to say...:ohwell:

:lachen::lachen: I'm sorry, but I'm cracking up over the "Dish Liquid". This is exactly why I no longer give advice. Sometimes even when they ask for advice, they don't listen :ohwell:.

Girl, you should write a book! I think all black women can relate!:lachen::lachen: When they see your hair getting longer and theirs getting shorter, maybe they will listen then....

Hey tiffers, Im sooo sorry that happended... Girl there was a litttle bit of jealousy mixed in there too.... They are so prideful that they cant humble themselves to listen to someone who obviously is seeing results.... That is sooo pitiful.... My inlaws were here too, and they commented on my hair.... I cant tell you how many products I raved about... My dh's grandma got some lenzi' s request and boundless tresses for her balding areas... The rest of them just looked at me like i was crazy... You wash your hair once a week???? They want a quick fix, nothing that takes dedication and diligence.... I guess I should have just suggested weaves....:ohwell:

This is why I no longer give out hair advice.

True. All of my friends are LCHFers or lurkers so they help me out. W4BSL has had to pull the brush out of my hands a couple of times, like "thats enough.":lachen: Sometimes you don't even realize your still doing those bad habits. Thats why they are HABITS! My roommate and mother are that way. My mother takes most of my advice but still relaxes and colors after 2 weeks. My roommate cannot stop believing in black hair stereotypes.

I cringed at the things you described! It's hard not to want to help someone when he or she is doing something incorrect, but some people don't want to be helped. The best thing is to let those people be.

I've experienced situations like this while in the hair salon. Often when I walk through the door my former stylist use to tell me that my hair was growing and it looked nice. No sooner than I started to tell my secrets my hair would magically become damaged and need of a relaxer or color to coat the strands (WTF)
Its so funny that they always recommend there highest service. Basically, I don't tell anyone what I do unless i'm asked and even then I give them the basics unless I can tell that there feeling what I'm saying.

Women of color have so much historical baggage with regards to hair it is going to takes years and I mean a lot of them possibly even a couple of generations before the mindset changes and the hair routines.

I was giving hair care advice last night, I must admit it was received favorably but it has taken about 5 years for it to sink in.
