I'm NEVER getting another blowout!

It's probably worse for you now that you are stretching because the thick roots can really hold in the heat! I did those blowouts about three times before I realized how damaging they can be to the hair stand over time. I am learning to deal with the fact that maybe, for me, straighter is not always better. I am learning alternative styles to hold me over while I stretch.

I attempted the blow-out at a dominican shop also. At the time I was on the fence between staying natural afro-style and dreds. The pain of the blow dryer knocked me off the fence and into locs!:rosebud:

Never really had a problem with the Dominican shop I go to. My hair is extremely thick and those sisters work it out for me. I've been going to other shops for years and they always wanted to over process my hair and cut it because of the thickness. I was told my hair needs to be thinned out. Anyway I guess the Dominican shops are just like any other shop they are good one and bad ones. When I get a blow out I only get my roots done and the use a comb instead of a brush. I never feel the heat I guess it the way the hold the blow dyer. I’m sorry your experience wasn’t a good one. I wish I could take you to my shop.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. But I agree, it may be the stylist. Not to say that blowdryer isn't hot, but I've had an experience like that where my eyes literally watered from this one stylist. I couldn't understand why her blowdryer was SO HOT I felt like a child who couldn't sit still. Luckily, I had been getting blowouts before her and they weren't so bad, or I would've never gone back either.

My 8 yr old gets dominican blow-outs and she doesn't complain, I just asked her was her scalp sore and she said, "No," so maybe it's the stylist.

I'm with you Hair Peace. The first time I went to a Dominican salon, there were literally tears in my eyes. It got better as time went on, but I still had to brace myself.

I recently switched salons, and the pain seems to get worse every time I go. It seems like the top/middle of my head is getting more and more sensitive to it. I'm 10 weeks post and I look like I have a fresh relaxer. But is it really worth it just for straight roots??? Umm, yeah... LOL  I'm thinking they must be using a stronger dryer than the other place.

But seriously, don't put yourself thru that agony if you really can't take it. Who knows what kind of damage it is doing to the scalp. One of my goals for 2006 is to find an alternative because I don't want this to cause a problem in the long run.

Don't worry ladies. The only thing I'll be going back to them for is the rollersets. It's hard to find a stylist in Detroit that does them (and at that price). My days of getting blowouts are over!

I'll be in twists until the end of February, then it's back to the old flat iron for this chica! As far as blowouts go...no mas! no mas!

I totally understand what you ladies are going through.

I've only had maybe 2 or 3 dominican blowouts in my lifetime, but after the 3rd I was like: "HEEEEECK NO!"

Sure, my hair was bouncy and really straight at 10 weeks post, but at what price?? That hair dryer was HOTTER than HOT! I don't think I've EVER felt heat that hot before! Not even with the curling iron!

I can't see how doing dom. blowouts on a regular basis can be healthy for the hair. :nono: It's even worse if you have relaxed hair. I don't care if they only blow the "roots", that heat travels down the hair shaft I'm sure. :yep:

That heat from the blowdryer had me in tears. Literally! I tried to play it off, but it hurt so bad. Plus, my edges looked so thin and whispy when I got home. Maybe some people can take the heat, but I learned early on in my hair care regime that dom. blowouts are NOT for me. My edges were almost non-existent after that one blowout. I'm STILL suffering the effects from it because my hair is really fine naturally, and so I don't think dom blowouts are a good thing for my hair.

Oh well...you live and you learn!

Couldn't agree with you more. But that just goes to show that there are good salons and bad ones dominican/african american/whatever. Personally, I wouldn't be able to stretch w/o getting my roots blown out. My hair gets straight enough with the rollerset, so I've never had a problem.

Sorry you had that experience though...I'd try a shop recommended by some of the ladies on the board of you wanted to give it another go. Good luck!

I went to the shop I used to go to while I was in NY last week and she didn't burn me! I'm just glad to know that there are people who know what they're doing when it comes to that hot a$$ dryer!:)
