I'm NEVER getting another blowout!

I just got back from the dominican salon this morning. I usually don't get a blowout in the first place because I just don't like all that heat from under the dryer and then the blowout! But being that I'm 9 weeks post, on the April Fools stretch and I'm going to a black tie event tongiht, I decided to give it a try.

OMG!! The heat was unbearable! I was literally in tears!
I kept jumping everytime the heat got to me. I wouldn't be surprised if I had burns from the dryer on my scalp. The stylist was really trying to be nice, but I just can't believe how hot that !@#n blowdryer was! She turned it down a little, but it was still just too hot!

I'm pretty sure everybody had a good laugh at my expense, but I just can't take the heat. I'll admit my hair is straighter than when I just get a rollerset and then flatiron the roots when I get home, but is that going to work from now unitl April? I really thought blowouts were going to be the main thing to get me through.:(

It can be hot but there are some stylist that can get the job done with out having to apply the blower to close to the roots or not leave it there too long.

Sorry for the bad blow out it really is helpful at when your in between touch ups.

I had been sort of wanting to try a dominican blowout after reading so much about it here, but when i went for my touch up the other week, i let my brother blow dry my hair instead of rolling it so I could check the length, and that darn blow dryer had smoke coming out of it (for real, not joking) and that's when i decided that i didn't think i could deal with the heat. (not to mention the yanking on my head!)

Sorry you had a bad experience:(

Hello Hair Peace,

The dryer literally brings tears to my eyes also. The thing is that I love the outcome and you know what they say, "no pain no gain." It helps me to stretch and I only do it every two weeks when I'm not in braids.

Your in good company. My scalp was tender for days. I don't know where they get those 5,000 watt dryers from! lol

Oh heck no! They could damage your scalp like that! Ive been burnt a ime or two but never during the whole process. I say find a skilled worker hat knows how opoint the blow dryer so that it only hits your hair or just for go them all together... Sorry you had such a bad expeience

Girl i totally understand!

My scalp is SORE for DAYYYS after the stupid blowout... i have to massage my scalp everynight for a like a week after b/c it just HURTS.. that's why I only do it when necessary, and even then, I try to avoid it as much as I can... the heat is too unbearable.

Hair Peace,

Sorry to hear that you went through that ordeal...I remember the first time I got a blow out, I went to the Dominican Hair Salon in the South Bronx and observed an atrocity. A little girl no older that 1 1/2 was getting a quick blow out to straighten what I would classify 3/a or b hair. Yes, the child's mother was there and allowed it to happen (for what reason I do not know). That child yelled and screamed like no one's business (I figured it was b/c she couldn't verbalize how she felt).

WRONG! After I received my touch-up and rollerset, I surely can say I know what hell could possibly feel like (and that was when I could relate to that little girl). It was horrible, the only thing was I had to be the strong adult and not cry. Now that I think about it she went overboard on hair that had been chemically straightened and my hair probably didn't need all that abuse (but that was a different time and thank God, I know better now).

You'll be fine, though.

Hope you come over this hurdle soon

Thanks ladies. You really made feel better about the whole situation (that and a good nap) ! I tried to keep the "no pain, no gain" mantra in mind while she was doing the blowout... heck, I was telling myself "don't cry" in Spanish! But it was just too much!

I swear! I don't remember it being that hot when I used to get them done in New York. I was planning on treating myself to one when I go in a couple of weeks. But now I'm too scurred!

I had one and although I didn't cry, it was hot....my scalp wasn't harmed though. I am not sure why. I said I would get one only at like 3 months post or something but that was before I realized that I would be better off air drying in rollers and then flat ironing the roots. Its less heat and I can use the $20 on something else....like more products.
I think they buy professional blow dryers but they also put it close to the scalp. I think its that combination that does it.

Boo the the 1 1/2 year old child getting one. Let the child be curly and happy.
I wonder if DCF can be called on such a thing.....if not the common sense police.

i am sorry you had a bad experience.:( i just had my first blowout on yesterday and that dryer is hot, but she moved it around alot and made sure it didn't burn my scalp too bad, and it wasn't too bad at all. those dryers have to come directly from HELL!

Unh-unh! No 'Dominican Burnouts' for me! After the stories I've heard and continue to hear about the heat, I am NOT going there no matter how GORGEOUS it can make me. As an alternative, I decided to buy & try the maxiglide from 'Bed, Bath & Beyond' yesterday...I am in love! I am 7 weeks post relaxer, now I'm positive that I can stretch my relaxer at least 4 months...if I ever get it again!

Good Luck!

Girl I notice location says Detroit, was this at Harletts?

I must have thick skin because when my dominican stylist did my hair, I didn't feel any discomfort. She laughed at me because before she started, I said a quick prayer  But I am sooo sorry that you had a rough experience with the blowout, OUCH!

I literally cried the first time I got a blowout. I was so embarrassed but that blowdryer felt like a torch on my scalp. Now when I go, they only blowdry me on medium and they use a paddle brush.

I was getting ready to suggest this. As a Christmas gift, a very kind person gave me a Maxiglide for Christmas. I got it today, tried it and it worked miraculously. I have another steam iron but this one does not compare to the Maxiglide (though they are made very similiar- it works well it just should have had a heat adjustment). And mind you when I say worked miraculously, I mean it. I tried the Maxiglide on a little girl's hair (she is Nigerian-American (so all of you Naija women can relate because I have read your posts) she has some serious, no joke, 4 a all the way to z hair with major shrinkage. We are talking about 4 inches of hair that after you wash it looks like about and inch!) I tried a section of her hair and it looked as if I had relaxed it or pressed it! No snagging or hair breakage and she did not cry. It was really major! I would not go through all of the Dominican blowout stuff because the Maxiglide nips all that in the bud! I am telling my cousin about it who goes to a Dominican salon frequently in NJ. I too will be stretching using the Maxi glide and other styles but the Maxiglide will definitely be a staple. Hands down and no turning back!

I'm sorry to hear that. The same thing happened to me when I got a blowout last year on vacation. I couldn't take the heat --- it was HOT!! Sadly, I walked out of that shop and my hair poofed up because the stylist used Salerm 21 after the blowout and it made the very few inches of natural hair I had revert. Also, she charged me an extra $5 because I didn't have a relaxer . I sat through all that torture for nothing!!

Dang! All of us with tears in our eyes and burned scalps... you think we would have warned each other by now!

I just might have to go the Maxiglide route! I get a coupon for Bed Bath and Beyond almost every other day! I've got about 3 of them on my desk right now! It just seems so big to me in the infomercial. My FHI flatiron is only an inch wide. Isn't the maxiglide like 2 inches?

And yes, Naijaqueen, this was at Harlets. I think I remember reading in the salon review board that someone was looking for another hair salon other than Harlets. I wonder if they ever found it? Don't make me call the Hispanic Business Association again!

My 8 yr old gets dominican blow-outs and she doesn't complain, I just asked her was her scalp sore and she said, "No," so maybe it's the stylist.

I went to a dominican salon once and the blowdryer was just too hot for me. It left a blister on my neck so I said never again. Instead I bought a Maxiglide on the days I wanted to wear my hair straight and I am very happy with that.

Wow...I truly understand how you feel...The heat can be really intense...but the current lady who does my hair at the dominican salon in my area, often moves the blow dryer on and off of my hair and scalp...so for me it's tolerable...try looking around for another shop...you shouldn't be experiencing heat that bad. Good luck and don't give up just yet.

I'm sorry to hear about you getting burned like that. :( I think I have a few sore spots on my scalp. So far I haven't detected any blisters though.

I'm going to have to keep the maxiglide in mind when I come out of the kinky twists in March/April. I'll really need it for those two weeks in between taking out the twists and getting a touch up (following the crown & glory method).

I agree with this. I think it's the stylist as well. My scalp is somewhat sensitive, but I never suffered scalp burns or anything like that.

THIS IS NOT SUPPOSE TO HAVE HAPPENED AND YOU SHOULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING!!! She could have damaged your hair severely!

My stylist DOES NOT use excessive heat on my roots...especially the roots! She first uses a heat protectant and then proceeds to blow out the roots on cool or medium heat. She then places more heat protectant on my hair and ends and uses more heat to straighten the rest of my hair. In cases where the cool heat does not smooth my roots, she blows the roots quickly without touching my scalp. She would blow the hair with upward strokes and never glids the hot dryer from root to ends in a downward motion. She goes section by section and takes her time.

I'm sorry this happened to you and I want you to know that this is NOT common for most blow outs. I hope you can consider trying it again and maybe ladies on this board that live in your area can recommend a stylist who knows what she's doing when blowing out clients.

HTH!!

I did say something! I told her it was too hot! But when it seems like the only 2 settings are "fire" and "hell" you really can't tell the difference.:perplexed

I noticed your location says NYC. Any salon recommendations for my trip to NYC next week?

I am cracking up...that was too funny. :lachen: Um Hair Peace sorry to go O/T, but i swear your picture looks exactly like me...I had to really stare at it. maybe our eyebrows are shaped differently and my hair isn't layered so the front may be longer than yours...but other than that you look like me...I can't wait til my fiance comes home, i'm gonna show him your pic and tell him it's me and see if he knows it isn't. i don't think i have any digital pics saved of myself...i'll try to find one...
