I want my hair straight without direct heat!

How do I do it? Anyone have any suggestions? I notice that some areas of my new growth hair tends to straighten out somewhat on its own after a couple of days. My relaxed hair will straighten out relatively easily on its own. But how do I get all of it straight???

Would rollersetting be my only option? Would I still end up with puffy roots which would then defeat the whole purpose?

What can I do?

There was a thread on this recently and most ladies got good results from rollersetting, but on really big rollers. Do a search on Dominican Salons and check out the techniques they use.

My rollersets are miserable but my stylist can get 10 weeks of new growth straight w/ those bad boys...he also blows the roots but just a tiny bit...pure unrefined coconut oil also helps to "straighten" my new growth.

Coconut oil is a great suggestion. You'd be surprised how well it straightens your hair. I would also say to try this method. After conditioning with Kenra squeeze dry your hair. Do not let the towel touch your hair. Apply a serum from root to tip (this gives a lot of slip). Next apply the coconut oil and detangle. After detangling with a big comb, comb through with a regular comb and then brush with yoiur denman D3. Make two ponytails using satin scrunches and smooth the hair again with the comb. Now take one side of the hair hanging out of ponytail, hold it taut and bring it across the part towards the front of your hair to the other side and secure with a bobby pin. Repeat on the other side. When you're done, the length of your ponytails should crisscross each other. You can sit uder the dryer until fully dried or partially dried and then airdry. Your hair will be very straight using this method and no direct heat.

WOW army....thatx for that method...wish my hair was long enough to wrap across my head like that! Funny...I used the coconut oil before the serum....which way do you think works best?

Hey Lunalight, you can use this method also. I told Hairlove to do it that way becuase I know her hair is real long. You can make one ponytail and bring the excess hair forward stright down the middle toward you forehead and then secure. You can make your own variations. This is a quick way I came up with becuase I don't like rolersetting. It makes for a really straight airdry too.

I apply the serum before the oil. The serum gives the hair alot of slip and helps the oil to be distributed easier. hth

Oh, ArmyQT,

What kind of coconut oil? I do not own any other than Monoi Oil which I think "contains" coconut oil. I've seen coconut oil at Hi Health though.

Hairlove, I use one or two things in respect to coconut oil. I either use the pure unrefined coconut oil from Garden of Life. This can be found at vitaminshoppe. The other is Carolyn gray's Healthier hair in a bottle. It's a mixture of alot of great oils, but coconut oil is the first one listed. I find this does a great job too. I have Monoi oil, but I've never tried it using this method. My guess is that it could work. The method in itself is what helps to get the hair straight. The oil is an added bonus. Use the Monoi oil if that's all you have on hand. Please let me know this turns out for you.

Thanks, I'm going to try the monoi oil since I have some already. I can't wait to try this and let you know how it works!

Yeah, I need to try something new. Now that you mention it , ArmyQT, coconut oil DID help me to have a nicer texture with air dry method. Recently, I've been ending up with frizzy and hard hair following airdrying.

A roller set and wrap always gets my hair nice and straight (especially since my hair isn't relaxed bone straight).

Allandra,

Do you know how to rollerset your own hair? I just don't even think I want to try it. I did once and it was a nightmare!

Hairlove,

I have roller set my own hair several times. It doesn't take me as long as it used to, but it still takes a lot of time. Since you've never done a roller set before, maybe you could go to a salon to get one done so you can see the technique.

Hello Hairlove,
Recently, I tried roller setting my hair on big rollers (the big can size rollers from Sally's, and the grey next size down). My hair is texturized, and it's hard to get straight, and I'm about 7 months post relaxer. The rollers got my ends really straight---like I'd used a flat iron, and my new growth came out alright. Instead of rolling my hair under with the rollers, I rolled my hair going upwards, and the roots came out straighter. I also used various sized combs to comb each section before rolling it---I used a big detangling comb, and I also used a medium tooth size goody comb, to help straighten and smooth my hair out a little more. If you add a good amount of tension to the hair when rolling, it will come out straighter also---I'm still working on this.

The only downside was, I didn't leave the rollers in long enough, and if your hair is still damp at all, it will frizz back up, and mine did---I left the rollers in for 6 hours without heat. I think I could've used another 2-3 hours, or if you have a good working dryer, this process could be a lot quicker. It took me about an hour to roller set my hair. Oh! One more thing, the hair that I rolled around the can-size rollers, those sections got dry quicker, and the hair was straighter.

hairlove, I've heard that if you do a rollerset with those magnetic rollers with the snap covers that it is supposed to straigthen your roots. I haven't tried it but do a search on carefree's album. She is natural and that is what everyone suggested that she use for her rollersets because she had wavy roots.

Also, how about trying a wet wrap? Wash your hair then carefully wrap it while wet with a moisturizing wrap lotion.

I have a hard enough time trying to pull my hair into a ponytail after washing. Wrapping it around my head is never going to work. Rollersetting I just know I'd fail at but I am definitely going to try ArmyQTs idea and see how that works. I could consider the ponytail rollerset though.

i tried armyqt's idea and the back of my hair was very straight but my roots were so puffy (i'm almost 3 months into my relaxer). it was very soft and managable but the front was so puffy....i kinda resembled a lion...lol....it did work wonders for the outer layer tho. thanks armyqt!!

You're welcome Ms. Jennifer. I really wished it could've worked for you with the new growth also. Did you airdry or sit under the dryer. Also, do you use cocnut oil on the wet hair before putting the ponytails in. That step is really important. It still sounds like you were somewhat happy with the results. Glad it helped a little

hey armyqt......
no, i didnt use coconut oil...maybe that was the problem. i was thinking about it also and when i was pulling the ponytails across eachother i noticed a slackness in my barrettes. maybe they werent holding my hair tight enough to my head. but what i did was put my leave in and serum and then did the ponytails. i am trying it again tonight with the tighter barrettes and see....if it doesnt work well, then i will use coconut oil (have to buy some). i did like the results. the smoothness was amazing. oh and i did sit under the dryer for about 30 mins. thanks again!!!

tried the ponytail thingy again and it was perfect.....off da chain even. very straight and silky...definitely worth a try for those wanting to get straight hair without heat. i didnt even sit under the dryer this time.....give it a try and thanks again armyqt

I'm going to try this Armyqt. I usually wrap my previously air dry hair to get it straight. The way you do it will eliminate the exta step of waiting for my hair to air dry first. Thanks for sharing!
