Assumer, I remember the day you announced you were going natural. I that time you had one of the most beautiful relaxed and highlighted hair on this bord. I still go to your pictures for inspiration. I remember that nice style you would do with the Banana clips. Your hair was not damaged at all and was beautiful. You decided to go natural per choice. You inspired me and I went natural for about 1 year. (geez.. i could not take it anymore).

Anyway, Try to remember why year (s) ago you decided to go natural. If it does not apply anymore GIrl I want you back with thoses nice relaxed styles on that beautiful skin. Let us know whatever you do.

Hugs.

Just thought I'd add some input to DI's questions

1. If a natural wears straight hair ALL the time, meaning bi-weekly presses, etc, how does that really make her different from a relaxed head? So she doesn't use chemicals, ok...but she still looks like a relaxed head, and if she likes the look so much that she uses some ungodly amount of heat to get the same look that a relaxer could give her, what really is the difference? I've only had a blowout once and I vowed to never do that to my hair or my scalp again. I've never burned from a relaxer the way that fire-spitting blowdryer burned me. I had to apply aloe vera gel to heal my scalp after the blowout. Maybe the idea is that if one day she decided to no longer press, she'd be able to back to a curly style without transitioning or a big chop, but with consistent use of heat over time, we all know that some patches (or even the whole head) will permanently straighten and the texture is lost. Anyway, I'm just trying to understand the logic in that.

Because pressed hair (on balance looks) a lot healthier, thicker than relaxed hair IMHO. And while I'm not refuting the fact that heat is damaging, I've never got relaxed hair as long as pressed hair. Obviously if by being natural you inferred that I was trying to condemn having/wanting "cookie-cutter" straight hair, it would be illogical. But if that's not the point at all (being natural makes no statement against relaxing at all), then it could be a simple matter of aesthetics (sp) and personal preference. Since my relaxed hair reverted (though not as dramatically) I needed to flat iron my relaxed hair to get the look I wanted anyway, I figured what's the point of the relaxer step and the additional risk of burning. Like someone already mentioned, some people can take heat far better than chemicals (and vice versa). Never say never, but I have had my hair fall out up massive clumps after the initial application of relaxer (so this one time I know it wasn't about care at all) so it makes me really risk adverse. Maybe it makes no sense but I have been lucky enough to have stylists that have not burned me in the process of straightening my hair. Not that I pressed every other week any more but I totally understand the logic...

2. What is the point in being natural if you're wearing weaves and/or braids all the time? If the idea is to grow out relaxed hair and transition because you're "tired of relaxed hair" or you want to "embrace your natural hair" then why use wigs and weaves? I guess I can understand using them to get past a phase (i.e. TWA or neck to shoulder, etc) but I see naturals here who wear weaves all the time. I don't understand that.

I agree though I don't think it's just naturals that do this. I wear braids because I look really good in them (not to be vain) and I'm lazy. I love my natural hair but dang sometimes it is a pain to detangle and style. NoSometimes i need a break from it. And besides, it makes no sense (if you are living in braids and weaves) to pay twice when a relaxer is doing to weaken the hair and isn't going to be seen anyway.

But I agree that the choice to relax is a personal one. I don't think the caution is necessarily a put down to being relaxed in anyway. And I do think the same caution should be given when someone decides to go natural.

I might have found a happy meduim, a freind of a friend reccomended a place that specializes in texlaxers...that truly will care for my hair and she is 100% into hair health..my friend said that her hair is lush and baeutiful..and the lady gives you a consultation..and the best part is..its not expensive like the curve salon...i am gonna venture there this week..it is in the bronx, Its called Yahira's hair specialist...anyone know about it...?
