i love this thread - i workout like a maniac - 2 times per day now for a total of 2.5 hours per day of excercise where i am sweating profusely - so i have to wet my hair to rinse daily. i cannot even think of straightemimg it because the sweat wopuld make it curl up...i want it alot longer so that when i let it airdry and wear it natural it does not shrink up to my ears....

the best thing would be to conditioner wash after every workout with a cholesterol conditioner, shampoo every 5-7 days and clarify every 3-5 weeks!

i think it can be a blessing because your hair will not only grow faster from constant washing, but it wil be soft and kept away. i would keep my hair ina wet bun and go about my business. thinking about it, i wanna join a gym!

good topic. i workout out 2-3 days in a row then wash my hair on the 3rd day. have it clean for 3 days then workout again. i definitely don't have a crisp/fresh looking hairstyle everday. it's a small sacrifice to having a healthy heart and good circulation.
during my workout i wear it in a high ponytail pinned under with a silver clip (roller clip). the next day to work i'll wear in a high ponytail pinned under or hair rolled around the ponytail (like sarah jessica parker's updo). it's cute. not the best but it saves time and prevents me from having to comb it everyday.

on wash days. i wash it and let it air dry in a ponytail. it comes out semi wavvy and i wear it in a wavy ponytail. works for me

Girls I feel you. I workout almost daily. I wear a full head weave with some hair left out. The small amount I leave out, I have to deal with every day. I have to wash this hair and condition more frequently, I cannot think about not washing my whole head after 3 to 4 days. Of course the weave is easy post wash and conditioning( I use disgustinly expensive hair -for the price I pay for it -it should wash itself.) but my hair after quick conditioning i use my caruso rollers or if time allows my regular rollers and blow dry to the roots. I try to stay away from super striaght styles, so if need be I can let my hair lay down with a little bit of surge Moisterizer creme. Thats been a life saver. I am very worried once I take out my weave for good. I hope bunning will work.

I have said before, that hair care has to be one big reason why black women never go to the gym.

I find myself having to completely disregard hair care regimen of those who never go to the gym. Hair care is JUST-NOT-THE SAME! Ex. The salt and dryness your hair has from dryness. This is just one more thing to consider for those who exercise.

I believe it is necessary for women who do workout consistently to purposely share how we are preserving and caring for our hair. Ex. What does one do to keep hair from converting from intense cardio workouts?

Not just complaining, it is my goal to be part of the solution. I will start intensely digging for ways to preserve and maintain black hair while at the gym. It is a merely suggestion that some others would do the same. We cannot keep sacrificing of bodies for our hair. Not all of us, some of do.

Preach!!

When you get it all figured out, drop a sistah a note:sekret:

I have to co-sign w/th Candi_C!

I'm training twice a day most days and it's very difficult to keep the hair 'cute' when you're sweating and carrying on.

Typically, my hair is stlyed in a wet bun or cornrowed under a quick weave. I try to at the very least rinse my hair daily, usually I'll CO-Wash. Some mornings when I come in from the gym, I'll apply a moisturizing conditioner to dry hair, cover with a steaming towel for a short bit before I hop in the shower. I am shampooing once a week and deep condition weekly.

I've found that rinsing off the perspiration regularly saves my hair from being crispy and dull. When I'm preparing to bun my hair, I comb in the shower, apply my leave in conditioner and seal with Amla Oil. I cover my hair with a satin scarf very tightly to smooth the edges without having to do much brushing. When I bun, I braid the length of the pony tail, apply a little more Amla Oil to the braid and twist up in a loose scruncy. Doing this has been saving my nape from breaking off too, I don't make the bun tight nor do I brush this area.

OT - Sorry to hijack this thread, but VWVixen, is that you in your signature photo? Girl your body is FIEERCE! Absolutely awesome - I'm looking to lose 20lbs and firm up all over and your picture is the kick-start I need.

Work it!

Back to the topic now

What about transitioning ladies who live on protective styles so as not to deal with the two textures?
I hear comb through, ponytails, CW's and I immediately want to just sit at home.
Its hard to detangle hair period, but add new growth and thin ends and thats another story.

I personally cant put my hair in ponytail with my layers and my hair doesn't do wash and go.

Please help us ladies out as well.

Not to be discouraging: I went through this in 2004 and that's part of what made me go back to relaxing.

On a more positive note, I found that when I was transitioning I still did my co washes and kept it heavily moisturized (my staples were ORS Olive Oil, MTG and a spirtz similar to the one mentioned in the Recipe forum AC3Jazz's (or something like that). I kept my hair in flat twists and quick weaves. I finally grew frustrated w/the two textures and cut off the relaxed hair. It was easier in some regards. I lived those styles because my hair was too short to pony and too kinky to wash and go. I relaxed because 1) I didn't like my hair texture (I'm not a fro rocker) and 2) it was easier w/styling expecially being active.

There area a lot of style options for natural hair that you can try: bantu knots, flat twists, braids, braid/twist outs and more.

Don't let your hair keep you from working out!

Amen Sister Friend!!! I'm 8.5 months post, and washing my hair at this point is not fun... so co-washing after every work out would equal washing my hair 6 days a week = not happening!!!

I'm on the braid-out challenge right now though, and it seems to be working pretty well. I just basically braid my hair in cornrows let it dry for a night or a whole day, then take the braids out and wear it in some sort of pinned up style for the next 3 days.

So far I haven't had majour problems with not immediately rinsing my hair, and letting it go for 3-4 days. I oil/moisturize my ends every day and it seems to be keeping my hair moist.

I'm at approximately 10 weeks post and I've been working out 5-6 times a week, so I've gone from washing deep conditioning 2x a week, to Cowashing every day. On Sunday's I actually clarify and protein treatment/deep condition.

What I usually do after working out, is jump in the shower and slather it with conditioner and then rinse with cold water when I'm done. I was using Rusk Smoother as my detangler/leave-in but it wasn't moisturizing enough and it's too expensive to be using everyday. I've found that children's detanglers like PCJ, Soft & Pretty, or Kid's Organics work much better. They detangle better between two textures and they moisturize well too. Plus they're cheap. At night I put my hair in a single braid and tie it down with a scarf. In the morning the edges and front are smooth and I can either tuck the braid under or put it into a bun. Using a foam bun foundation, helps make the bun look more elegant and done as opposed to something that I did sitting in my car.

As a transitioner I find it hard to see myself co-washing everyday because it will be TOO much manipulation.

I am willing to try something. I was thinking about rinsing one day with plain water and then co-washing the next day. Still sounds like I am jsut asking for more hair breakage then I need though.

For the ladies that wear twist...how do you rinse and co-wash without the twist coming out or looking extra frizzy. Especially the relaxed ends of your transitioning head?????

I don't complain. I exercise daily and co-wash daily. If people don't like my wet bun they can give me money to get it done professionally.

I honestly don't care about sweat, bacteria, whatever. In fact, I exercise just to have an excuse to wash my hair.

I HATE when black women don't want to exercise because of their hair. That is sick-- no wonder so many of us are overweight.

I was at a resort about a month ago with my "adopted" hispanic family. Can you believe they thought black women don't swim because "their hair will get messed up and turn into an afro." They even told me after I got out of the pool, "Look, your hair is puffing up!" Who the heck cares!

We saw four black couples who were together, and one black woman refused to get in the water because her weave would have got wet. Why are you sacrificing fun, enjoyment, and pleasure at a resort just because you have two-toned weave?

We really need to teach women that water is our hair's best friend. You are not going to melt if you get water on your hair. Once they learn that, maybe they'll start exercising. What's the point of having perfect hair if you weigh three hundred lbs and have diabetes?

sorry that was a random rambling.

Anky I agree with ever part of your post. I hate going away with friends that never want to go swimming or get too wet at the beach. I make sure that if I go away I have as much fun as possible and worry about my hair later.

Working out is a different story (an almost everday thing not a weekend getaway). When I was relaxed it was no problem wetting my hair everyday. When I am natural it may not be a problem wetting my hair everyday. But the in between stages..........dun dun dun. It is h*ll.
I could see this being one of the reasons that many people would just do the BC. ARRRRRRR decisions decisions.

This is so true. I repeat this to myself all the time when I don't feel like working out. I can spend hours doing or researching something about my hair. I can give my body an hour a day at the least.

ETA: That also put a huge dent into my PJ tendencies and experimentation. I don't need as many products to do COwashes and buns/braids, so I only buy necessities.

I am natural so I just wet and co-wash daily, rinse out the sweat, pull it in a curly ponytail or wear it out. My hair likes to be free so after 1 day of a ponytail my head is screaming - let me loose! So I wear it out the rest of the time. It draws up but it's ok.

I work out four times a week and get soaked with sweat. I just co wash afterwards usually, but I use shampoo about twice a week anyway. I don't follow a complicated regimen, I just wash, conditon, apply leave in and seal with avocado butter.

My normal style is a braided bun or a french twist. My hair is up and out of the way 90% of the time.

What a good thread! And you're right, there are some issues that we have because of working out that can't be answered with the pat refrain, "wrap your hair and wear a scarf"! I support this idea...

vwvixen... You better get it goin'! Gimme those doggone pecs!!!

Hi Camelia,
one thing you have going for you is length/weight of hair so even though you are curly it doesnt draw up to your ears and have you looking like orphan annie when u wear it down or in a braid...do you let it dry first or just put it wet in a braid? i find that when i put my hair in a bun and dont air dry at least 50% first it never dries, and a constantly wet scalp begins to smell funny:lol: ....i am looking forward to the day to get my hair your length. what would be the biggest tips you would give to grow hair to your length?

Hi Amorette, :)

I almost always braid my hair and put it up wet. Sometimes I let it dry in two braids down my back, it dries faster that way.

I've found through trial and error that simple really is better (for me, anyway). I have some good staple products that I use and I keep my hair up all the time. I love Nexxus and Aveda. Redken is good too. I'm not searching for hair products now, at least for a while!;)

My hair does shrink up when I aridry but that's okay with me. I just have to detangle really well before I braid or bun to avoid hellish tangles later.

YAY Naturals! I seriously just throw my hair into a puff but the best style is having twists. My head doesn't sweat as much because the air can get to my scalp and I can just rinse the twists afterwards.

For those whose hair doesnt go into a ponytail, what would you all suggest? Im also with CurleeDST; my hair cabt be pulled back for more than a day...even with a loose head scarf.

I can see a 3 day a week workout routine in my future. Every day is too much.

I workout 3 times a week and cowash after each one. I either do a rollerset or wet bun afterwards. I detangle in the shower while washing out the conditioner. I am currently 15 weeks post and I've gotten accustomed to washing after each workout it comes as nothing now.

I want long healthy hair but I also want a healthy body also. I'm nearing 30 so gotta keep my figure :lachen: :lachen: :lachen:

I go swimming, to water parks. I'm not scared of water. Plus I'm an island girl I got the beach in my backyard growing up so I've never let that get in the way of my hair. Since joining this forum a few months ago I've learned about cowashes and learned how to better take care of my hair but my lifestyle ahsn't changed. Gotta get my workout on and getting myhair wet ain't nothing but a thing

Don't be scared water is our friend ladies. I just slap on a bit of conditioner beofre going to the gym or pool and my hair is fine.

First...Vixxen when I grow up I wanna body just like yours!!

Second...I have been going through the same issues with working out and my hair. The biggest thing is what kind of styles are you guys rocking when you are finished working out. I would like something that looks cute and stylish. All I get is comments about my old lady bun.

Any suggestions on how to spice it up!

This is an EXCELLENT thread. This is why I posted the "thinking about relaxing" thread. Working out 6 days per week and trying to deal with hair is tough. I wouldnt give up my workouts for anything, so I'm trying to figure out what to do. I like to wear my hair straight, so it's hard to wash everyday because then I would have to press each day. I wear braids a lot, but I'm getting tired of that! My hair seems soo dry when I wear twistouts. ---Still trying to figure it out!

Vixen, you look great mami
Ive recently gone back to working out 3x per week. I usually dont sweat that much but my scalp does get kinda irritated.

I ll prob start washing every 3 to 4 days, slather my keracare oil moisturizer on my wet hair, air dry and flat twist it to dry over night. The next morning, ill put it up in a french twist or curly bun.

I work out about 4-5 times a week and I wash with shampoo twice a week and may rinse in between to get rid of sweat and grime.
Being natural helps of course, I don't strive for straight hair or a "do", I just let my hair do its thing.

Like a lot of the other ladies, I work out 5 times a week, conditioner wash after each workout, and wear my hair in a bun. I shampoo and deep condition once a week. I take two days off from working out a week so those are the days I may choose to wear my hair straight. My hair has grown to brastrap length using this regimen so water must be my hair's friend. (I heard otherwise when I first started doing this. Now they don't say nuthin.)
