Indulge me and please share your own experiences. . Why I wish I went natural SOONER.
I BC'd December 19, 2011. Everyone at my office (a law firm) told me they loved my hair. I was nervous at first as they had always known me for shoulder length bouncy curls. Now, I have 1/2" to 1" twa. For the first two weeks I wore it out with curling custard or curling souflee to accentuate the kink (for me a tight spiral). Currently I wear it in a slick look, with a part on the right (using knot today, coconut oil, and clear ecostyler gel) as a protective, non manipulation style (a la Billie Dee). It's not perfect, but I knew I would have to put vanity aside for this journey until I reach my goal (a la kimmaytube and others).
Why I should've gone natural sooner:
1. I thought I knew my hair--WRONG: When I was relaxed I thought my hair was a zig zag, liks zzzzzz. Since cutting the relaxer off, my hair is a tight spiral. The relaxed ends prevented my hair from curling into a circle.
2. Relaxers were giving me bald spots and I had no idea: when I was relaxed, I thought my hair was thin in spots thinking that I had fine hair. Now that I am natural I see that every relaxer burn was killing my follicles. Now I have five, yes 5 small spots of no hair or thin hair. I'm hoping with time my hair will spring anew.
3. Natural Hair is easier to gage: I always know when my natural hair is dry. It shows it, it feels it. When I was relaxed because I used serums, my hair always looked shiny. I was never sure if I needed more moisture.
4.Natural Hair Loves Water: My hair springs up and perks up for water based products, water, conditioner, water & coconut oil and aloe vera gel. I can wet it everyday (good for the gym) and it just looks better, kinky-curlier, happier, springy and shiny!
5. I stretched for 1 year 2010 and then relaxed! i should've cut then!! oh well no regrets
I am happy to be starting 2012 with the hair God Blessed me with! Can't wait to see what December 2012 brings.
