I PAID $55 FOR THESE CORNROWS

I am sorry this happened to you. I agree with the other ladies that it isn't so horrible that you should take them out. I say try to get as much wear out of them as you can. You can always unbraid the back or wear a half wig over the back to remix it a bit.

looks like underhand braiding to me

This is definitely overhand braid. You can tell because the braids are 3D and sit on top of the scalp. Underhanded braids will look like french braids do.

I wish I could find a good braider:wallbash:
I was really hoping this one would work out:nono:

Where I live it is very difficult. She was actually the cheapest I found. Everyone starts at $60 without extra hair and about $80 with extra hair:ohwell:

Anyway..I guess the search continues.

She didn't have a braid book so that you could see her previous work? If I am going to a new braider, especially a professional, I usually expect them to have some pics of their work.

To be honest it looked like she was being lazy. I would have had to have a discussion about it with her before I left her shop. She would have been giving me a discount or re-doing some of those braids. I can't believe that it took her two hours. It has never taken me that long to do braids with extensions all cornrowed back. :nono:

See where I live I can't find someone like that. Not trying to be stereotypical or anything, but I live in a predominantly white neighborhood in Edmonton Canada and braiding is not popular at all around these parts, hence the ridiculous prices around the city:ohwell:

Do you have Craigslist in your area? Maybe you can find someone that way...

You live and you learn babe. It definitely could have been worse.

Patient1 is the queen of doing hair! :notworthy

Uhmm, some enlightenment needed here Patient1: Considering I ignore fashion like it's a foreign language, what is old-fashioned way of starting a cornrow? :giggle: Can you do two cornrows one old-fashioned and one modern so I can see? I'd hate to volunteer to do someone's hair and do it the unsophisticated way. :look:

Mandy, $50 was daylight robbery. But at least you can rest your hair. (And to think I used to do braid extension singles like I wear for $60. We're talking microbraids! :wallbash: No wonder I quit. :lachen: )

Please, hun! You are the braiding queen!! Not just candycoating ya! I have yet to even attempt your method of adding hair. :spinning:

I said "odd" not old. It looks like she was picking up individual spaced pieces of hair and adding them to the cornbraid instead of one long flowing braid. Does that make sense? I feel like I'm seeing little sections of hair being pulled into the braid. This might account for why it has that 'underhand' look at the beginning of a few and why they veer off and leave her parts skewed.

Ya'll are right about prices being regional. That's something to consider. There's a H.S. student in my parts who's work is just wow: fast, impeccably parted, low tension, etc.

Catch was that her daddy had gotten faded and wind up passing out in front of everyone in the living room. Bumped his head and the paramedics had to be called. Homegirl kept braiding the whole time while hollering for her Daddy to get up!

So I guess sometimes it's worth the extra loot to be in a shop.

ITA! Your puff is sooooo cute!!!

The cornrows look nice, but the price is way to much. My sis-n-law would have done the same thing for $10 or $15 depending your length. Nowadays you don't have to go to the salon for this look.

^^^LOL@ the faded dad. That's why I can't get my hair done at anyone's house. I live in the south where there are plenty of black folks, but everyone braids out of their house. I have to go to one of the bigger cities to find a shop and even then you may still end up SOL.

Mandy, you may have to learn how to braid on your own since the pickings are slim in your neck of the woods. But I agree with everyone else that they are wearable. If you really don't like it, you can always wear a wig over them.

Oh ma bad, P1. Reading skills are essential, I see. :giggle: Old--odd...and I'm not dyslexic so I have no excuse. :look:

P1, my braiding skills stop at extension braids. I can cornrow but it would be a crime if I dared try my clumsy skills of cornrowing on another human being. You can do so much more than a lot of people I know, so hats off to you, m'dear!

Girl, I was like, What was I running my mouth about? Was I awake when I posted? I didn't drink last night...I had to go back and reread! LOL!!!

Thanks for the compliment. It means a lot coming from you. :)

I bought a Mannequin head and a braiding DVD, I need to make use of them. Problem is I have a bad shoulder, but I can see how it would work once I have learned how to braid.
Sometimes I really do feel like I am SOL:nono:

Gosh I miss Africa...I would have people lining up to do my hair if I was back in Zambia...For next to nothing to. No extension Cornrows would be free for sure.

I think they look nice. And in my area for a shop, that is a fair price. Actually it's a little cheaper than here. I paid $80 a few years ago for cornrows but I got an extra row in the back. It ordinarily would have been $60 unless I got the hookup from somebody at home. And that was like 4 or 5 years ago so I'm sure the prices have gone up since then.

ETA: Wait, OP this is just your hair? No extensions? Then yeah that is a bit pricey. I paid 40 a few weeks ago at a natural hair salon and it including a wash and blowdry before braiding. I think I paid $30 the time before that but I washed at home.

that is a great idea. girl get your practice on and you will be the braiding queen. i know i need a mannequin so bad. i want one with texture though instead of the straight hair and those run about $40 around here.

I've never been to a shop for braids but I've had them done in a young ladies house for $20 or less and she did a great job - just frequent stops. A more professional atmosphere is not worth me spending $30 more though, because I only keep them in one week. They start to itch and at the first sign of frizz out they go. How long are you keeping yours in?

Honestly, like someone else said, a teenager could probably do a better job for much less. :yep:

I have a textured hair one, but it really does not come close to the texture of real textured hair.

This place was not even a salon, it was in a nasty basement:ohwell:
Anyway...I think I will have to try a few of these kinds before I find something that works.

Thanks Ladies.

I have to agree with most of the posters here....I think the price is "steep" although it looks cute BUT I'm concerned about your hairline..which is why I will NEVER allow anyone to braid my hair.

Please make sure you take care of and be very, very careful when you take your braids out so you don't get breakage around your hairline. I hate it when they pull so hard that they actually pull your hair out. Just my opinion!!

I am just happy that you finally got your cornrows, I know you have been searching for a while. Don't feel bad about the price, to me $55 is a small price for a little peace of mind and a break from doing your hair. I hope the braids around your hairline aren't too tight though, they look hekka tight. You'll find someone eventually that you really like and if you can afford the price and find someone who is good thank God you found them and that he has blessed you with the funds to pay the price.

Theyre not bad! But avoid her in the future. If you dont want to try learning how to do it yourself ,ask a little cousin or your friends little brother ,sister, or simply a high scholler that rocks cornrows. I will not pay more than 10$ for cornrows call me cheap but thats just me.

I think you paid too much. For the result but I do not think you should take them out. Keep them for a couple weeks. (shoot, wear a wig over them if you want)

I don't think her work was very good but its not horrible either.

LADIES...I live in South Jersey, Near Philadelphia, Anyone who lives in this area, I'll be more than happy to braid your hair and I won't over charge you!

The cornrows are actually not tight at all, so my hair line is not too pulled back which is good, coz that's what causes breakage mostly right?

Thanks hopeful...you know my story, I am glad that I can take a mini break from my hair.

Thanks Mook, love your braids.

I think that is an average price for braids, but it doesn't look like it was done by an experienced braider. I would probably take them out :ohwell: By the way, I love your puff Mandy!

Must be a DMV thing, but yeah 55 is CHEAP! I wish. 60 is about the cheapest for conrows around here (I live in D.C.), and it just goes up from there. But, I'm always very happy and I usually pay around 60.

I wish I could find a good braider:wallbash:

I'm very sorry that you're unhappy with your hair. I would suggest maybe looking into the more expensive braiders next time, if you can. In my experience with hair braiding (and I've got years worth) you really do get what you pay for. I'm never to happy paying $60+ to get my braids done, but they always look really nice and I get complements wherever I go, and this somehow eases the pain of the the money that I had to fork over. Hope it works out better next time!:yep:

UPDATE: I found a braider who is willing to do it for $40, she was recommended by my Aunt (Why did I not think of asking my Aunt before I started searching:wallbash:)
Maybe I will try her after I take these cornrows out, depends on what my pocket looks like.

I am a bit disappointed because I don't think they look worthy of $55, but I guess I can take a much needed break from my hair now:

Next time $30 should be your limit unless they promise some flyyy *** braids! To think I was doing it for free for all of my ex-husband's friends when they stopped by on a whim and I could have been charging them all crazy. It is nice, but do not let anyone else take advantage of you like that!...:nono:

:yay: I think $40 is reasonable, especially if she's good.

Thanks Ladies!!!
I think $40 sounds way better, in Canada this is a good price, even $55 is a good price, just not for what I got.

Congratulations! :yep: I know how big of a relief that must be. It's hard to live in a place with limited braiding options. :nono:

Same here. A few years ago I had a teen do my hair and she really did a great job. Her mom also braided hair and taught her. She charged me $20 for cornrows with extensions that looked so good. I gave her $25-$30 though, because she was that good. She charged me $70 for individuals and boy was she fast and the braids looked really good. Too bad she moved to Northern California, because she would probably still be braiding me up to this day. :yep:

I wouldn't say it's the best braid job in the world, but it's not horrible...very wearable. To me I think it's worth $55 because if you take care of them and tie them down each night, you'll get 2 weeks easily, and an extra one if you don't mind not looking "fresh". The time that you save doing your hair and the benefit your hair will get by you not doing it all the time is well worth $55.
