In hair purgatory
Ok my mom is pissed off. she is really mad at me and just earlier she went near crazy. It seems I've pushed her to the point of no return about hair products. I know if i ask she will not get me any more hair products. i run through conditioners frequently and she is starting to think im being ungrateful among other things such as asking for so much money and getting a new bottle every week and other stuff i cant mention. these last few days have been awful and while i was just trying to get a jar of brillantina she popped.

im not old enough to get a job, car,or visa card so i have to ask my mom for everything. i usually try to space it out when i ask her for things but since ive been natural, i keep running though products and dont get me started on those expensive braids that lasted a week that i took of from having a reaction to them. she was really pissed about that.(gee i really am ungrateful:sad:) My brother agrees with her and he advised me to just stop and get my hair relaxed so i can stop bothering them. he also said dont ask her for anything hair related for a while which is difficult because im channeling buckwheat in my hair right now.(not a good look) Right now i just dont know what i should do. :pullhair: she did give me allowance money before she popped though. i must spend it wisely...

AWWWW I'm sorry to hear that!

Are you old enough to get a part time job? That would help so that you wont have to ask Mom for any $$ for hair and other lil things. Maybe ask for extra chores so she will give you extra money and explain to her why you want the money. At least she'll know what its for and then she may be more understanding.

your profile says your 17. I think there are jobs available out there for you. They might not be the best but they will definitely cover your hair products. Look into that. Since you use a lot of products and you dont pay for them you have to understand why she would get upset. I would too but when its you own money you do what you want. Since you use alot of products I suggest using your allowance wisely and buy in bulk. Larger bottles should do the trick. Make sure its products that you know work well already . You cant afford to buy one and it doesnt work at the moment. And just double check how your using the conditioners. Maybe you are using too much.. Maybe not I dunno . Just look into it okay? HTH

What conditioners are you currently using? If you feel like your hair needs a lot, then you can get the cheaper brands, Suave for instance. My daughter and I go through a lot of conditioner, but I buy the really cheap ones.

i have to wait:ohwell: until im 18 to get a job for reasons that i dont want to get into. ive tried smaller coin sized amounts. that just dosent fly with my hair:nono:

girl i dont mean coin size... i dont even use that small amount and im relaxed.. but like maybe parting and sectioning your hair and apply conditioner that way. i find if you do it in section you waste less. thats jsut my opinion and its more evenly distributed

Well when I was your age, I use to babysit for relatives maybe you can do that and get some extra :cash:

i would but all my relatives live in florida:ohwell: I think i need to do some super cash streching. i guess this will help me control my PJisim too.

Here are a few ideas for income:
  • What type of student are you? Could you tutor?
  • Are there any elderly that live near you? Could you do yard work, cleaning or assistance with grocery shopping?
  • Any relatives or neighbors with children? Could you watch the kiddies for them during their "Date Nights"?
Girl, be creative...from your avatar your hair looks great and you sound as if you've got the basics down on care, what products to buy and styles...start talking into some of the girls ears at school and see if you can start hooking them up - 'for a small fee'

However, even if you're able to make some extra money on a regular basis, you'll want to create yourself a small budget. "How much can I spend on my hair each week" and don't go over that amount. You can make your money go further by purchasing big bottles of the cheaper, but quality, conditioners like:
  • Suave Bio Basics. It's a Biolage knock off.
  • Suave Humectant. That's the Nexxus knock off
  • Tressemme Anti Breakage formula
Each range any where from $3 - $4 and if you add a teaspoon of Olive oil/ Coconut Oil (make sure to buy generic Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Coconut Oil to save even more) that will add extra moisture to an already good conditioner. I know they probably were not designed to be deep conditioners, but to get back on your moms good side, just add the oils and heat and work with it for a minute.

I'm sure you have hair accessories already so you can hold off on those for a while. If you give your mom a break for a month, or so, showing her you've been responsible with your money, product management and you've created a budget and stuck to it - she'll open the wallet again for some of the special hair items. :yep:

Try explaining to her your routine. Maybe if you let her in on what you do to take care of your hair, she will understand...Get her to see that you're not being wasteful.

I had a similar problem when I was younger, but I just let my mom in on what I do to take care of my hair...next thing I know, she was shopping with me:lachen:

Some one has already suggested that you try using cheapie condiitioners - which is a great start. There are four heads that require conditioner in my house so I understand both sides of the story.

I would also suggest that with your cheapies you also use coupons. For example my nephew uses HE Hello Hydration. I used a coupon this weekend for $2.00 so the bottle ended up costing $.59 cents.

I would really suggest that you evaluate what you use and how much and then hit the stores once a month so that it would seem that you are buying so much so often.

HTH

I know this might be asking for much. But I think LHCF should have a relief fund going :lachen:

Seriously, there's alot of PJs on the board who dont use many of the products they buy. (I've seen the Show Your stash thread!!!:lachen:) Perhaps ladies can chip in and send to those in desperate need? It might be asking a bit much. But there are ladies with open hearts who dont mind it at all.

Jus a lil suggestion.....

Heeeey I have that 2 off coupon too for HE products, lol. Gotta use that this week.

Girl you've just got to get creative and use the advice given you. Also, SHOP ON SALE! A lot of your favorite products may go on sale from time to time at places like CVS or Rite Aid. So always be on the look out, pick up a flyer from these places and buy what you can. Also look out for coupons in the paper, they almost always have some for hair products.

Also a good idea would be to even make a few posts on the products exchange board and see if anyone has any of the products you may need that they dont use anymore. I'm sure once you explain your situation you'll find SOMEONE if not MANY who can help you out and send stuff to you!:yep:

What about getting odd jobs around the neighborhood like babysitting, dog walking, doing yard work? I have some ideas I will pm you about.

Is there someone who can teach you how to cornrow your own hair?
That will help save you time & money.

Meanwhile maybe you can find a local girl who does cornrows but DON'T add any extra hair this time just get your own hair braided. It's long enough. That should last you until your Mom stops being mad.

Also as the other ladies suggested you need to find some cheap stuff that works really well.

Time to get down to basics for a while.
Vinegar
Castor Oil
Baking Soda
Pure glycerine
Water

Gas prices are too high - Mom can't take it.

Thanks everyone:grouphug:for the help and suggestions. I talked to my mom yesterday. shes not as mad as she was but its gonna take a good minute before she bothers with hair care again. she dosent care about her hair at all and she dosent bother because she thinks that her kind of hair cant grow.(we got the same kinda hair:ohwell:) anyway im gonna try some of your suggestions. Thanks

You are old enough to have a part-time side job. Use your talents. Here are a few more suggestions

Tutoring
Teachers assistant
Summer children's programs
Paper route
Babysitting
If you do bead work, you can make jewelry
Styling others' hair
Go to a salon and become the shampoo girl

You have to use your connections (the people around you).

Then after you get a job, always put some in your savings and leave a bit out to spend.

Only purchase during sales or buy cheap hair products. Also, use items from home like olive oil and other stuff.

Napp - If you try some home treats ( Caramel, Eggs, Baking Soda Poo, etc) Those might help you!!! They are cheap - and they are effective.

I am an avid label reader and will not buy any hair conditioner that does not have several hair friendly ingredient. For example, the other day, I bought five bottles of White Rain ocean mist conditioner, which had two kinds of sea algae, kelp, panthenol, vitamin E, wheat protein, chamomile, freesia extract, aloe vera, seaweed extract and it only costs $1.00 at the Dollar Store. It is a great conditioner -- strong, moisturized hair and the bottles are 20 ounces. Breck restorative at the dollar store has rosemary, horsetail, nettle, burdock, aloe vera, panthenol and several more great ingredients. A couple months ago, I bought seven bottles from Big Lots of VO5 juicy mango passion, which had like 10 hair friendly ingredients for 96 cents each. Also, things from the kitchen, like another poster suggested, baking soda, honey, molasses, eggs, gelatin, yogurt, mayo, milk (add cornstarch to thicken it), sweetened condensed milk, soy milk, buttermilk, olive oil, vegetable (soybean) oil.

I would suggest you just go the cheap route. it works and you can still do your hair alot. i remember being young and doing the cheap route.

suggestions are. .....
leave in condish- Olive oil --- your mom will think its only being used for cooking so she wont know u using it on your hair.
protien- mayo, or eggs switch it up--- again your moms wont know

now poo- get a large bottle of CON which is cheap and should last a long time with all that lather it has plus you shouldnt be washing your hair THAT often

condish- i prefer Vo5 moisture milks u can get them at some places in NYC for 1.00 also you can even use them as leave ins since they have no cones...
as far as styling products i would work with what u have for a while so really u shouldnt have a problem.... one more suggestion is if all else fails and u feel like your hair is looking wack buy ONE cute short wig and rock it... if taken care of properly it should last you a long time and in NYC you can get one for about 20.00 which i know is alot on allowance but really u shouldnt have to buy much else.
