Heres the problem:

Normally when Im at home I co wash and add products (mango butter and Pantene R&N setting lotion) shake my hair and let it airdry.....

BUT now Im at school in a dormatory with the hardest water ever. It feels like slime, I kid you not. I figured there was a problem when I saw breakage in the sink and my hair felt like a brillo pad

My scab hair felt like silk compared to this mess

I remedied the problem by doing my hair in two strand twists. I dont know how long this is going to last and quite frankly I hate it. I look about nine years old with this style.

So what other styles can I do with about six inches or so of hair? If it was my choice I would stick with the shake n goes. but at the rate of me co washing daily I'll be bald by the time I go back home.

Also what can I do for wash day since I have the hardest water in the entire universe? This is the week for my protein deep condtioning but Im scared to do it becasue of how the water makes my hair feel.

Any suggestions please!

Aw that sucks. Is there any way to screw on a shower filter real quick on wash day then take it down?

I have no Idea... Im thinking I may have to use my poland spring bottled water for now. Which means I may only be able to wash my hair every two weeks until Im able to go home in Dec.

make sure you use a GOOD moisturizing conditioner. also make sure to deep condition at LEAST every 2 weeks. it will help bring alot ofmoisture to your hair

How about using distilled water. That's a little cheaper than poland spring water.

Isn't there a hard water shampoo by Ion? Maybe you could try that?

Also, maybe you could leave your true conditioners in your hair daily to help them stay moisturized? My other post says that many people do this and it's ok. I'd think in your case, it might be necessary.

I wish I had more advice for you.

yeah I think it is necessary...I wont be wetting my hair or another few days or so. I wonder of the cholesterol would be too heavy? I need to figure out what to do becasue Im going to be here for nine months. If not Im getting braids for second semester.

I would look or the shampoo but i doubt if ill find it, everyone here is mainly caucasian so.....

I second the distilled water. When I first moved to Massachusetts, I lost SOOOOOOOOO MUCH HAIR from the very first wash. I thought it was stress/home sickness/diet....it wasn't until I read in Reader's Digest that hairloss could be cause by water it clicked

Distilled water from Walmart saved the rest of the hair I had left!

What I did was rinse my hair with the MA. water to get it wet then shampoo, then I rinsed the shampoo out with the distilled water. I would only lather once but if you are doing CO washes that should work for you too.

I agree. I've used distilled water in the past (w/great results), and I've read about other ladies using distilled water, but I haven't read of any using spring water. Give the distilled water a try.

I put in another vote for distilled water, that is the only thing that came to mind when I first read your post. It seems like your normal products are going to be pointess unless you change the type of water you're using.

There is also a shampoo and conditioner that I used to use when I was living on campus with hard water. It was called Malibu 2000, but even though I was natural back then, I wasn't really conscious of what I was putting on my hair. I'm not sure of its' ingredients. Check out the links below, hopefully their helpful.

Hard Water Info

Malibu 2000

Edited to add: There is SLS in shampoo, I'm not sure how you feel about that ingredient.

I think Hairlove is right about the Ion shampoo. If you have a Sally's near by you should be able to get it. If they dont make one for hard water or for mineral deposits do a search for another brand, I know I've seen them before.

i don't know anything about hard water, but have you considered making your twists smaller? i feel like a little kid too when my twists are too big...like i should put ribbons on the end or something.

Distilled water is a great idea, so is looking into getting a shower filter., they sell them at Home Depot. Mine cost 30 dollars canadian( in US dollars it would be less) and it's easy to put in, it should fit on any strandard size showerhead. The filter last for up to 6 months, then you have to get a replacement cartridge. HTH and good luck

Would it be easy for her to change the filter back and forth for the shower? Or should she just add one and leave it there for everyone to use?

In a dorm? I think she would be changing that filter a lot more often than 6 months. I think the distilled water is your best bet if the shower filter can't be easily exchanged.

yeah Im sticking to the distilled water
smile.gif
I would prolly have to change the filter every 3 months because there are 10 girls to three showers. So that idea is out of the question I havent wet my hair in three days..Im seeing if I can go a week. Thanks a lot guys!

swirl- thanks for the suggestion. I think I did make them too large. But the twist out looked fab!
