Re: I'm popular and need hair help. GET IN HERE!!!!!

I would try castor oil. I know many people love the Jamaican black castor oil but I use the Haitian one since it's free. :)

Re: I'm popular and need hair help. GET IN HERE!!!!!

OP, I have this problem with my nape. It's why my hair is not longer because I hate uneven hair and I keep cutting it to even out with my ever breaking nape. What I had to start doing was having the stylist stop perming that portion of my hair (when I was relaxed). Whenever I did my hair, I just flat ironed that portion and it eventually stopped breaking as much.

It doesn't seem a huge hunk of hair, so maybe a "nactural patch" would help you avoid the snaps.

You have to be Haitian to get it for free :look:

I want some :)

Re: I'm popular and need hair help. GET IN HERE!!!!!

My Grandmama had a similar problem and she was natural. For her it was how she slept. Maybe you can try a scarf in addition to a satin pillowcase if you have not done so already. It should help to reduce friction. Also, maybe a sleep friendly hair style that won't get pulled a lot if you toss and turn during the night. HTH

Re: I'm popular and need hair help. GET IN HERE!!!!!

LOL girl u too funny... But i'm mad that your hair is super thick and you are relaxed???? wow! My hair is shorter in the crown as well...this is because this is where my relaxer is 1st applied. i always put alot of oil/protein in my crown before i get my relaxer applied.

Re: I'm popular and need hair help. GET IN HERE!!!!!

I don't have any help to offer but I'm posting just because you're popular. :yep:

Re: I'm popular and need hair help. GET IN HERE!!!!!

It's probably mechanical breakage. It's the way you comb or detangle this area of the head based on your reach or left hand, right hand motions.

I know. I've battled this all my life. Until I finally understood what my hairstylist said it was and kept doing what I was doing and then one day I finally figured it out.

I am now very cautious and conscious of my patch when detangling, combing, roller setting, parting, etc. Using extra time; careful not to rush in that area.

Today, my "patch" has grown in and FINALLY caught up with the rest of my hair and no re-occurrences! :yep:

Not completely ruling out stress or over processing in your situation but when I changed the way I combed and handled my hair, did the chronic breakage in that area stop.

*lurks on the popular girls and daydreams that someday ill be like them...*

*sigh*

Re: I'm popular and need hair help. GET IN HERE!!!!!

Try to use the Crown & Glory method of combing afro-textured hair. Basically there are illustrations to show that we should comb the front of our hair forward, the crown up, and the back and sides down but out. Combing and brushing our hair "down" like Type 1 hair causes breakage to our hair.

Entering popular member's thread populated by popular members

Jcoily, you need to moisturize and seal that area more often. I part the crown in a circle and braid it and tuck the ends in at night. That area is my problem section as well beside breakage I pick it bald (due to OCD). I feel your pain polular member.

Re: I'm popular and need hair help. GET IN HERE!!!!!

Mine used to break of like that because it wasnt getting as much conditioner or moisture and was harder to detangle, causing it to break when I combed it. Washing in braids or sections might help you pay a little more attention to the area.

:hand: Girl you know you popular!

a flat iron one

:weird: Yay! Now when? :poke:

Back on topic, CP how do you secure your pony? Are you using rubber bands or something that could cause the breakage? When I wet bunned all last summer I would cowash, saturate my hair with conditioner, and then loosely wrap my bun and secured with 1 or 2 very large bobby pins. I tied a scarf around my roots to flatten them, and I did not comb until wash day.

Re: I'm popular and need hair help. GET IN HERE!!!!!

I have this same problem. For me, my hair is kinkier there and weaker. To put your hair in a pony you have to put a lot of tension on the area, and if it's already weak, it's going to break more. Maybe try a bun?

Re: I'm popular and need hair help. GET IN HERE!!!!!

*Rushes in* Could it be that the style you wear daily is putting stress on that area? Like a ponytail holder or clip or bobby pins or how you tie it down at night? Is that area on the outside of a ponytail, so that it gets brushed or combed the most often

*crosses fingers and wishes real hard that this makes me part of popular clique*[/quote]

Re: I'm popular and need hair help. GET IN HERE!!!!!

JC do u sleep with your ponytail?

Guilty! I usually sleep with it in a ponytail with a scarf to keep my edges flat.

I'm 10 weeks post in the OP pic.

I use ouchless bands soaked in coconut oil. I only comb my hair on wash days, but I do brush the perimeter of my head to catch any flyaways.

Re: I'm popular and need hair help. GET IN HERE!!!!!

Your hair is still very nice and thick though.

Just scalp massages in that area should help it. =).

Re: I'm popular and need hair help. GET IN HERE!!!!!

ETA: I've also been told by folks (regular folks not doctors) that it could be stress related.

That is a common affliction for the women in our family. That area of my head was a mess from the 3rd grade till I was in my twenties. My mom and sister also get it. Never did definitively figure it out but here''s how I see it. Stress was huge for us. If someone wasn't sick or injured, then someone was out of work. I got placed in the honors program in school in second grade and by third grade, I figured out that meant they expected perfection, and I freaked. In my twenties (yep still lived there) the house burned down and we all changed our out look on life since we all survived intact. The bad patch on all 3 of us grew.

Also consider health... vitamins or ailments. Hope it works out :sunshine:

Re: I'm popular and need hair help. GET IN HERE!!!!!

I have a patch like this too due to stress. I've been having problems with it off and on for the last 5-6 years. When I was relaxed I thought it was the relaxer. Now that I'm natural I still have the problem so it wasn't that. I've seen the worst of it within the last year or so. It went bald for a period of time. It's growing back in now but I truly believe it's from stress. I've just been trying to focus on giving it extra conditioning treatments. :ohwell:

Re: I'm popular and need hair help. GET IN HERE!!!!!

I started having that problem when I stopped relaxing. Sometimes I sleep with my hair in a ponytail, don't wear a scarf or bonnet at night, and comb too roughly. So in addition to changing those practices, I'm also applying conditioners and moisturizers much more heavily in the area. I don't know what else to do really.

This patch was one of the reasons why I decided to go natural. Then when I was natural, it still didn't act right.

Oh well, it'll work out.

Thanks everybody for responding. I'm going to try a little bit of everything suggested to see if it helps.

I had a patch like this too and would you believe it was caused by my hair clip? When I was relaxed I would pull my hair back and secure it with a flat clip which I lost one day. Then I noticed after time, without the clip, that area started growing back.

So it could be your styling accessories causing the breakage.

I am not popular but I don't care, Sistah girl need some help and suggestions and I can say I had the problem it is documented in my fotki.

I used castor oil and also I started doing Henna/Indigo and then tea rinses and now I cannot even find that area in my head.

Signed,
Not so popular and really don't care! :)

I'm still recovering from a thin broken off crown. I've been paying more attention to that area as far as making sure that area is covered completely with conditioner. My hair is growing out very well since and more healthier too!
