I just walked out of the salon with half done hair!

How odd that people can't find natural hair care stylists in NYC. Aren't y'all supposed to be the cultural everything Mecca?

I saw your recap on youtube. Glad you walked out.

NY is a lot of things, but culture is all but lost in this city. Fashion, yes. Food, yes. Homemade donut, YESSSSSS!!!! Hair products, yes. Hair did.... Hit or mostly miss!

Please excuse my iPhone; it's trying to get it together

I am sorry you went through that

After LHCF it is difficult for me to trust stylist
I have had many nightmare stories

NYC is nowhere near the cultural mecca for natural hair unless you want dreads or braids. You can't walk through most business areas in Brooklyn or Harlem without seeing a braid shop. You can also find weave shops all over town.

However, if you want a blow out on natural type 4 hair finding a good stylist is like finding a unicorn. My former stylist could whip some hair (when I was relaxed) but she couldn't properly blow out natural hair. My good friend with type 3b/3c hair who introduced us stopped using the stylist for anything beyond her bi-annual texturizer since her blow outs never came out well.

I can't even find an Ethiopian salon in NYC which I hear is sort of like a Dominican blow out salon. They are popular in DC but I have yet to find one in NYC.

naturalmanenyc I'm so glad you walked out with your hair still in tact! Your hair still looks good after you roller set it.

Have you tried a Dominican place for blow outs? Though personally, I have never wanted to try them because of all the heat they use. :ohwell:

OMG! I had the WORST experience at a Dominican salon. Those heifers had me so angry.

I walked in with straight hair to get a blow out and trim. I had used the salon many times in the past when relaxed and at the start of my transition to natural. Once my hair was washed and my curls shrunk up it was like I was Lucifer reincarnated. Not only did they talk crap about my hair being "bad" in Spanish (I understand and speak a little Spanish) but all the stylists acted like I my bad hair was contagious so nobody wanted to touch it to do my roller set. They acted like they didn't understand how I wanted my hair styled. One woman even told me "I don't speak English" and made the statement in perfect English.

It took all of 15 minutes for the shampoo girl to roller set my hair since nobody else in the shop would do it. They were all in awe when my hair was done and blown out. I haven't been back to that salon and I won't ever go to a Dominican salon for a blow out. That was the first time I really should have walked out of a salon with wet hair but it was late at night in Brooklyn and I had taken the bus.

I've only gone to one stylist after going natural but they only work on natural hair. I think that's the only way I can begin to trust any stylist now.

Your hair looks great naturalmanenyc thankfully you didn't suffer any damage or setbacks. I for one take a whole lotta notes from these kinds of threads, thanks for posting.

:lachen: at the bolded. You have got to be kidding me! That is absurd! smh Looks like if I ever straighten, I will just go on and do it myself.

I wish I were kidding. There was a LHCF member in the Dominican salon at the time which I found out when I posted about it here: http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?p=13194389#post13194389

It could have played out so differently if I acted a fool and ended up getting arrested at the Dominican salon over a roller set.

Ladies you can try beana, she is a LHCF member and a stylist, she is very good, she listens to your concerns and understands natural hair.

thanks for the review! your hair was the bomb.com before you went in. you obviously know what you are doing!

Did they attempt to do the blow out with that round brush? Can naturals even get that kind of brush through their hair? I'm a 4B and have never attempted to use a brush like that on my hair since I'm scared it would rip everything out.

I grew up in Dominican salons (I'm from D.R) and our stylists can be some of the worst when it comes to natural hair. The culture doesn't like curly hair period. Even if they can work with it, you better believe they are talking all kinds of ish about your head once you leave. I was relaxed and younger at the time, it didn't touch me the way it does now, but I remember my stylists laughing it up and commenting horribly about unpermed heads. I would never go to Dominicans ever again (dealing with my family is bad enough) and I honestly don't know why a natural would want to, good blowout or not.

Your experience there doesn't surprise me one bit sadly :nono:

Yes, she used a round brush. I can use a round brush but my hair must be fully detangled. I use a denman sometimes and others I just use my hands (tension method). A video is here: http://youtu.be/sSHjwIl9UvY

No Hair Rules is not for me. Been there, done that. Got the blow dryer burns and flat iron burns to prove it. The stylist tried to comb out my hair to section it from root to tip. I had to take the comb from her to show her how to comb my hair without hurting me. Not to mention the infomercial for their products while getting my hair done was a turn off. I was also not about to pay $85 for a trim on top of the $55 Express Blow Out price.

i think hairrules wouldve been a better option..they work wonders with our natural hair...

First let my say your bun is awesome!!!!

I admire people who will walk out when their hair isn't right! A lot of us (me including before I knew better) would've suffered through it!

realllly...im truly surprised----i do my own blowouts but i have close friends who have been going there for yrs and their hair is healthy and beautiful...and their hair types are 3a-4z
but your very right their prices are priceyyy...
i hope all works out but Im glad you left when you did...whewww chile!!!

Reading your experiences, I am just like wow. I'm glad your hair wasn't damaged. Reading this just reminds me to never go to the salon. Glad you shared your story.

Okay, I just read your DR salon thread. Girl, If I was you I'd never go to another salon in my life. However, I found you a DR salon in Brooklyn that two YouTubers have had a good experience with, regarding their natural hair. Taren916 and Alodia80.

Yeah, I told DH about all the drama at the salon yesterday and showed him the photos. He once drove me back to Harlem to have "tree braids" removed and to get his money back. If DH was with me yesterday he probably would have had me leave right after the shampoo when the girl was too shocked about my curls.

Did Taren suffer from heat damage? I thought her hair was at least 3c but it looks almost wavy now when wet in the video. Taren's roller set: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jivaRnwF6fk

Alodia80 says had a bad Dominican salon experience at the salon and said she argued for the entire 4 hours with them. http://youtu.be/5_i-3_yQaA0?t=9m22s

Her texture is 3a/b/c so I wonder why they gave her such a hard time: http://youtu.be/uUEiiHHv_tE?t=43s

^^ your right her curl pattern is looser than ours. Never mind, I just watched Alodia80's video I posted for you earlier. Her results were nice, but it sounds like she didn't have a good "experience" she starts talking about it briefly at about 8:50 mins. I think she PM'd Taren and went to the same DR salon.

NappyNelle

I received a call this morning from Erin at Drybar to apologize and to offer me a complimentary appointment with a stylist familiar with my hair type. She would personally select the stylist. I declined but it was a nice gesture.

Ally Webb, the owner, also replied to my yelp review and asked me to contact her. I sent an email just now to let her know Erin called.

I'm glad they were prompt to contact you after that fiasco but I wouldn't want to go back either. It really shouldn't be this difficult to find a salon that can straighten type 4 hair.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I am so glad you left. I stayed one time for more and more abuse and got 3 inches wacked off at the very end of my visit. NEVER AGAIN!

@Amarilles hey I didn't know you were Dominican! I'm Dominicana too

Its true what you say about the salons. Ever since I went natural (6 years in Sept) I can count with one hand how many times I've been to a salon. I have ALOT of hair and its long, natural so right there that's a big no no. To make it worse, I am very particular on how my hair is treated so to stylists I am persona non grata. When I'm done they usually ooh and aahhh but pray I don't come back LOL OR they charge me $20 more

My currently stylist is Dominican and specializes on natural hair, but I only see her once or twice a year if that. I do my own rolos and mix my own conditioners. She is fantastic and treats my hair with care. I always send people her way because good stylists like her are hard to find.

But the truth is, it really is difficult to find a stylist that can manage our hair type. (Ours being 4a/b/z). My sister has waist length natural hair, so I thought, hey I'll try her stylist...this was after 7 years of DIY. While it was not a terrible experience...it wasn't worth my time or the money. I'm staying out of the salon because no one treats my hair as good as I do!

Plus, my sister has a completely different texture and I shoulda known better. Again, it wasn't a nightmare experience, but it wasn't anything to "email" home about either.

I completely believe you. Many of them do not like kinky hair at all. They are big proponents of relaxers and straight hair. When I have a lot of new growth, I go to them with my hair fully detangled, conditioned down to a tee, and all they have to do is rollerset and blow dry which is not hard b/c my products make it easy for them. Nonetheless, they still push a relaxer and do not like kinky hair. If your hair is 3c and under, that's fine with them and they won't skin up their face as much.

lana

I'm sorry about your experience with your sister's stylist.

I don't have a problem with stylists that can't manage my hair type. I have a problem with stylists who advertise that they do work with natural type 4 hair and it turns out to be BS. I don't like having my time or money wasted and I don't like risking damage to my hair. This fiasco cost me a $5 subway ride and hopefully no heat or brush damage.
