I have a sneaking suspicion...

...that my satin pillowcase is causing my hair breakage. Aren't satin products, pillowcases and such supposed to protect your hair while you are sleeping? For me the opposite seems to be true.:perplexed Since June I have been growing my hair back from a BC and all I did was sleep on my satin pillowcase every night without wrapping my hair first. When I went to blowout my hair a couple of days ago I had a lot of breakage on my ends and I mean A LOT. I knew that there were ssks and I had been dealing with them but all this? I even had the wost ssks. There were 5-10 strands of hair bound together by a single clumpy knot at the end of my nape hairs. Throughout my hair journey I have found a way to reduce my hair's breaking off by doing low manipulation hairstyles and avoiding combing and brushing. All through the summer I didn't comb my hair, I only finger detangled my hair in the shower and that was it. I rocked my TWA and kept everything low manipulation for the whole 4 months so what gives?

Hmmm...I hope the satin is not snagging your rends. My ends used to break a lot even though I was PSing and being gentle with my hair. Have you done a porosity test? It may be your protein/moisture balance.

I wear a bonnet and sleep on a satin pillowcase(for nights where I rip the bonnet off in my sleep.) I feel like when I was only sleeping on the pillowcase, my hair dried out a lot. Something about the bonnet helps me retain moisture I think.

I paiir the pillowcase with a scarf and/or bonnet. Just the pillowcase causes my hair to be out in the open and dried out. I also tend to move around a lot when I sleep so that can cause manipulation if you do that just on a pillowcase.

My hair has to be confined in a bonnet or scarf to prevent breakage. Sleeping on a satin pillowcase, the hair is still loose and free so the hairs can potentially rub against each other, tangle, etc.

I agree with the above...there are times when Im lazy and sleep on the satin pillowcase only, and I can tell a big difference between that and when I also wear a scarf. I think just being exposed to the air all night makes it get dry. My hair is always softer in the am when I tie it up. Satin is a definitely big improvement from a cotton pillowcase, but IMO a step beyond that is wearing a sating scarf or bonnet.

I think hair that is tied down is best protected because the hair is not moving around, being pulled and the ends are not out wrapping around each other. IMO, the next safest is loose hair in the bonnet.

BUT, hair that is wrapped, braided or plaited is the most protected, whether it's in a scarf, in a bonnet or on a pillowcase.

Satin pillowcases may not be the problem.

Sounds like fine hair issues (I could be wrong). I find that fine hair NEEDS a comb, seamless of course, run through it more often than not. Course strand ladies dont seem to need it as much. Skinny strands can SSK at the tiniest freak wind and shed hairs get caught in the ends and there's MORE problems.. Wet manipulation can also be a breakage problem if the hair is particularly fragile. Perhaps your hair would like stretched styles better?

Have you had any retention or are you just breaking even? How is your shed hair removal process with the finger combing? Have you changed products over the summer (you got a base regimen?)?

reading this thread made me get out of bed to find a bonnet for extra protection. i sleep on satin pillowcases even though they're way slippery so sometimes i end up on one of my cotton ones. i haven't found any breakage due to it, but i know that even on a satin pillowcase, if my edges arent secured by a satin scarf, they'll be a mess in the morning, and it can lead to breakage.
