I have a question... and I hope I haven't...

been dead wrong all these years, but is Christianity a religion?

I've always been led to believe it is a religion, just as Islam, Catholicism, Judiasm, Buddhism and all the others are.

Is Christianity a religion? Thanks.

It depends on who you ask. For me and many other believers it's a lifestyle. To others, it's a religion. Most textbooks describe Christianity as one of the 3 major monotheistic religions.

I was reading an article the other day that some young people are starting to call themselves "followers of Christ" instead of Christians because to them it's more of a lifestyle than a religion.

That's what I thought... I knew I haven't been wrong the last 36 years!

My cousin INSISTS that Christianity is not a religion, but he does speak a lot about "following Christ", so maybe the lifestyle angle is where he's coming from.

To me lifestyle should be synonymous with the religion. They are one and the same. Just depends on who you ask, as you said.

Thanks Jen... and thanks for not taking all day. My cousin is waiting :)

Religion - Websters

1. belief in and worship of God or gods
2. a specific system of belief or worship, etc. built around God, code of ethics, a philosophy of life, etc.

Sounds like every thing we have been taught by God and our Savior.

If we get to caught up in semantics than we will loose sight of the teachings and become cultist. Paul instructed against this.
Catholism is of Christian religion. Those others are separate religions of their own.

The word "religion" has gained such a back connotation. I don't say I'm "religious." I'm a follower of Christ, and I leave it at that.

i thought about it, and i think it would be better to classify it as

a religion which has an impact on my lifestyle

I think a lifestyle because there are so many branches of Christianity. I usually think of denominations and such as religions because they focus more on a particular doctrine. That's why I'm more likely to ID myself as a Christian rather than a Baptis, or Pentecostal, etc.

To me personally, Christianity is not JUST a religion, it is a relationship with God for me.

You are right Blossssom... it is a religion in the sense that there are set attitudes, beliefs, and practices... but Christianity also has to do with how we live, fellowship, serve, and worship our Lord. :yep:

I'm gonna piggy-back on this. I don't say that I am religious either. I have a relationship with God. I'm not going through any motions or doing what I do out of habit. I want to be like Christ.
