"I got a different grade of hair, so it won't grow likes yours.""

This is how it usually goes. If they see a white person with long hair..they say.."okay they white". If they see a bi racial female with long hair they say."okay she mixed..that's why". Light skin "okay her grandma' them white" Dark with long hair."oh they one of dem dark skin Indian people. Do you see where I'm going with this? Girl I'm half Carribean..my hair isn't long..but I like to say it's pretty healthy..let me tell you I had someone tell me that my hair was like that because my daddy isn't American. uggh! Get me?? NUFF SAID! AND I'm OUTTTTTTT!

its crazy because when you tell people about lhcf they think ur a hair fiend with no life. especially when i email people a link to a post i made or a link to my fotki. even my own sister wrote me back saying "i didnt know how obsessed you are with your hair, i hope your hair is not your identity" ... i was like, is she serious.. than she goes "but i would be lying if i said i wasnt jealous on how beautiful your hair is growing"....

i mean. come on people. even the fam be playing you lol

Wow.....wow.....

Yes, this is what my co-worker/friend said after I told her about LHCF. After weeks of bunning, I decided to swang surf and wear my hair out today. She complimented me on how much it has grown and how healthy it looks, then asked me what I did....I explained my regimen and told her the basics.....DC, Co-wash, protein/moisture balance, and porosity control...then I recommended that she visit LHCF to learn more, even offered to pay the $6.50 ya'll.....but she won't even bother because according to her, our hair are different grades.....I tried to explain to her that although we might have different hair textures, ALL HAIR GROWS and that she is most likely having a problem with retention (from what I can see)......anyway, she didn't take my advice....Don't ya'll hate when people want help, but then take the easy way out because they ASSUME that black hair doesn't grow!!! I hate that....I can't even tell ya'll how many ladies won't hear me out:wallbash:....

we all know theres truth to that.

the tighter or nappier the hair the more it takes for maintenance and therefore is harder to "grow"

the looser the texture the less dry it is, less tangled, less nappy so it is easier to "grow".

of course there are exclusions to this but its truth for the most part.

I think if you replace "grow" with "retain", I may be more inclined to agree with you.

Before the boards I did not have really bad hair practices. My hair has always grown relaxed or natural; I stopped relaxing because I did not ever seem to have longer hair even though it was growing. My last relaxer was 1/07, I BC'd 5/08 The picture in my siggy is from 11/08. For the first time in my adult life my hair is APL, and still growing in it's kinky state. The difference is I am caring for and retaining what hair is growing.

There are two biracial familes that live near me. The first one with all the children have from 2a-3c hair they wear there hair loose more and go longer without style maintanence and none of the children have hair longer than BSL. The other family has 3a-4a but always have protective styles and they hair is just as long if not longer. Curly hair is drier then straight hair, but curly hair no matter the pattern is going to have some of the same challenges: drier hair and tangles.

People achieve what they believe. It just amazes me how often people refuse to even consider believing something outside of their current experiences. :nono:
Yup..Ya gotta believe! (parappa..lol)
It's kinda sad how some people don't even think that their hair will grow..I mean when I first found this site I was bursting with excitement and trying to help others but oftentimes peoplewould just dismiss me and think that my hair grew because I had "soft hair."
Yeah..right..my hair looked like a hot mess before, and hair is hair! It'll grow but retention is the key!

Girl, I know all about that! They want to be all on your back about caring for your hair, but everytime a hair question comes up who are they asking? Yes, Beanie, the family hairologist. But someone here said it best : Black people make caring for your hair taboo. We need to brush it off our shoulders and go for ours!

Should've.....I'm sure she'll listen once my hair reaches my goal right before her very eyez....then maybe she can get her hair journey on and poppin...

That's when the start trying to memic you and try to remember everything you told them in the beginning. And wanna just "try" things.:lachen:

This was the story of my life when I first joined LHCF... Everyone asked me..hell,they even asked my sister what I was doing... We told them.. and got that.."Oh yall got indian in your family" or my favorite lines. when I told them my goal. "Black peoples hair is only suppose to reach a certain length your not gonna get that type of hair" and when I hit BSL in 06 I got the .. "Is that a weave?!" ...nah fool is the hair u said we couldn't grow... :lachen:

People need to come out of their shells and realize... we all can have beautiful long hair.. some of us gottah give alittle more TLC for such..others really dont.. either way we can achieve it.

I still tell people about what I did to get my hair to grow and this site and get that  .... and glazed over eyes.. followed by that know it all attitude...I stop waisting my oxygen.

Keep talking some will listen others wont. But at least it gives them something to poinder. I'm glad someone told me about the site! If not, would still be lost!!!

My Dominican friend says this! I'm like what the **** is soft hair?!?!?!?!?

Yes I have heard the soft hair too. I mean what is that? Growing hair takes a lot of work. Believe you me when I tell you I am a member of longhaircommunity, and those ladies and men with super long hair do a lot of work to grow their hair out. It's the same with people of African descent. But so many people don't want to do the work.

It's gotten to the point where I want to open my own shop and take those very same people, force them into my chair, and help them with their hair habit to retain the growth they are getting.

I remember someone told me I had good hair (when it was long, now it's short). She said her hair is nappy and it just won't grow. I then asked her how long can she go without a relaxer. She said "Girl I have to get it permed at least 6 weeks, my newgrowth is out of control". I then told her, your hair is growing or you wouldn't have newgrowth, and by the timing of them it seems your hair grows very quickly. She didn't have anything to say after that.

Girl I wouldn't even get mad about it. When person chooses to self defeat themselves and you have evidence and advice to show them a way out of failure it's up to them to sink or swim and no matter which they choose to stop complaining. Some people just want you to pacify them.

My sister told me this nonsense today! She went to our hair dresser who told her that she will never have hair longer than shoulder length. I told her about my goal of MBL and her hairdresser (we have the same one) told her that MY hair will always be longer than my sisters because my texture is different. We are both 4b's so I'm confused??? Ignorance is bliss.

It all goes in one ear and out the other with those types. I just give basic advice: wash and dc once a week, moisturize daily.

Anything past that, and they'll get a glazed over look in their eyes :lachen:

Basically. Wash, dc, wet set once a week. No direct heat and wrap it up at night. Anything more they're going to look at you like you're crazy.

I don't know if it will ever stop. After being a member of LHCF since 2005, I'm so used to it by now. But why does it still surprise me?

The story of my life

NO ONE listen to me so i don't explain. some times i feel like saying i rub cat pee in my hair:ohwell:
why ask what i do if your just going to tell me my hair is "special" stfu and don't ask then.
i DO NOT talk about my hair EVER because of this crap
i know what i'm going to hear.

i can understand if your taken aback because it's something new but don't ask questions ....i give you my answer then completely disregard my answer. what's the point of asking then?:ohwell:.

you can't tell some people about hair. their hair could 2 inches long, with no hair line and they will swear my hair is going to fall out if i with continue my methods and what is your hair doing love? it's one tight weave application away from you looking like homer simpson:sad:

i give up and don't waste my energy

i'll say i asked santa for longer hair that's how:rolleyes:
the very thought basic hair care methods made it grow  the horror *FAINTS*

To the blue font: Hillarious.

Homer looks like he's thinking: Huh, you talking about me?

Its a battle and mentality that needs to be fought one head of hair at a time.

If you like her, write down a list of books that she can pick up: Caroline Gray, Cathy Howse, etc.

Agreed. Istopped giving advice a long time ago....
I tell them nothing....

It is very emotional for bw that have never had long hair.

I just compared a shed hair of mine with a piece of 8.5x11 printer paper and my hair is over 8.5 inches long!!! I'm in shock. I would never have beleived.
