"I got a different grade of hair, so it won't grow likes yours.""

I have viewed hundreds on pics and I firmly believe that some hair types have a tendency towards faster growth.

I understand what you're saying, but do you believe that you can't grow long hair, just because you can't grow it as fast as your daughter? Or because your hair is finer and more fragile whereas hers is thicker/coarser?

Yeah, I get that 'good hair' comment too. but I ALWAYS respond 'you do too.' all textures of hair is 'good hair.'

I can relate. To be honest, I first found LHCF a few years ago, but I dismissed it. I took a look around, saw all the long hair, and decided that this must be a website for people with "good hair," and that I wouldn't be welcome. I didn't give it a second thought until earlier this year.

Traycee's blog is what convinced me to give LHCF another try. She kept stating that she had 4b hair, she shared her daily regimen and her ups and downs, and she really humanized the whole hair journey for me. Before that, I NEVER would've believed that it was possible.

we all know theres truth to that.

the tighter or nappier the hair the more it takes for maintenance and therefore is harder to "grow"

the looser the texture the less dry it is, less tangled, less nappy so it is easier to "grow".

of course there are exclusions to this but its truth for the most part.

In 2007, when I decided to take care of my hair, my sister told me that my hair won't grow long because of the type of hair we had. So many conversations were about terminal length, black people's hair not being like "other" people's hair, etc... a year later she couldn't believe how much my hair had grown and improved in health. To her - it was THICK and unbelievably long :-)

Some people need to see these things happen to people like them IRL, they sometimes need someone who has had similar hair issues as they have to show them their progress, this encourages them to believe they can do it too. I'm glad I have been able to show ladies close to me that it is possible and hope I can keep doing it :-)

P.S. I have to admit that I have a few friends who have thicker strands than I do, so their hair is less fragile than mine BUT if they don't take very good care of their hair, they do get breakage/damage. Friends who have less coily hair, CAN and DO have hair damage/breakage.

Oh well, that's her loss. Don't let it bother you. I do wonder why she even bothered to ask for hair advice since her "grade" of hair is different . It was kind for you to give her advice and even offer to pay for subscription. You can lead a horse to water...

eta: lmao @ dang near everyone saying you can lead a horse to water . I should have read through first.

I can't really judge because I had this same mindset not too long ago. I thought it's either you are gentically predisposed to have long hair or you didn't. It isn't until I got here that I relaized that if you care for your hair properly, it will get long. It just takes patience...there is no such thing as a good or bad grade of hair.

I usually won't talk hair with people. Or weight loss strategies. Useless discussions most of the time.

So true Allie ..... I hate to say it .. but I really don't like folks coming up to me asking about how I do my hair ... most of the time they really don't pay any attention what to i'm saying or dispute it .. a waste of my time :nono: .

I love "swang surf"!

Just came in here to say there is no best or worst grade of hair. I saw someone say that and it made my teeth itch.

I have a girlfriend whose dd's hair was really long, much longer than my daughter. When I joined this site and started practicing good hair care, my dd's hair flourished and is now twice the length of my friends dd, whose hair appears to be the same length. My friends response: yall got that good hair, her hair just started growing fast is all.

Sadly, that's how I feel as well. Even when my hair was relaxed I had to fight with it:catfight:and I would be told I had "good hair" so their hair couldn't look like that (not that my hair was that great imo anyways). People also say the same thing about my weight because I had a kid and I'm skinny. I get so mad when people chalk off my hard work to nothing.:flush:Yes, I have a metabolism...but it only stays that way because I try to eat right and I exercise..anyone else can do the same. For people who show a genuine interest and desire to help themselves, I'll stick my neck out to do whatever I can, but I'm not going to waste my time on someone who just wants a pity party. Carry that somewhere else messing with my happy mood, lol.

Well, this may be unusual, but the people in my family (aunts, cousins) with the longest hair have the thickest, coarsest, nappiest (and strongest!) hair out of all of us. Their hair grows to bra strap length by just leaving it alone. Now my aunts with soft coily hair (4A?) have trouble growing hair past collarbone length.

I sported a very short haircut for yeeaaaaarss (ie. Halle Berry). Then I decided to start growing it. When i reached shoulder length all of a sudden people were saying 'its because you have indian in you'. I mean friends who had known me for over 20 years. I asked them to introduce me the members of my family who are Indian because i have yet to meet them

msa, that's how I felt too. My sister is half black/half mexican, and I remember wishing that I had hair as long as hers. Then after soooooo many hair mistakes when I was younger, I almost gave up....like a lot of ladies I've come across....Since joining LHCF, I feel a responsibility to help those that want healthier hair and its sooooo frustrating when they don't listen...All hair is good hair and I get offended when ppl say I have a different grade of hair and that why its growing....no, it grows because I put a lot of work into it:yep:..I'm gonna show her Sera's fotki tomorrow on our lunch break...thanks again!

The bolded is all there is to it. "I got a different grade of hair, so it won't grow like yours" is just an excuse for L-A-Z-I-N-E-S-S.

If you want to reap the rewards of anything, you have to WORK at it CONSISTENTLY. I will never understand why people feel that desire alone is all that is needed to achieve goals.

I've been in similar situations, but what KILLs me is that the same people who are complimenting my "grade of hair:rolleyes:" are the same people who saw me go through every type of hair horror growing up. The same people who made fun of my hair growing up, and told me I had bad hair, now seem to think I got some magical potion that gave me hair that grows! People are so set in their ways that they can't possibly believe that my hair has grown because I learned how to take care of it properly! It boggles the mind.

Thanks for asking.

My hair is growing now. It's just barely shoulder length but started at neck length. :yep: In the past I didn't know how to care for my hair. I abused and neglected my hair quite a bit. :nono:

The difference in my hair and my daughter's hair is her hair does grow faster and without the extra TLC. When she was younger, I did nothing to encourage her hair to grow and her hair was waist length (granted she was 2 ft tall).

I am just thankful to have discovered LHCF, with the many sistas and their vast knowledge.

Okay good. As long as you know it is possible for you to grow your hair out too, even if it takes a little longer than it might take your daughter. :yep:

The story of my life

NO ONE listen to me so i don't explain. some times i feel like saying i rub cat pee in my hair:ohwell:
why ask what i do if your just going to tell me my hair is "special" stfu and don't ask then.
i DO NOT talk about my hair EVER because of this crap
i know what i'm going to hear.

i can understand if your taken aback because it's something new but don't ask questions ....i give you my answer then completely disregard my answer. what's the point of asking then?:ohwell:.

you can't tell some people about hair. their hair could 2 inches long, with no hair line and they will swear my hair is going to fall out if i with continue my methods and what is your hair doing love? it's one tight weave application away from you looking like homer simpson:sad:

i give up and don't waste my energy

i'll say i asked santa for longer hair that's how:rolleyes:
the very thought basic hair care methods made it grow  the horror *FAINTS*

I agree that I didn't think my hair could grow long either. I did the bc about 4 years ago but didn't know how to take care of it so I relaxed it again. My cousin cut hers off around the same time and is now Bra strap length and I wish I would have took care of it... So now I have to start all over again. I am really encouraged by everyone because I wasn't raised to take care of my hair. It was all about school. I'm working on my dissertation and growing out my hair. When I walk across that stage in May I will be a happy Natural Phd sista!!!

I'm too the point I don't even try to explain anymore. Yesterday a co-worker commented on my hair and how good it looks natural. I said thank you and tried to lightly encourage her to go the natural way or at least give it a try. She then tells me how her hair isn't like mine. I must have some Caucasian in my family and how her father has given her straight up African hair. I wanted to say, what does African v/s Caucasian hair have to do with anything. :nono: I've seen plenty of native African's with long lovely hair. But I left it alone. It's futile to try to change people's mind if they think a race determines hair length. :ohwell:

YEAH Southernbella WT_ was that?!!! :wallbash: Takes a while to get that there is no such thing.

Just say you have "good" hair and move on. Its really a waste of time. The techniques we've learned on LHCF came by trial and error and small alterations on basic hair care. Anyone can learn this stuff. Its up to them t use the advice.

I get this comment alot on Youtube, its very frustrating :wallbash:
Its either "yeah but you got that good hair" or they question my blackness with the infamous "yeah but ru mixed?"

I am having this same issue with a friend from school. She is the type of person who believes that only people with "good hair" can grow long hair. One day she had gotten on my nerves so much I finally just snapped, "well you might actually grow some hair if you stop relaxing every four weeks."

And no that is not an exaggeration. She relaxes every four weeks and has less than an inch of new growth. Her excuse is that she has a ton of new growth, but my thing is that if she has that much new growth, it seems like her hair would be longer. Yet her hair has been chin length the whole year.
