I dont get it. How does this girl have such nice hair???

Many threads on here discuss thickness of hair and statements are made that seem to assume that there is only one type of thickness that is "healthy" for black women. Does anyone consider that some people have one hair per follicle and others, six or less as common to them individually? There's texture and grade as well. Add to that, relaxers etc., and hair might appear to be thin when it's normal to that individual....???? Just a thought.

BTW, her mother looks W. Indian and her father is East African.

Actually, yes, because I am a little follicle challenged myself! But I actually based my statement on the look back through her hair journey, where her hair was clearly thicker and longer before she started doing it herself. I didn't realize I was throwing this much shade on the girl's hair game. But really and truly, I'm the only one who sees this, so maybe I'm just seeing something that's not there. I feel really twilight zone right now! She's doin' her thing...I'm gon' leave her alone.

^^You're not the only one who saw it. I noticed what I thought was breakage when I first looked at the video. But nevertheless, she's an adorable girl and if I saw her on the street I would think her hair was pretty.

InchHighPrivateEye Girl! Why didn't you speak up??? I'm up in this thread thinking "OK, something must be wrong with me."

And I agree with you, I'd think her hair looked nice. I guess I just expected more because usually when someone is big-upped on this board (Chime, for example), their hair is pretty exceptional. I think too, the thread was asking how she could have such nice hair with such an abusive-sounding regimen, and I thought her hair was showing some of the signs of the abuse.

LHCF has higher standards so her relaxing every 4 weeks is too much. Her hair is still very nice looking, even though her methods are not LHCF approved.

LOL. SMH @ how I've been cosigning with you in silence for about 2 days. When I saw the thread was bumped I was like, "oh yeah, let me comment because Cherokee-n-Black is out there by herself on a limb right now"

And your last sentence is exactly it. It's not that her hair looks bad, but if the thread is about how does she escape the abuse then, while her hair handles her regimen better than mine probably would, I do see signs of abuse.

 Stop it. The board gestapo might come get you! I think I've said this before (but I might deny it under interrogation) that stretching is a growth inhibitor--or I guess a breakage accelerator--for me. My hair is at its best (when relaxed) if relaxed regularly in short intervals--just not THAT short.

I'm joking! :lachen: Please don't come get me.:nervous2: I uses to get relaxed every 4 weeks from my mom root to tip when I was younger. My hair was long and healthy looking. I think it is because mom used to grease my scalp and hair with sulfur 8. That grease basically made my hair even more relaxer resistant than it was.:yep: We all know improper hair practices, but sometimes it works for some people. She is just blessed that way.:giggle:

Her hair looks great. Not everything can be explained by a "regimen". Some people have hair that is stronger than others. Some people have hair that grows faster than others. Some people have hair that responds to chemicals, heat, etc. better than others....and on and on...

@niqu92 @D.Lisha

So is it PSing and stretching that is stopping your progress? What type of PS were you doing?

abcd09 I would say that it was mainly due to the fact that I wasn't paying much attention to my ends. Seems like I was PSing so hard, that I neglected to really pay attention to my ends as far as dusting and trimming goes. *sigh* oh well, you live and your learn :)

she looks mixed, so she might so she might have inherited her long hair from someone in the family. Im never really impressed when mixed people have long hair because it pretty effortless for them. Her hair is nice though.

Can you explain how does "being mixed" make having long hair easier than someone who's say...just black? I didn't know non-blacks have a special long hair gene.

some people's hair does better when it is straight because there is less opportunity for damage. plus she probably only relaxes a little of her roots and then straightens it again. then it is probably heavily weighed down or moisturized with oil and she probably leaves it alone after that. i can see how straight hair as a low manip regimen could lead to healthy hair.

At the bolded, I can go a straight week of just applying leave-in on the ends and serum with straight hair. I can also go a couple extra days if I end my straight hair with a braidout.

If it wasn't for the potential damage to the ends, I would flat iron more often too.

One thing I remember from college: A student from Jamaica told me, "You have beautiful hair... but you abuse it."

I had no idea how to take care of my hair. I was just living on the good care my mom put into it for many years. Eventually it caught up with me.

I thought the science said that straight hair with less curl is less likely to get damaged whether you took care of it or not. Perhaps that's what the poster meant... straight hair in the family, ehem. Everyone calm down. :look:

What are you you talking about? I never said that non blacks have a" special long hair gene". I do notice that some non blacks do have long hair though. They dont do all the stuff we do to get it either. Theirs is just naturally long. So, when i said that maybe she inherited her hair from someone in the family thats all i meant. I dont see what the big deal is. Most of the mixed or biracial people i know have long hair and they didnt get it from their black side! They don't have to do hair journeys, and protective styling to get long hair they just have it. Im not a scientist so i couldnt you tell why. I know you don't have to mixed to have long hair, but in my opinion ,it is easier to achieve for some then others, so if your offended then oh well too bad, its a free country.

Sound like my mom hair. She does nothing but grease it, gel it, perm it once a month, and it still grows like nobody business.

Man imma jst give her her props, the bi$h has some BOMB hair. 'Nuff said lol

@Nique92 Gurl I am soooooo with you on this (bolded). Man pre-lhcf I had APLish EVEN hair. My last two relaxer updates were a complete disaster, because I was protective styling so d@mn hard that I didn't even realize my hair was breaking in the process O.O. Plus my last REAL trim was givin by my stylist about a year ago :look:. I'm currently making plans to get back up with her so that she can freshen up my ends and I am going to start completely over. I will start by getting rid of some of my useless products as well! lol.

D.Lisha yeah i feel you it reaaally sucks the last time i was BSL was when i was a junior in highschool lol this board ad me going crazy with hair products like i would go to walmart to buy some bandaids but would leave with 2 bottles of conditioner and a new styling product that had good reviews on the board.all the products and ps-ing totally killed my hair.even my mom noticed that. when i look at the pics of my hair from last year to my hair now its such a huge change so now im starting completely over too

@niqu92 @D.Lisha

abcd09 yeah stretching for so long really hurt me because i was stretching for like 12 weeks at a time (Prior to joining LHCF i would stretch my relaxers for 9wks)and my hair was always breaking.my hair also became very thin (and my hair has always been extremley thick) and dull i was using waaaay to many products and im starting to think that "cheap" products such as HE,GF,etc. dont work well with my hair because my hair looked the best back when i was using mizani and kerakare exclusively. In terms of PS-ing all i really did was braidouts and tie my hair into a bun

I can't speak for the member you quoted, but other ethnicities seem to have an easier time with retention, so I could see how being mixed could help (if she got her hair genes from the "other" pool).

On her website she has a photo with her parents at her graduation and they both look Black.

THIS!

ETA: I know I am not supposed to feed the trolls but I.can't. help.it..

What does "mixed" hair look like anyway (I've seen anything from 1a-4b, short and long).

Her hair appears to be strong, able to take a lot of manipulation. Doesn't have a thing to do with racial make-up.

Other ethnicities seem to have an easier time with retention due to the structure of their hair. Straight hair is structurally stronger than curly or kinky hair. Every curvature in the hair shaft is a weak point that is more susceptible to breakage. GENERALLY, the more curvatures you have along your hair shaft, the weaker your hair. (This explains why kinkier textures most be treated like fine silk. It GENERALLY cannot withhold the same kinds of practices that more looser textures can). This is a fact of life that has nothing to do with how you take care of your hair. I think the girl you mentioned benefits from having a looser texture that is not as NATURALLY susceptible to damage as many of the type 4's on this site (of course many counteract this by moisturizing and DCing). So yes there is a correlation between belonging to an ethnic group where a straighter and looser hair texture is more common and having longer hair. This is not to say that kinkier types cannot have longer hair. This is just to say that it will likely require more effort. If anyone has doubts, feel free to do your own research.

she is mixed, for any who care to know , it says so in her FAQ's section of her website.

Here i copied and pasted it. 1. Are you mixed?

There are a whole bunch of ethnicities represented in my family tree, but it’s nothing so simple as “My mom is white and my dad is Black”. I have Spanish, French, Cherokee, White, Black, and Bahamian blood running through my veins, and those are just the ones I know about!
