My hair color was lifted awhile ago. I got tired of it and added red manic panic and it came out pretty cool. Now I'm tired of it, it's been like that for the last month I guess. So I tried to dye over it with bigen bluest black and it hasn't changed a bit, maybe a tiny bit purplish but no black took anywhere in my hair. My hair used to dye black so easily. Will I need a chemical black to color my hair? Why is it not coloring dark when it's been previously lifted? :perplexed

I am not on my computer so I can't add in pics so I'll try to explain what I think is happening.

First you bleached your hair (lift) , opening the hair cuticle.

Next you added manic panic to your lifted hair and the result is a deep red because the dye pigments were allowed to bind strongly to the cuticle.

Then you attempted to darken the color with bigen that binds to the outer cuticle. However the manic panic dye occupies much of the surface(and some internal) of the cuticle. This leaves little space for the black dye to deposit onto the cuticle.

It seems that your hair has undergone a lot of chemical treatment.
Have you thought about using henna and indigo to achieve your wanted color?

You may have to lift your hair again to rid dye deposits, henna, and indigo for black color.

Back in the day there was a product I used to get at Sally's that would remove semi permanent hair colors without stripping the hair..... it was a liquid solution that you put on and then sit under the dryer for about 15 minutes, rinse out, and then repeat until the color was gone with NO damage at all to your hair!! It's been about 9 years since I used it, haven't been able to find it...... I forgot the name but it was in a blue bottle.

Updated!!! It's called Clairol Uncolor semi permanent hair color remover. It is in a bottle (blue/turquoise) already to use, you do NOT need to mix it with anything. It will not strip your hair, it just fades the temporary color..... it won't work on permanent hair color.
