Wow! I'm so glad to see this post. I have been struggling with "What hair type am I" for the longest. At first, I just assumed I was a 4b, but a friend thought I was type 3b/3c. Then, I thought 4a. Now I am thinking maybe I am somewhere in the 3's. My hair is fine, but it is not coarse. I guess it appears to be thick to other people. People have told me that my hair looks thick, but if feels thin. It is easily wet and it straightens completely when wet. When it dries, it curls or kinks back up. I can comb through it pretty easily wet or dry (my new growth). Help! What type am I???
Yeah...I gave up on trying to figure out my hair texture a long time ago......I just have relaxed fine hair. That's all I know. Oh and it's dark brown/black.
I just would frustrate and piss myself off trying to figure it out---especially after some natural people said their natural hair wasn't really like the new growth they had when they relaxed.
I was so confused because I was reading the post "How often do you retouch" and it completely threw me off. A lot of 4's were saying how often their retouches last and right now I am at about 9 weeks and I believe I could go 2 more weeks at the very least. I am not having any shedding or breaking either. The hair in back is definitely 3a or so, but the rest totally confuses me!
I assumed that my hair was a type 4A/4B because when I need a touch-up my stretched out new growth looks like little s's in certain parts and z's in others. Also I compared my hair to the pictures of the women in Andre's book. My hair closely resembled the 4A hair models.
However, my hair has been a lot softer since the EFA's and MSM. It used to be quite coarse feeling...
Hey ya'll...I'm new to this and don't know my hair type either. My hair is really thick and dense, it comes out the follicle thick and stays that way the whole way down. People always tell me that my hair looks like it would feel rough cause its so thick but is really soft. It sucks up moisture like a sponge, which makes it dry sometimes. My hair used to stay straight in water, but now it has these pretty waves in it cause it's more healthy now. I can go long between my touchups, like 3 or 4 months and not have a big problem with the wavy new growth. I've been getting presses and perms so long I can barely remember what my hair was like when I was younger, all I can remember was that I was soooo tenderheaded! I gave my mama a whole lot of grief if she even came in my presence with a comb. Anybody got any ideas?

That sounds kinda of like my hair.
Well to me my guess would be type 4 because it seems like your hair is course but fine.
When your hair is wet it gets straight quickly so that would be type 3
When it dries it kinks back is type 4.
so to my conclusion I think it would be
3a/4a

Nessa, 3A hair is very loosely curled and has very big curls about the size of a salt & pepper shaker (or a little smaller). 4A is tightly coiled ringlets that may resemble corkskrews.
I'm not sure you can have those two mixtures on one head. I may be wrong, but they are so very different in texture. Someone help me out, is there such a hair type as 3a/4a?
Okay. I am absolutely sure of one thing and that is that I have more than one type of hair on my head. In the center of the top/back of my head, it is pretty thick. It is really dry there too. I can almost saturate it at night with S curl and it is still dry the next morning. Still, I can comb through it really easily. In back (lower), I can hardly tell the new growth from the relaxed hair. The only difference is the color. The sides are closer to the lower back. I believe I see S's, but even S's and Z's are starting to look alike to me.
TYPE 3's your new growth is the same texture as relaxed hair. STRAIGHT but with a slight curl to it. TYPE3A has curls the size of quarter or bigger.3's hair is easily wet and will get striaght in water. This hair is NOT coarse. Type 3B curls are in lil smaller in the new growth but still straight in texture. TYPE 3C starts to get a lil kinky and curls and anout pencil size. the hair is still straight in texture.
TYPE4 is kinky/coarse. meaning it's dry feeling if left without oils or water to moisturize it. It is wirery in texture, and curls are tiny like a coffee stirrer size. it takes longer to wet this kind of hair, and most often will not get completely straight when wet
TYPE4B is the same as 4A however the curls are tighter and they tend to be in a z shape.
You are probably right. I have flip-flopped between these types so... Also, the middle is where it usually breaks. It's doing much better now though because of you guys. Thanks!
Okay, then I believe I am definitely 4a in the top/middle, 3b in back and 3c in front and on the sides. Thanks. My hair is cut really short too right now, about 3 inches. Did I mention that? It is not even long enough to have quarter sized curls. -smile-
OK u know what???
U learn something everyday. I was think that type 3 hair was liek my sister and Mia Cambell, Chilli and Mya. But after reading this my hair sounds like a type 3C. When my hair is natural I can comb thru it while wet there are tangles but the curls are not really tight they are more like cork screws. Also when my new growth comes in it comes in thick and wavy I do nto have a hard time managing it especially if I tie it down while wet or braid it up only thing is it make my hair look liek a helmet because me ends appear so much thinner so I always end up realxing at about 8 weeks....12 at the most

okay according to your thing i am 3c/4a which i suspected. I always thought it was 4a/4b but i dont have a z pattern. my hair when i was younger looked a little like gloria ruben not exactly. my hair is in braids and when i wet my hair line it is straight and then some parts stay smooth and the ends form a little c. the loose hairs around the braids form a s like a phone cord. some of the hair in the braids turn in a spiral. i have had turn some of the braids because my hair would just turn it. i am thinking this is 3c/4a??
maybe andre's book is more clear on the different hair types. cause i know i sure am confused. God bless you all.
Sorry to throw a monkey wrench into things but doesn't your length have something to do with the texture of your new growth? I am a 4a. When my hair was arm pit length, my new growth was always wavy because there was more weight on it. I could go four months between touch ups. Now that my hair is short, my new growth will be kinkier. However, now I have about a half inch of new growth and it is straight when wet because it is only a half inch. The last time I had braids, I had two inches of new growth and it was all kinky when wet. I don't think you can accurately determine your natural texture if you have relaxed hair. New growth is scab hair. Most natural women will tell you that they guessed wrong about their texture when they had relaxed hair. Some women who thought they were 4a were actually 3b and some 3c's were actually 4b's. Either way there are different types of 4a hair. If your hair has two out of the three characteristics of a hair type, then it is probably best describes your hair. That is just what I think and I am just about 99.99% sure I have 4a hair.
HR, i definitely agree that the weight of the hair can affect how it behaves. i've always gone 4 months between relaxers though. now that i know what products work for me, i don't think it's terribly important. i just think it's funny that my assumption all this time has probably been wrong.
OK now I am confused to. EMUGURL help me out!!!!!!!
I go 3 months without relaxes and probably could go longer. My hair is thick and the strands are very thick. My hair wets okay (not too hard to wet) but my hair waves (relaxed part and new growth too) when wet. My natural curl pattern is a small S. My new growth is coarse but when moisturized well not a problem. I dont have corkscrew curls..just waves.....U know like the guys that brushed their hair in waves back in the day. Heat straightens my hair very easily. IE if I want my new growth to flatten out (I get BIG hair easily) all I have to do is sit under the hair dryer for 15 minutes or tie my hair down and it will straighten. I am thinking 4a. My hair can tangle easily too and it is coarse.
WHAT HAIR TYPE AM I????? I believe a 4! My hair looks like ArmyQT's hair.
I'm sure glad somebody had brought this up too. even though I put 4a/b im still not 100% sure what my hair type actually is. As a matter of fact, I think that my hair doesnt fit into a specific categoty that Andre describes. But after reading emgurl's post I think Im a 3c.
I am not emgurl. But from the looks of it you may be a type two and type four. From my guess I would say you are a 2a/2c/4a. That is what I think to the description.
well when its wet it is bone straight, but as it dries it gets frizzy waves w/o any oil or moisturizers. I only need to get a perm once or twice a years. I think if I can pick someone with the same hair type as me on the board it will be either tracy's hair. Tonya's hair, or Leejures.
HI naynay, from what you described,,, I think your right on track with it being 4A. I think your a canidate for possibly 3C as well. The only reason I'm not saying its 3C for sure is because you said your hair stays wavey when wet....
3C will be straight in the shower, and it isnt till you come out of the shower that it might wave up a bit. If your hair does this I thinks it's a combination 4A/3C ...
