How To Whip My Shea Butter

I have Shea butter in a tub and it's so damn hard!

I want to whip it, but do I have to have that whip thing that you use for cakes and stuff? I only have a blender. And how do you make it? I know for sure I don't want to add coconut oil to it. My hair hates it.

I use a mini food processor (got it from WalMart for like $5) to whip mine, add aloe vera gel/juice and whatever other oils I have on hand & like. Oh, also add a bit of agave nectar (1/2 tsp) for shine. No store bought butters make my hair feel better. Hope that helps!

pookaloo83. Lol, you sound like me 'that whip thing.'

JaelJael, Thanks. Can you post you recipe-step by step 'cause I am slow and should not be allowed to improvise and draw conclusions. Thanks.

Ill try that and flax seed gel this am.

*sigh* Dang! Guess I gotta go out and buy one. Now that I think about it I should go and borrow one from one of my family members. Thanks guys! So it needs a carrier oil or whatever? I can't just whip it alone?

@pookaloo83, I softened the Shea in the microwave for a few seconds, added EVOO, Peppermint, Rosemary EO's and Castor, but you use whatever oils you like. Then I used the electric hand-held beaters (got from Walmart for $6.99) to whip it. Add your oils as you go along, remember once it cools back to room temp it will solidify again, so add enough oils to dilute it well enough, so it will remain whipped and soft (the more oil, the softer it will remain)!

Gotcha! Thanks!

This is the basic recipe:
2 Tbsp shea butter
1/2 tsp agave nectar
3 Tbsp aloe vera gel/juice
2 Tbsp coconut oil
1 Tbsp olive oil
*Note: I play around with the oils, adding wheat germ oil, avocado oil & jojoba oil as I please. Usually no more than an additional 2 Tbsp total of all those oils to the coconut & olive oils. Here lately also add a bit of castor oil to the mix.

1. Whip shea butter 1st, until smooth/creamy.
2. Add aloe vera, whip again.
3. Add oils & agave nectar.
4. Whip again & enjoy!

Depending on desired consistency may need to add more shea butter.

I whip mine with a handheld mixer and use Wheat Germ Oil, Safflower Oil and a touch of olive oil as well.

Soften the Shea in the microwave just a tad, and start whipping. Once it starts to get white, I add the oils one at a time.

I have some vitamin e oil that I think I am going to add next time. Also try jojoba oil. Play around with it!

It can be a pain in the arse, but it is definitely worth it.

I made a shea butter mix about a month ago and used my blender :look: because I don't have a hand mixer thing-a-ma-jig yet *giggles* any- who... my concoction wasn't 'fluffy' like the butter results but.. I still use it *shrugs* I mixed shea butter, castor oil, wheat germ oil, tea tree, olive oil and a few drops of rosemary oil (and I think grape seed oil)... I plan to get a hand mixer for the next batch so I can get that 'fluffy effect' lol ya heard! The mixture is fine.. I mean it moisturizes/I like it.. its just not 'fluffy'

ETA: got my hand mixer yesterday.. So Im ready to get my fluffy mix on for my next batch :drunk:

I put my shea butter in a container, boil water on the stove, put a bowl in the water and place the container in the bowl. I leave it long enough to soften it, add my oils and aloe vera gel, hand whip with a plastic fork for 5-10 mins and that's it. Always works!

I want to try this... my hair loves the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing smoothie line...so I'd like to be a DIY'r ..

Where do you ladies get your shea butter from? I see some in small buckets at my local BSS, but I'd rather get the larger one.

I've see a few on amazon, but saw in one of the reviews that why the dude was selling in the box as shea butter, wasn't really shea butter.

Any tips or links would be appreciated!

TIA

This is EXACTLY how I do mine. I don't use it for my hair, only my skin, so I liquefy it this way and add my oils and whip it with a handheld blender. You can get them for under 20 bucks and it's worth every penny. After I make this big batch I put them in several mason jars and store them in the refrigerator.

I got a handheld mixer from walmart for $6 to mix my butters. It does a nice job. I found I get the best smooth consistency when I melt my butters in the microwave, solidify them a bit in the freezer (10-15minutes max), let them thaw a bit or zap them in the microwave for 20 seconds, and then mix. This way, the grainyness is eliminated and it is just really easy. While I'm whipping the butters I add in the oils and stuff. I don't really have a strategy or recipe. I just put in whatever I feel like putting in.

That's so funny and cute!
Yeah, I think you need one of those!

You HAND WHIP? With a plastic fork? For real? For only 5-10 minutes?

Good lord. I whip with the hand mixer for 15 minutes at least to get it white and smooth.

Maybe because I am doing more at a time?

Yes ma'am lol. For me, whipping my shea is just to make it smooth enough to pick up and put on my hair (and it stays smooth). I really do not care about a fluffy texture.....its still going to have the same effect once its in my hair. :perplexed The fork saves me time and money because if I invest in a kitchen utensil it will be for cooking :yep: smooth is good enough for me. I don't really need it fluffy. Oh yeah, another reason (main reason) why it doesn't take me long.....girl I only do about 8-10 oz at a time, lol. I already know yall are whipping up alot of it! I just whip enough to last a month or so.
