How to get EXTRA moisture during conditioning with heat

My Hairdresser while conditioning my hair under the hood dryer wrapped my hair with warm damp cloth over my plastic cap. This method really worked my hair was super soft. This method could probaly help some with not buying a moisture mist hooded dryer. Has anyone experience this or have a simlar method? :D

Its more convenient for me to wash in the shower since I do it so often, so to save time I just put a plastic cap on with conditioner and wrap my towel around it while I finish up in the shower. This works well for me, but the towel is not damp. I just turn the hot water up to make more steam and heat, and my hair does just as well this way as with a hooded dryer. Whenever I touch-up, I always do the hooded dryer, because I really like to do my protein for 15 mins w/heat and then moisture for 15 mins w/heat.

Thanks for feedback. I think I will try this when I am pressed for time. Thanks for sharing. :look:

Hi Star.
When you said damp cloth, did you mean a hand towel, or one of those thin hair cloths they use in the salon? What was the extra benefit from doing it this way? I can't figure out how the damp cloth could penetrate through the plastic cap. Also, was this with a protein treatment or deep conditioner treatment.

It also works if you just use the damp towel and just pop it in the microwave to heat it up.

Lori... it doesn't penetrate... the water in the towel produces heat when it's warmed up which helps with conditioning. Just like a heating cap. You use a towel that's big enough to wrap around your head.

So what's the purpose of the damp cloth under a hood dryer??

Normally it is protein mix with moisturizing conditioner together. Yes, it is a hand towel heated in mircorwave or just with hot water. It is then wrapped around my plastic cap securly and then I place under a hooded dryer. I was told that moisture from damp towel along with the heat helps keep the hair in plastic cap moist hair like from steam as oppose from dry heat that typically comes out of hooded dryer.

yeah, I guess that doesn't realy do anything extra... your hair is under the plastic cap. The steam can't penetrate and neither can the dry air from the dryer.... all you need is the heat.

Still, the damp towel thing is good to use if you don't have a dryer or heating cap.

It does make a difference because your hair is not getting direct dry heat. I have never tried this without a dryer. This method was suppose to transform a dry heat dryer into steam mist dryer. The damp cloth help this being wraped around the head it keeps the heat that is circulating in the dryer moist like mist or steam. :)

How would dry or moist air affect hair that is under a plastic cap?

Moisture can't get in or out because it's waterproof... therefoe, it doesn't matter

If there was no plastic cap, then I'd agree.

I have done it both ways. Wet cloth under the plastic cap and on top. Do not like under since the water can break down my conditioner. My understanding was the way the heat penentrates a wet plastic cap and dry plastic cap are suppose to be diffrent resulting in a different outcome in terms of mositure. Also, we use the thin plastic caps not a heavy shower caps

Heat (air molecules that are heated in this case) cannot pass through plastic, neither can water molecules. Plastic is air and water proff... even thin caps.

If heat could penetrate the cap, wouldn't your hair dry instead of just conditioning while staying damp?

Compare what would happen if you just sat under a dryer with no cap after you apply the conditioner to what happens when you put a plastic cap on.

I here what you are saying I do agree with science but some professionals believe in this method of condtionering. Thanks for all your input.

I like what you said about the hair not getting direct dry heat. True, the moisture may not penetrate the cap, but the heat of the dryer keeps the capped hair underneath very warm, so this may be a great alternative to direct hood drying or a heat cap.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks this what I trying to get to. That the hair under the cap response differently based on the kind of heat that is circulating.

Thanks!!! I'm gonna try this tonight. Do you think it's ok to do this every night for 10 minutes? I co-wash my hair nightly.

I would say maybe three time a week since your co-wash is another way to daily keep your hair moist also.

I do all my washes in the shower, so I can't sit under a dryer. I just put on the plastic cap, and wrap a towel around my head to trap in the body heat and finish showering. The only time I do sit under a dryer is after a touch-up...I do 15 mins of protein, and 15 mins of moisture. This allows me to sit long enough for my hair to actually become warm.

FYI: 70% of your body heat escapes through the head.

I tried it a while ago, totally forgot to post. I didn't see a really huge difference, but my hair was softer.

I was talking to my friend who is a licensed hair stylist and she told me I should do this with my pre poo hot oil treatments. She said put the wet, hot towel under the cap and it acts like a steamer when you sit under the dryer. Has anyone tried this? I will try this tonight.
