IMO, it's too long when the person can't manage their new growth any longer. Some of us here can wait a long time in between relaxer touch-ups and some of us can't. So, it basically varies from person to person.

I agree. I also think it's important for you to experiment with your new growth. Try to find products or procedures that will soften it. By doing more hot oil treatments,
deep conditioning (with plastic cap),and braid outs, I've learned that I can extend my touch up time. Some vitamins like Evening Primrose and MSM can also make your new growth softer. Good luck!!!!1
literally seeing your roots isn't a bad thing! just remember that doing so means progress!!
just remember that the first sign of progress does not mean it's time for a retouch. if you can wait longer, that's good. however, if you start experiencing breakage from waiting longer, don't wait. i think it's always best to wait at least 8 weeks since it usually takes that long to have enough new growth to prevent overlapping.
you should definitely play around with products to see if you can find some to soften the new growth and make your hair easier to manage. i have alot of luck with S-Curl or World of Curls curl activator. other people use Profective Root Health. as has been said, it all depends on the person...
