How does one grow Natural Hair this long?

@natstar, I'm thinking about going back to wearing two-stand twists instead of constant fat twistouts...too much manipulation for my coily strands. And putting my hair into three baggies will be too much manipulation and stress on my hair too. It's VERY shrinky and fine-stranded! My hair cannot fit into one bun but it can fit into two.
I'll just endure the boredom of wearing twists to retain hair length. I need to stop this manipulation immediately and leave my hair alone! Lol! I don't use many products, just the basics...shampoo, sometimes conditioner, and a moisturizer...so I'm good there.

I totally understand- Last spring that's all I did and it worked just fine for me. I did twists that lasted me the week and a twistout on the weekends. Before you know it, you will gain more length. Just don't forget to moisturize the ends of your twists once in a while. BTW- I love your summer dress!

Poohbear--everything you mentioned about low manipulation, well I'm currently doing as of this week. I was in cornrows for awhile--7 months to be exact and got bored with them...

Tiffgurl: Did you get more than usual growth with your cornrows?

I would not say that I got more than usual growth in my cornrows. The lady who braids my hair said that she thought my hair grew really fast in them, but I don't. In the past, years ago, I wore cornrows and my hair grew like wildfire, but as of late, it just seems normal to me. I'm growing out a texturizer, so I do have a lot of new growth and a lot of shrinkage, so it could be more than I'm actually accounting for. After 7 months, I basically have a full head of natural hair--I don't measure, so I'm not sure. Sorry I wasn't more accurate.

But how do you stop your coils from breaking. My hair breaks constantly. :(

As the other ladies are saying low manipulation. You also have to eat right, take vitamins, and drink lots of water and you should have no problem getting there.

Yup, less is more when growing out natural or relaxed hair. I was on the telephone with a friend of mine who is not natural and she colors. I asked her what she does b/c her hair is BSL or slightly longer.

This is her "simple" regimen:

1. She only gets her hair done at the hairdressers every 2 weeks
2. Week 1: Roller set and goes home with hair wrapped (never uses blow dryers)
3. Week 3: Touch up (she gets touch ups every 6 weeks, mild her hairdresser won't put anything stronger than a mild in her hair w/ the color)
4. Week 5: Color touch up b/c her roots grow out so fast

That is it. She doesn't wash her hair in between visits she just wraps it at night and combs it down. Right before she goes in for a service she might pull her dirty hair back in a pony tail or clip it up.

Very simple.

Sounds cool I want to participate. By 2008 I can only imagine how much hair I will have then. WOWZERS!

help!!!!!!!!I do not want to pay the big bucks for Ojon, but I would like to be able to order Palm KERNEL oil, from the nut not the fruit. Does anyone know where I can purchase this oil in CANADA?

From nature with love's website perhaps?

Yep, by Dec 2008 it is possible to gain 10" at the average of 6" per year. Now keeping all that growth is the trick.:D

Right right keeping the added inches is the trick. Well I am on the no trim challenge which sh/ be fairly easy for me at this length and point.

Avoid the pressed and white palm kernel oil. The palm kernel oil you need is the one obtained from roasted palm kernels. This oil is dark brown and is exactly the same as Ojon's. I got mine directly from Africa.
If you know any Nigerians or Ghanians, ask them to get you some of this oil from Africa. Ask them to get locally produced oil not from the market cos the market ones are sometimes adulterated.

You could get a a litre for as littel as £10.

Thanks, brandy. Oh well, I don't know anyone if Africa so I won't be getting that good deal that you get. Nor will I be spending $55 for Ojon.

Absolutely beautiful!!!!
reminds me of my hair when i was a little girl and didn't appreciate it then...

nice thread. that woman has fabulous hair. i ran to that ojon site and found myself quickly getting off that site-their stuff is very expensive. i wonder how much this woman spends monthly to wash and condition her hair. i know those tiny jars of moisturizer are not enough for all that hair!

You bring back memories. I would be in awe at someone's 'hair', ask them about their regimen (pre-LHCF) and they end up telling me it's a weave. How disappointing and embarrasing!

I remember this one woman who I used to ask about her hair and one day, I got close and this chick was wearing wigs/weaves and acting like it was her hair!! Giving me tips on 'haircare' and everything!

OFFTOPIC- I am adding you as a fotki friend :)

Compliments on your thick beautiful hair!!!

I think her hair is beautiful, but definitely not unattainable. In fact, her afro reminds me a lot of mine. Her fro is definitely quite a bit longer and fuller than mine....But check me out in the coming months....I plan on giving homegirl a run for her money (or at least neck-to-neck)!

Man her hair is gorgeous! Nice inspiration. I get so frustrated sometimes cause it seems like for the past year and a half my hair has been stuck between APL and BSL. It's discouraging but seeing this girl's hair has inspired me, I'm gonna stick with my protective/low maintenance styles and hopefully I'll reach BSL someday.

Ok so her hair had definetly inspired me! Although I have quite a ways to go (I BC'D last month).

However I have been keeping it simple for the most part. I'm going to use up the millions of shampoos and conditionersI have and anything else that works for me, that has fallen by the waist side.

I'm going to start taking my vitamins again and do better with drinking water!
