This may seem like a "duh" question but I really don't know.

I'm in the process of trying out new products, figuring out what works etc.. and I'm pretty sure I have dry hair. But I don't really know what moisturized hair would look or feel like. I guess soft to the touch but what else?

Thanks!

I think this is a good question, actually and it isn't "duh" at all. I remember I asked this question when I first started my hair journey. This one response stuck to me though (it was from another board). She said "that when you take you hair in the palm of you hands, and scrunch it together, you shouldn't hear any noises (like leaves or anything) and it shouldn't feel hard but kind of soft and cotton like. Just easy to scrunch and not feel like it should break to the touch.

I also think moisturized hair feel different to different people. I don't think however you hair should feel greasy or that after touching it, you should neccessarily have product residue on your hands. My moisturized hair (I am relaxed) feels smooth and soft. When I scrunch it, or seperate it by hand, I shouldn't hear any popping noises and it feels very soft to the touch. I can't really describe it with words, but once you know how your hair feels when it is dry, it is very easy to diagnos when it's moisturized.

To me, moisterized hair is soft. Its really soft. Not brittle or mushy or anything. Its not a wet feeling either. but feels...hmm.. firm and strong and soft, like silk!

thats the best I could come up with (that also encouraged me to put my hands in my head...I didn't need to do that:lol:

It doesn't matter which moisterizer I use (and I have a couple) or how much I use (from dime sized amount to a quarter sized amount), everytime I put moisterizer on my hair it leaves my hair looking wet. Is this normal?? I've started to only moisterize at night because of this.

Yes, this is the case with moisturizers especially if water and glycerin are on the top of the ingredient list. Thats why many people bun and/or baggie with a moisturizer. Qhemet Biologic Sidr Butter Balm is pretty good at moisturizing and not giving that wet looking. But water IS the the best moisturizer. MOISTURizer = moisture=water.:D

And yes, if you comb through your hair and your hear snap, crackle, pop (kinda like velcro being detached:() your hair is dry. Put in a moisturizer, then listen for velcro.

If no sound, you know you are in the M-zone (moisture zone):)

This is a great explanation.

This is the BEST stuff!
I  Sidr Tree Butter Balm!
I'm going to stock up so I NEVER run out!

Thank you ladies for your excellent replies, your descriptions helped me tremendously. :)

i also know when my hair is moisturized because it gives a sheen to it. when it is dry my hair looks dull but when it is moisturized it is a deep black with sheen. also it is soft and feels nice to the touch.

Thanks!

I need to find a good daily moisturizer. I want to try mango butter but I have no idea where to buy it.
I don't think ORS Olive Oil or Profectiv is working for me.

Moisturized hair is not soaking wet hair. It is hair that has a healthy sheen and when you touch it it is soft to the touch like silk. As the other ladies mention, you should not hear noise when you touch or comb the hair.

and so i was mixing a batch of cookies yesterday and as i was measuring the brown sugar i couldn't help but feel how moist it is when you mash it down in the measuring cup.

a freshly opened bag of brown sugar is MOIST and it actually feels sensual to my fingertips - i'm weird yes.

but now i realize that's how exactly how my hair feels in my braid outs and why i just can't keep my hands out of it - especially the new growth.

it feels sensual and moist - like smushing that brown sugar in the measuring cup yesterday.

.....and i'm gonna hurray up and push the >post reply> button before i loose my nerve associating food with hair LOL

As a natural, my hair feels very soft to the touch. No residue will come off in my hands (no sheen, oil, no product) just very soft touchable hair. I use no product that has "cones" they are very hard for me to get out, and they leave my hair hard as a rock! I do frequent conditioner only washes, and shampoo 2-3 times per month using a mild soap like oyin shampoo bar or dr bronners peppermint, lavander or almond. I do have neutrogena clarifying shampoo that I do once a month, and follow that up w/ a dc tx. I do use leave in's such as: giovanni direct, mixed w/ a castor oil/suave conditioner mix. I keep on top of doing my dc tx twice per month. I also have a leave-in spray that is spring or filtered water, conditioner, castor oil, essential oils, and some other stuff. I have a filter on my shower (which has helped so much) for the hard water issue that we have in my city in NE ohio. I cover up my hair when it's below 40 degrees out, and in my hats I have sewn satin linings. I think that it's a combo of lots of stuff that gets it for me. I take flax oil, 1 multi-vitamin, 2 msm w/ vitamin c daily. I drink plenty of water and try to eat well. Good luck to you!

That was actually a GREAT explanation!!!! I use brown sugar in place of white sugar when needed for my food recipes. :yep:

Mango Butter is really good, I use it every other day and it keeps my hair soooo moisterized and soft without making it look wet. I just wish it came in a bigger container! I found it at a BSS, i've never seen it in walmart, target etc

I LOVE brown sugar. Whenever I make my meat sauce for my lasagna, I always add a little brown sugar to the mix and it makes it soooooooooooo delicious!

Soft and cotton-y is a good description of what my hair feels like when it's moisturized. It doesn't really shine, but has a nice sheen.

Some of the best moisturizers I've come across:

Cantu Grow Strong
Profectiv(purple one)
BB Castor Oil Moisturizer
NTM Leave In

Now these will leave your hair a bit wet, but I wear buns/ponytails 99% of the time so it doesn't matter for me.

For moisturizing when I wear my hair down, I like Elasta QP Recovery.

This is a good point because I am actually struggling with this myself. My hair right now is shiny. Every day this week I have been putting Elasta QP Mango Butter and sealing with Africa's Best Castor Oil because I thought whenever you use moisturerizer you should seal with an oil. But my hair feels and looks greasy and when I scrunch I can still hear the "Scrunch" sound. I even saw broken pieces when I applied the Mango Butter. Could this be the products or am I that moisturizer illiterate (if that made sense)?
