Can natural hair look moisturized?

I may not always be right, but I'm never wrong.
My stylist keeps saying that my hair will never look moisturized b/c I have natural hair. It does not matter how much moisturizer I use it will still look dry. Is that true?

That is not true. My hair looks different when it is dry versus being moisturized. It doesn't shine alot but it has a nice sheen to it and it feels soft.

It won't look like straightened moisturized hair, but I can definately see and feel the difference between my well moisturized hair and when it suffers from a lack of moisture. Big difference.

I agree with Ms. Lala. My mom, who is fully natural, hair usually looks dry. But if I put moisturizer on one side and not the other, you could definitely tell which side was which.

Yet another stylist who has no clue what she's talking about. I've seen plenty of natural heads of hair that didn't look dry at all.

Your hair looks pretty moisturized to me in your pics, btw.

I don't think this is true, but just from my experience, my relaxed hair did hold moisture in longer than my natural hair, but then again, I haven't changed my products that much either.

I've never heard that one before. I think if you seal your hair with oil as a natural the moisture isn't gonna escape. Your hair can definitely be dry and relaxed. She's probably just trying to convince you to get a perm. Stick to your convictions. If natural is what's best for your hair, never change.

I hope you're willing to look for a new stylist because it sounds like she doesn't know much about hair.

But yes, natural hair can look very moisterised.

You can lock in moisture in natural hair and it will retain shine. All you have to do is add oil such as Optimum Oil Therapy Shine Booster right after you wash, condition and moisturize. If you had the oil while the hair is still wet it really does seal in moisture for days.

Try it and you will see for yourself. :) I have gone three days to almost a week without washing or adding more oil.

I get what your stylist is saying. And it's true to a certain degree. Like the other ladies have stated, natural hair thats moisturized isn't going to look like relaxed moisturized hair. But your hair looks plenty moisturized in your pics. What are you using? I wish mines looked shiny like that.

I think the only reason relaxed hair holds more moisture is because it's more porous.

I have seen natural hair that is moisturized. Yours even look moisturized in your pic. But along the lines of what RelaxerRehab said relaxed moisturized hair looks very different from natural moisturized hair. Most natural moist hair isn't shiny-if that's what you look for in moist hair. It's more of a sheen.

Your stylist doesn't have a clue! Take a picture now. Then give yourself an at-home DC and put your moisturizer in right after. Take a picture now. Line 'em up and see the difference for yourself.

Maybe you need a new stylist. Now I'm mad....

Yep, that's exactly what I was going to say.

honestly, i think she told you this because she wants you to get a relaxer since that would mean more potential income for her. sadly this is quite common.
but to answer your question, yes, natural hair can look moisturized. Your pictures alone attest to that. For myself, a bit of s-curl and some olive oil makes revives my dry twists in no time. My wet buns are also really shiny and soft. And my pressed hair is really shiny. So yeah, she's hustling.

So what are you guys doing to get that 'moisturized look.' It seems like no matter what I do to my hair it will always look dry. It looks nice and shiny and moisturized initially, but later it seems to look all dried out really quickly. I moisturize and seal w/ oil and still this happens.

Well, does your hair just look dry or does it actually feel dry, too? Sometimes looks can be deceiving.

At least twice a day, I use the Garnier Fructis Length & Strength Fortifying Cream Conditioner as a moisturizer, put their Anti-Split Ends treatment on my ends...and as of yesterday, I tried Nexxus Phyto Organics Humectin as a leave-in moisturizer and then sealed with Amla Lite oil, and that gave me great results, too.

Also, if your hair feels dry, it could be what you're moisturizing with. Maybe you need a "heavier" moisturizer, in the sense not that it weighs your hair down, but it has more moisture enhancing properties.

I put my ORS olive oil moisturizer on my hair while in the shower. Then, I wrap my head with a microfiber towel to blot up the excess moisture. Then after about 5-10 minutes I take the towel off, rub some avocado oil in my hands, and pat my hair with my oily hands. i scrunch my ends with oily hands too. my hair stays soft and moist all day.:)

Yea I think that it right there ^ (the bolded). It does feels dry, not only look dry. I've been using the Africas Best Kids Shea Butter Detangling Moisture Lotion that a lot of naturals rave about, but its really not doing much for me. Its really thin and runny and I dont think its moisturizing my hair well at all. Off to find something heavier. Thanks!!!

Yeah right! :smirk:

Both natural hair AND relaxed hair can look MOISTURIZED!

Both natural hair AND relaxed hair can look DRY!

So it goes BOTH ways. Your stylist does not know what she's talking about!

P.S. Michiko, your natural hair looks moisturized to me. Don't let her fool you.

I think our eyes have to be retrained about what "moisturized" LOOKS like.

I agree with this.

I think people equate moisture with shine and unless there is camera flash involved, my hair does not shine.

Well, that explains it right there! :D Sounds like she's just trying to make some $$$$$$.... ...let it go out the other ear!

The Kid's Shea stuff is the same way for me. I'm looking for something heavier too.
