I am in Boston for work this week, and I came with my nice little bottle of nexxus botanoil. ummm my hair was not ready for this cold weather up here, my hair is so dry and brittle now. this is really making me nervous since I am already have this bald spot. when i get back to atl i am giving myself a serious moisture treatment, and when I come back up here for work I am bringing good old grease and doing some type of protective style......

My hair was dry before coming to this board because I wasn't taking care of it. Since joining I've starting using S-Curl on my braids to keep them moisturized. In between braid styles I'm using Cathy Howse's creme moisturizer, EVOO and other essential oils. Either way I moisturize about three times a day (or more). When I get up, after work, and before I go to bed. My hair is use to the colder weather here so when the season changed it wasn't as big of a shock as it would be for your hair.

yes girl, the winters are brutal. my hair always grew from march-august but would break off in october. now, i keep winter hair strong with moisturizing poo, moisturizing conditioner, and moisture, moisture every day. the biggest culprit is the indoor heating, it's like being under a hair dryer all day.

I agree with bajanplums1. I haven't been up North in over 7 years, but you don't forget that cold once you come back. I stay in protective styles up here. I also moisturize a lot more than I did when I lived down South. You have to do that.

That's pretty much what you need to do. Also, protective styling helps ALOT :) If you're interested, try finding/using moisturizing shampoos and conditioners if you don't already...

I guess I'm the only one--I don't think I ever noticed an adverse effect on my hair from the cold. Jaibee, Atlanta has your hair all spoiled :D...you do know you missed 70 degree weather :look: ? *runs*

Same here dreemssold. I live right off Lake Erie. Winters are brutal, but my hair has never suffered...Deep conditioning & protective styling are my weapons

Guuuurl, it ain't easy here in NY! :) CandiceC has the key - moisture, moisture, and more moisture. I go overboard with moisture, especially since my hair is underprocessed and likely prone to dryness. I use all kinda stuff - ORS Olive Oil, CD Hair Milk, NTM Healing Shine Serum (which is a really great moisturizer, not oily like a typical serum!):) You just have to be prepared to go the extra mile to protect the tresses!

Well I am a boston girl and I make sure to keep up with my moisturizing deep conditioner for 40 min each week with heat. The hardest thing I find around this time is finding a nice winter hat that is not going to cause breakage. So far the chenile ones are doing the trick.

I live outside of Boston and when the cold sets in I commit to protective styles. I almost never wear my hair out when the weather changes. I deep condition EVERY week and use a heavy hand with moisture. I moisturize twice a day except when doing the baggie method then once a day is sufficient. I also keep my humidifier going when I'm at home. That helps my skin and hair.

hmmm thanks for the tips ladies. last night I put a TON of the botanoil on my hair and wrapped my hair with my satin scarf. this morning i put a little more on and put a shower cap on and jumped in the shower. Now if I would have done this down south, my hair would be so greasy, but now it is moisturized nicely. I will know next time!

I was in Boston for a wedding and I moisturized my hair once a day with Verifen Complex Oil for the Hair. At home, I do a pre-shampoo with EVOO at least once a week. I saturate my hair with the oil and sit under my bonnet dryer for at least an hour. I'm doing it right now. But this time I have both EVOO and Vatika on my hair. I've never tried both at once so I'll see how it turned out in two hours.

Although I was born and raised in NY, I spent 17 years between Alabama and Tennessee before moving here in spring 2003. Last winter my hair and skin suffered so much becuase of the cold, dry winter. Ya'll, Minnesota is NO joke! Anyway, this winter I am wearing my hair in protective styles, mainly a bun or tucked under single twist. I do the baggie method at night after conditioner washing and saturating my hair, especially my ends, with oils. In the morning I take baggie off and add a little castor oil and tuck my hair away. THis has helped a lot. I only wear my hair out for church and then as soon as I get home, I re-moisturize and cover it.

The cold is brutal so I am wearing wigs. I Surge twice a day and use Elasta Oil Moisture. I have my hair in one or two small/low ponytails with baggies on my ends under the wig. That way I can wear a hat w/o worrying about breakage. Also somedays the wig is all the hat I need. Also I like to CO wash after work every two days, and let it airdry. Then I Surge it, WGO my ends and bag it up.

Like all the ladies said, tons of moisture is the key. When the temp starts dropping, I ALWAYS keep my hair covered. The thing that has helped me a lot is taking one of those cheap satin scarves from the beauty supply and attaching it to the inside of my wool cap. That way I don't have to worry about my hair getting messed up or the wool sucking all the moisture out of it. Deep conditioning and daily moisture with heavier products help me out a lot.

What products work well for daily moisture without weight on the hair? I just got a terrible color and dont know where to begin. The past years work down the drain.

I actually like my hair better in the winter and it grows quicker. I like it better because I find the sun fries the top a little. Pretty much like I have used heat on it....well...lol. I moisturize it the same way all year but the summer time is harder on *my* hair. I use scurl texturizer spray mixed with unbraid spray 3x/week and I oil with WGO 3x/week. I surge 2x/day. I wash every 7-14 days....that's it. Pretty simple regimen.
Btw, I'm in Alberta Canada...gets colder here than in Boston...lol. Sometimes gets as low as -31 to -35F.

Co-signing on sewing a silk scarf into a wool cap. I use a beret, so I can always have a classic, elegant look going on. I shake my hand as I see all of these sisters walking around with their heads uncovered. Not only can it give you a cold, it can also be deadly for your hair!

Also co-signing on posts about moisture. My hair is moisturized twice a day, I oil my scalp when needed with light oils, like tea tree and jojoba and I give myself hot oil treatments once if not twice a week and deep condition after every shampoo. If I condition with a protein conditioner, I STILL follow it up with a moisturizing conditioner.

Sorry, meant to say, shake my head, LOL! Also, I either use the baggie method or bun when my hair is not in the beret. I am looking for other protective styles that are easy to do and will protect my ends.

I'm sorry to hear that. You can nurse your hair back to health though, you'll find a lot of good info here. :) I usually use coconut oil mixed with a little moisturizer or Carefree curl on my hair. I'm transitioning though and when I was relaxed, those would have been too heavy on my hair. When I was relaxed, I actually used to use shea butter and a teeny bit of Hair Mayonnaise on my hair to keep it moist.

I moved to Minnesota from Alabama so I can definitely relate. A few things have worked for me:

1 - Moisturizing at least DAILY
2 - Wearing protective styles, especially when wearing sweaters or other material that can catch the hair and break it
3 - Always covering the hair when outside; the wind can be brutal to uncovered hair

Hope this helps!
