How do you trim split ends?

I have tried to search and I have not found any info.

I need a trim, but I really haven't found a stylist I trust just yet.

I was think about getting layers, but now I just want to let it grow and maybe get some long layers on the top when I reach MBL next year.

First of all I'm confused on what's actually split ends on my hair.

I'm natural so I have to straigten to see what my ends look like and when I do they look a little frizzy and dry, but they straighten ok.

I just don't want to cut my hair off thinking their split and they may just be dry.

So can anyone give me guidance on how to self trim and exactly what should my split ends look like?

Personally, I think you should go to a professional. I would recommend a place like Fantastic Sams or Supercuts that specialize in cutting hair per the individual's request. Let them know that you are growing your hair and you only want it cleaned up (for me, that equals about a half an inch).

I used to "trim" my hair myself. I would just have my sister cut it straight across (about a half an inch). That means the I was missing a lot of hairs when I "trimmed" my hair. I started going to Fantastic Sams a year ago. They do a way better job than my sister ever did.

Also, want to add that if you are in college, it costs about $13. I go there after I've flat ironed my hair so they are literally just trimming it.

Your hair is long enough to do Search & Destroys on, which is basically going through sections of your hair, strand by strand (sitting in front of the computer is a great time to do it - the screen is the perfect background) and trimming off the splits.

It also helps you keep more length, because you are only cutting the strands with 'issues'.

This is what a split looks like:

If you cut right above the split (please use scissors that are made to cut hair and are only used to cut hair - otherwise you'll cut the hair bluntly, and encourage more splits to show up), you should be good.

Ok so this is what I'm looking for, thanks girl. Honestly the last time I flat ironed my hair I had more little knots than splits so I trimmed a about 1/2 an inch. When I look at my ends now they just look really frizzy & dry so maybe I should just trim a little and just dust for the next few months and when I decide to start wearing it out (I keep it braided under my wig 99% of the time) get a professional trim.

I wonder if other naturals are mistaken dry & frizzy hair for splits ends. I just may need to up my deep conditions and coat my ends more often.

I was thinking about going to a professional, but until I can find one I trust I may just have to self-trim for now.

I was JUST wondering this. do you have to flat iron your hair in order to have your ends clipped? or would a blow dry do it? Because Im co washing and stressing and I would rather use as little heat as possible
