Okay, I know the topic is confusing

but here's my question. I've had layers for Y-E-A-R-S but when I get my ends trimmed I only trim the ends because I am trying to grow out the layers. Upon inspection, I've noticed that my shortest layers (neck length) have split ends (i have 3 rows of layers). Should I leave them be and continue to grow out the style and contine trimming my ends only OR should I have my hair re-cut in layered style... again... which I really don't want to do OR should I just have them snip the split end portion of the layers which will take 4ever. Bottom line, I don't want them to overcut my hair whilst trying to give me layers ... again (did i mention again again?

). I am trying to grow my hair to a certain length and so far so good (aside from those darn split ended layers

hmmmm that's a good question..i have no idea how ladies get rid of their layers or how they grow them out. if you have split ends i would definitely get them cut off, cause if you leave them then they will travel up your hair shaft and your whole hair will be split. but then on the other hand you do want one lenght, correct? i would ask a stylist. or maybe somebody here might be more help than me...sorry girl.

CH,
I have the same problem. I'm trying to grow out my layers too, so my stylist is only trimming the bottom. When I go through my hair while setting it or doing a twistout, I hate the way the ends look on the shorter layers. I clip them myself. I just cant stand straggly looking ends!! Maybe this means it will take longer for the layers to grow out, but at least my hair won't be all split when it finally DOES grow to all one length. If you don't at least clip them, I think you'll need a MAJOR trim once the hair is all even.

What I would do is trim the bottom most layer about 1/2 inch for each trim and for the other layers only trim about 1/4 inch. Whatever length you choose to trim, I would still make sure to trim all of the layers...just less trimming with the shorter layers. This way, it will eventually catch up and not too long b/c you're getting the bottom trimmed more than the upper. If you don't trim the upper, it may never catch up b/c it will keep breaking off.

yes sweetie, you have to trim those layers too , or it will only keep breaking up the shaft..i know it seems defeating to get those layers to one legnth by trimming them..but its not, its keeping them healthy to get to grow to the legnth of the rest of your hair....i went through this while transitioning.

I'm trying to grow out my layers too but I'm not going to get it layered again. My shortest row of layers is always kinda frizzy but I just ignore it because I want to grow my hair out.

I had layers years back and trying to grow them out was a CHORE. I was able to keep my length by having my longest part trimmed, but dusting the remaining growth myself. I pulled my hair up, like when rolling it and just chipped the ends off. It took a while to get the layers out, but it worked.

I also had to grow out layers from latest short-cut disaster. Since my hair was already short, I kept having my hair cut to the nape of my neck until I got the perfectly even bob that I sought. Then I started growing out the length. It’s only grazing my collarbone, but I don’t think that’s bad for 1.5 years of growth.

When I had my hair cut in reallllllllll short layers for a modified halle cut, when I decided to grow it out, I only had the ends trimmed for the most part and got the ends of each layer trimmed very sporatically, until my hair grew out long enough to recut which helped remove the split ends...does that make sense??
