How do you maintain a braidout/twistout?

I usually get somewhat unruly 2nd day hair, but day 3 or 4 is usually ponytail or bun. Back in the day, I did braidouts sometimes every two days, sometimes daily, simply because I couldn't maintain the style. How do you get decent-looking 2nd day hair and beyond?

Oh, thanky thanky! I was trawling youtube and not really finding much.

ETA: Ohhh...I never knew the pineapple technique was what I did to my relaxed hair to keep a style..innnteresting. I tried it before, BUT, was using a ponytail holder which pulled the hair straight. Need a bigger band like a headband!
