Twistout(braidout). How do you \'fine\' hair ladies

get you hair to look full? Mine always looks thin no matter what I try. I love the look on others...but my hair is so fine and it always looks straggly. How do you get your twistouts to look full? Should I start with dry hair instead of wet? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Hi Sweetcoca

I start with slightly damp hair w/leave in's, braid in individual braids, roll the ends with sponge rollers and end papers, then finger comb afterwards. That is what gives me my fullness.

Sweetcocoa,
I understand what you mean a bit about the fullness. I find that when I do brid outs on dry hair my hair appears alot fuller. Braidouts were not really a style I was aiming for but these days I part my hair down the center and make two long plaits one on each side. Unsually I do this at night after rinsing or doing a conditioning wash. Recently I was lazy and did the briads on dry hair with a shea butter mix and I was amazed by how much fuller the hair appeared. I also thought that the braid pattern was more stretched out and it gave me a look of big full curls.

I hope that helps

Thanks ladies...I'm going to try both techniques or a combo of both and see how that works. I think starting with soak and wet hair doesn't work for me in this case.

When I used soaking/wet hair it didn't dry overnight and was wet, stringy and flat in the morning. If I shampoo, put my leave in's on, let air dry until slightly damp, braid, and then roll the ends - I get a fluffier look in the morning. Use your fingers to add fullness when you finger comb. Good luck.

Hello Sweetcocoa:

First let me say that like you I have always had thin and long hair, however when I wash and rollerset I can give any 4b a run for their money, example if I wash on Sunday - by Tuesday my natural oils start to appear from my hair shaft, and start to weigh my hair down.

I have come to understand the wash 2x wk, and don't use heavy shampoos and conditioners of any type. Also when rollersetting streach your hair out and roll from the sky

towards your scalp, not too tight.

Also check your diet (sugars) are a big problem when it comes to the body; everything is effected.

Take care,

Hello Sweetcocoa!
With my braid outs, my hair looks a lot thicker when my hair is fully dry. Sometimes I'll unbraid my hair and let it airdry. Some people also let their hair dry fully before they unbraid it. I've also noticed that finger combing or combing my waves makes my hair look a lot thicker, and usually, my wave pattern doesn't comb out. Good luck, and I've seen your pictures with your hair wavy. Your hair does look very thick.

Sweetcocoa, my hair is thin and fine also but I've had success with full-looking twistouts by starting with less twists so I get bigger waves instead of tiny ones. And when I undo them, I fluff my hair a lot or for more fullness, I spray on some S-curl, put some hair polish in the palms of my hands and then scrunch it. It adds a lot of fullness without taking out the waves.

I never thought about scrunching it once I undid the twists...I'll have to try that since it works if I had curls.... thanks. I am determined to get a good twistout. You ladies are a great help...

Re: Twistout(braidout). How do you \'fine\' hair ladies

I used to have my braid out down to a science..but lately i've ended up wih a big mess!

My hair now dries in a big poof with less curl definition, whereas i would like poof AND twist/curl. Fingercombing definetly helps.. try styling it with plain olive oil to add sheen and control while fingercombing to fluff.
