How do you know when it is time to clarify?

I usually do it once a month but if my hair is looking dull and I have been using a lot of products (or have product buildup), I will clarify sooner.

I just do it, especially when I have put heavy products on my hair.

While we are on the subject, what is the best clarifiyer that you ladies have used?

I'd like to know too... I heard that lemon juice is a good clarifiyer or even baking soda.

My hair is dull and my conditiones lose their slip. I normally use ACV. I have this indian shampoo that has neem in it tho that is good for removing build up. I also have some clarifying shampoos but I havent used them much since discovering ACV rinses.

I alternate between ACV rinses and a mild clarifiying shampoo such as Aloe Rid by Nexxus. I clarify a couple of times a month, just before using my hair steamer.

I just felt that it was "safer" to do it regularly.
I didn't want to lose any benefits that I gained when the build up backfires... :p

For me, I know it's time to clarify when...

  • there are flakes (or noticable dried hair products) laying on the surface of my hair or scalp
  • I have excessive itching
  • there is white film on my scalp or hair immediately after a shampoo
