He ladies, Ive just recently got back into seriously taking care of my hair and trying to catch up to where my hair used to be ( below BSL) now im apl stretched. I forgot how frumpy I look when im just wearing my hair up in a clip all the time. Also since i dont have the length I used to my up do's or buns are looking off and I feel like i look like my granny.:look: Is that mean? oh well....anyways how do you all combat the THE FRUMP? lol

ANUBIS,
Uh-uh, that's not mean. I am somebody's grandmother and I don't do 'granny':giggle:. I was doing me before and Imma keep doin me. To avoid the frumpy look/ frumpy slump that can sometimes come from PSing I am a firm believer in all accessories. Seriously, hair toys coordinated with the right amount of other accessories and outfits/ colors/ patterns/ placement the whole nine can make all the difference. You gotta be creative and if you aren't by nature, spend some time with google images. Take an look you like and customize it to make it your own!

why not wear your hair down?, your practicing good hair habits now ,so you should be able to grow your hair and wear any style you want as long your extra gentle with it. Im always looking for new syles so i dont get bored during my stretches, if you get creative you wont feel so frumpy.

ANUBIS To give your bun that oomph you're missing, why not add on hair until you get there? Did you see this thread?

Also finding cute phony pony buns or phony ponies can make you fake till you make it. Your hair stays protected but you can let that thang swang and rub on your clothes all it wants till you have hair at that length. And you can cut it some to make it realistic if you find it's too long. Adrienne got to waist length doing that. She shows you how she pulled it off here: http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/1283174

Napp and howyoudoin If she's trying to get back to the length she had with a quickness, wearing her hair down isn't exactly the way to get there. I think she needs ideas to feel beautiful while protective styling. Falls and ponies can fake the "hair down" look without thwarting her progress, I feel.

Nonie i feel that if you pay attention to your ends and its moisture needs you can grow your hair without constant protective styles.it might take longer or it might not but at least i dont feel like a frump.

I agree with the phony ponies and half wigs. That's what I'm doing for the rest of the year and possibly until I'm mbl so that I can retain ALL of my length. Cute head bands and flowers also dress up buns and don't forget cute earrings and a little eye makeup/lip gloss.

I dunno, I gues I'm in the minority who think buns are cute. I wear a high bun, makeup and pearl earrings almost every day and I definitely don't feel frumpy.

Napp Exactly @ the bold. That's why I said, if OP is trying to get back to where she was more comfortable with a quickness, then protective styling is the way to do it.

And as I showed in one of the links, she can still wear her hair up in a PS and have a phony pony hanging down. IIRC, a few folks on the forum used to wear falls so it'd look like their hair was hanging down but it was protected.

ok.i just wanted to put it out there as an option.some people can retain fine without ps but never know they can because they dont give it a chance... No one has to agree with my opinion or take my advice.

I feel like your accessories or clothes will make you look like a frump before a bun will.

I wear buns a lot and just either dress them up with accessories, if I feel like it, or try different updos.

I DO understand where you are going with that, but I will say that I have seen lots of people wear their hair down and wonder why they aren't retaining....only to put it away or put it up and get over that "hump" they were experiencing. I am one of those people -- wet and dry bunning helped me shoot from APL to BSL and then from there to MBL.

I'd be willing to bet (ok, maybe not bet actual money :look:) that more people experience THAT scenario than people who can retain effortlessly no matter what their hairstyle. But of course there are those people who can wear their hair down everyday and get from SL to BSL in a year or two. It would be foolish to say that NO ONE in the history of black hair care has been able to do that.

My solution was to wear my hair out more often and leave buns for bad hair days

When I was relaxed--this definitely worked. Now that I'm transitioning...I mean...I'm just sayin...dang. I was hoping to find some answers here! I'm gonna get me some toys!

Thats true too. fake hair is an option if she doesnt mind wearing it , but i dont think it makes a huge difference in your progress if let your hair down once a week. My ends stay intact whether i tuck all my hair away in a bun everyday or do other styles. For me, length retention is achieved by moisture and proper detangling and not putting too much tension on the hair.

Agreed on the fake hair route if that's your thing.

It's not my thing and I avoided feeling blah by jazzing up my updos with cute headbands or a hair flower. Also playing with volume up top/front since it's "trendy" and wont be seen as grannysih, even if it's just a hump and a bun.

Also alternate your bunning with twist or braid outs or wash n gos. Hair out once in a while will not give you a setback.

Last thing, what about jazzing up your outfits, jewelry, makeup instead of hair?

you feel frumpy and you're APL stretched?:ohwell:
hmmm i dunno about that.....i am maybe 1 1/2 - 2 inches from APL....
i just try different styles....of course if you're doing the same ol' style everyday you're gonna get tired of it and feel "frumpy"....do you have any pics of your hair?
you could try doing braid outs....twist outs....buns...(not the traditional buns) you should invest in some good hair day pins and try different ways to pin your hair up....
also get a banana clip...that's a fun way to spice up your hair life....
just try different things.....

i've attached some pics of some of the styles i do

from left to right

pic 1... just a bun that i did on washed hair. just added a bouffant (or wahtever you call it)
Pic 2. a two strand flat twist out on lightly flat ironed hair....
Pic 3 an old two strand flat twist out that i just threw in a pony-puff with a bouffant... (I LOVEEEE BOUFFANTS) lol
Pic 4.... two strand flat twist out that i put in a pony and the front out...
Pic 5 & 6 crazy crazy updo i did.....two strand flat twist out put in a HUGE bouffant and pinned up the back....

sorry i don't have any pictures of the back....

Oh, also, there's an updo thread somewhere with style ideas....i'll try to find it and bump for ya

yes! yes! yes!!! :yep:

Not sure if you are natural or relaxed but there is a natural hair bun thread with very cute styles and then the everyday hair thread is helpful. Sorry no links, I am on my phone. But you should be able to find them in a search.

I love a high bun and have worn a bun for the last few months, even those close to me are sick of it! Lol
But its stylish! :)

I echo what was previously said: accessorizing with hair candy really helps you get over the PSing slump.

I don't feel frumpy when my hair is in an updo or bun(I put my phony ponytail over it). I always wear a nice headband or flower in my hair. I am almost completely natural and I love how my hair looks in a side afro puff. Maybe you are just not into your hair at this time. So just dress up your bun or wear some nice jewelry or clothes. That always makes me feel better.

Napp Agreed. If you take care of your hair properly you'll grow and retain just fine without ps. Maybe you can wear your hair out a few days and bun a few days so you won't feel so frumpy.
