With a leave-in conditioner along with an oil as my moisturizer. Silk scarf at bed time and during the drying process to keep those ends down.

Have you tried wearing two buns in your hair, one one top of the other? That would help protect most of your ends.
I used to put my hair buns by using a donut technique and putting a scrunchie around it, if that makes any sense. My ends were still protected.

I have layers. I think it's easier to do a wet/damp bun so you can lay down all the peices. Also if you use a light oil, that helps smooth things as well.

Or wear braids until your hair gets all one length. Its easier to slick your hair back when its wet with a touch of gel.
