How Can I Get Full Looking Mini-small Twists?

So I want to rock mini/small twists for the next few weeks. But I want them to look plump and full after day 1. This is what my twists usually look like, but I want something fuller and plumper and neater. I know my twisting skills leave a lot to be desired too. Should I twist on blow dried hair for fullness? Or really stretched out hair?

Hmm. I usually twist on super wet hair for max shrinkage. The more my twists shrink, the plumpler they look.

My hair only looks super plump in large to medium sized twists, but those are too large to be a hairstyle without looking like Coolio. In mini twists or small twists, they just look skimpy like I don't have hair a thick hair density. So to remedy that I have to do even smaller mini twists (like micro size) to create more volume.

But to get fuller than your pics, I can only think of adding extensions. Or try micro twisting to get more volume in the number of twists.

Thanks ladies!!!! The consensus seems to point to soaking wet hair. This makes perfect sense. Off to try it as soon as soon as I could peel myself out of bed!!!

I'm going to be different and say do it on damp hair not wet. I find that when I twist in the shower I tend to twist tighter and they stay elongated. If I twists on towel dried hair (60% wet?) Then I tend to part my hair according to how fluffy I want the twist and then twist not too tightly -- tight but not too tight.

I'm fine to med strands and density.

@charmtreese your twists always look amazing!

I don't have fine hair, I think my twisting skills/methods are terrible. So I tried everything and it worked. I made chuncky twists on soaking wet hair and allowed it to shrink up. I slept in a loc soc under a durag :lachen:in the morning, I didn't shower with my hair in a bun and let it soak up all the moisture. I embraced my shrinkage. (My shrinkage is real y'all, from waist length to shoulder length :cry3:) I got a lot of compliments today, even the hubs noticed. The pic where I'm in the car is from about an hour after I did the twit's

Wow! I see the difference! Gorgeous!

I have fine MBL hair and my twists are a sorry mess :-( I can't get it right so I don't wear my hair out in twists. I'll spend 2 hours twisting my hair at night only to undo them the next day for a twistout. And all that time and effort twisting my hair is not worth it because I don't get multiday use out of twistouts.. This is why I usually wear wash n goes. If I could wears twists then my hair would have a lot less breakage.

Have you tried styling the twists and wearing those? Like twist then put it into a bun or flat twisting the twists into an updo? That's usually how I'll salvage a second week twisted style once they start becoming frizzy.

@bhndbrwneyes
I had the same problem last week but I was too stubborn to take them out so I wore buns and updos and it looked decent. You should try it on soaking wet hair. It worked for me! I can't wait to try again next week with different sized twists.

What products are you using to twist? I've found that twisting on wet hair with the LCO method works best for my hair type (4a/4b high porosity) instead of using a butter type product. I wear mini twists and medium twists as a protective style 70% of the time.

My only problem is that I have to be careful being too heavy handed with products so that my hair doesn't turn out greasy.

Here is a mini twist out pic

I used oils, sometimes butters, whatever I pull out. My hair rarely gets weighed down when curly.
Your hair is so oo lush. Whats your length?

Ok maybe try twisting with a cream or moisturizer on wet hair and see how that works for you :grinwink:

Awww Thanks! I'm at bra strap length the last time I straightened earlier this year.

Twisting in the opposite direction than you feel comfortable can also produce fuller twists. Also spacing your twists so that the top rows hide the parts on the lower rows makes the twists look fuller.

The good news is that fall and winter are the best times to experiment with twisting techniques. Hats and/or scarves make thin twists less noticeable. I love seeing the contrast between the texture of a knit hat and twists on natural hair.
