High School Styles

For those of you who are out of high school (or still in), what were some of the hot styles that you saw around school? How did you wear your hair? How did you "want" to wear your hair? What style are you almost ashamed to admit you wore or wanted?

I'll go first:
Hot styles in my high school were chin length or shoulder length bobs - really fluffy ones or stacked ones and short feather going to the back all the way or half-way.
I wore the short on top feather hairdo with long hair in the back for at least 2 years of high school. If I didn't do that, I wore a ponytail.
I always wanted an asymetrical bob.

I am ashamed to admit that one time I didn't wash my hair for about 2 months and slicked it back every day with that icky brown precon gel with a bun covered by a nylon. (DON'T TELL ANYONE!)

One side short and stacked and the other side long. Whoever came up with that one should be

Finger waves were another one...

Omy...I remember that one. Heck, I had that one! LOL

I am ashamed to admit that I wore finger waves in the front with something that I can't remember on top of it and a gelled up french roll in the back. But hey what can I say I was in Baltimore?

How could we forget the french rolls - WITH accessories. How 'bout the glued in rhinestones on special occasions for starters?

Oh yeah, I wasn't in high school when the stacked look was out, but when I was in high school, the Jade look was just starting to die out. Everybody loved to style their hair with TONS of Gel (black, white, and spanish) and wear their hair high up in a bun with spiral tendrils.

The Janet Jackson dookie braids.
The regular old bob cut
The boomerang haircut (towards 96-97)

Me, I wore the donut bun with a side bang. I was still boring back then until I got a necklength bob. When I got the bob(1996), I would wear my hair like that, and I kept wearing my hair like that until it grew out.

The style I wore that I thought was so hot but wouldn't be caught dead wearing: The half roll where the hair was out in the back, but the top was rolled, and I had pin curls in the middle...what was I thinking? Well that look helped me snag a boyfriend at the time.

Fingerwaves going back and lifted and the back was out with the ends bumped
Anything w/tracks
French rolls
OOOOH! Three big curls, like your hair in a ponytail but then the ponytail divided into three big ol' loop/curl looking things

We hadn't quite discoved soft hair at that time

How old are you guys? In high school, it was all about the infamous wrap. Almost all the girls in my school looked identical with the same shoulder length wrap. People RARELY wore their hair differently.

the high "fan" ponytail
short and stacked in the top with the long tail in the back
pineapple waves and finger waves
ponytail slicked back with lots of brown precon gel *yuck*
sheneneh braids (like the character from martin)

My favorite high school style was the high ponytail with the bangs in eyebrow length bangs in the front, think Left-eye from TLC the FIRST Album! lol

It is not an age thing per se but an geographic thing as well. I went ot high schoool in Baltimore and they at the time wore fingerwaves, pincurls and the waterfalls etc. Now my friends in New york wrapped their hair. If you wore a wrap in baltimore it was because you were too poor to get anything else.

Most of the styles that you all are talking about are middle school styles for me. The high fan ponytail, dookie braids, french rolls with rhinestones, pin curls. I personally loved the lifted fingerwave box with the bumped under curls in the back. I rocked that all the way through 7th straight on into 8th grade but my stylist was easy on hair gel and used undiluted setting lotion to make it stay.

The thing that I am most embarrassed about is wearing the same lifted wave box for more than one month. All I did was spray the outside with oil sheen spray and Pump IT UP! Freeze spray. I would occasionally squirt some Hot Six oil on my scalp.

The hot styles were: Bobs, short or long, (In junior high I got so tired of seeing people with short hair at the top and long at the bottom because almost everyone had that style), that's all I can think of
I wore: A bun
tongue.gif
most of the time, or straight hair with only the ends curly
I always wanted: long ringlets
Ashamed to admit: I sometimes got my hair hotcombed right after a relaxer

I don't know why since my hair was already straight, talk about a bad haircare practice.

This was a middle school style for me, but who could forget the MC Lyte mushroom cut???

I'm 21 so I guess that explains why the wrap dominated my high school years.

Like some others, I remember the other hairstyles but it was in middle school. I remember when I was in 5th grade, I went to the hairdresser to get a fingerwave and let me tell you, I thought I was CUTE! And I also remember the brown gel as well as many misinformed middle-schoolers who would always claim that "the brown protein gel makes your hair grow!"

Hot styles in my high school
Long hair, short hair, black girl, white girl--it didn't matter we all wanted BIG, feathered hair. Yes, I went to a predominantly white high school during the fashion challenged 80's.

I wore
BIG, loose curls. I got them by setting my hair on foam rollers (the horror!) with Miss Cool 5 Minute Fast Set.

I always wanted
Medium length, feathered hair--

But I didn't trust anyone to cut it!

I am ashamed to admit that
I cried and stormed off to my room because my mom told me that there was no way in Hell I was gonna get a jheri curl.
rofl.gif
I wanted a curl sooooo bad! I wanted a Classy Curl just like Ola Ray.

I hate to admit it but you are not the only one that went for more than a month without washing her hair!!!! I actually bought into the myth that "dirt makes your hair grow."
naughty.gif
It's amazing I didn't go bald from all that dirt and brown gel. I used to go for so long without washing my hair, it started to look white!!!

Hard hair was the "in" thing bck in the late 80s and early 90s.

Ohh that Ampro brown gel. Wrapping the hair didn't become popular until after I graduated.

Oh gosh I forgot about the fanned ponytail. My hair was too long for that style, and I was afraid of putting that much gel into it.

Oh gosh the rolls with those rhinestone beads. Oh gosh somebody please stop the madness.

I remember wearing my hair in the high ponytail, and wearing a stocking cap so that my bang would appear "stuck" on my forehead for that slicked down bang look.

When I was in high school, I wore:

assymetrical bob (with a black rinse)
finger waves in the front and my hair set on rods in the back
pulled back into a ponytail (I slicked it back with that brown gel)
In my senior year, I cut my hair short on the sides and in the back and full in the top (I call it the Anita Baker/Halle Berry haircut)

I had this style too, with my lil part on the side. I used to rock the mushroom

. I also loved the Farrah Fawcett feathered look in the front with the back curled under. That was my signature style. I have never had finger waves, a jheri curl, any buns or anything like that.
