Hi! I desperately need advice...

Hi! This may be a long post, but please if there is anyone out there, please help me. I'm new to this site, and so far I love it. I am in a dilemma... All my life, I always had a full, healthy head of long hair, because my mom used to take care of it. Then, when my senior year of high school hit, I ventured off to other hair salons, for example, the Dominicans. That went well for awhile, my hair grew. I used to let them blow dry my hair straight and everything. My mom said that isn't good for my hair. Finally, my hair started to thin out, but still had length. I let them do anything to my hair. I didn't know what types of shampoo they used or anything. Then one day, I just went in for a wash, and she got scissor happy and the next thing I know, my hair that was to the middle of my back was up to my chin. She kept cutting it because she said my ends were dead. So I was like okay, whatever. Everyone hated my hair cut. That was in the summer of 2002. Then, that September, I went to college, and did not take care of my hair at all! I let all my friends, who swore they knew what they were doing, do my hair, and now, I have breakage at the back of my scalp. When school was over, my mom noticed my tragic hair condition and started to do it for me again. Now, my hair is two inches past my shoulders, and I have decided to take the initiave and take charge of my own hair. The problem is, I have no idea what to do. I'm back at school again, and I do not trust anyone. I have 3c-4a hair. I just want to know the difference between a conditioner and a leave in conditioner. Also, I wash my hair every other week, thats how my mom always did it. Is that okay? Also, is it okay to use the same conditioner every time you wash your hair? Please help. I want my hair back!! Thanx!

Hi Genia!

Baby girl don't panic, it's o.k.

First of all I would like to start off by telling you that I am away from home at college as well, so I can empathize with you.

Secondly, I would like to give you a couple of tips that I have learned about how to take care of my hair while I've been away from good 'ol mommy.

1. Don't worry too much. If you stress yourself out over your hair, that's when you're going to see the least amount of growth. (stress can cause hair loss too ya know)

2. Do NOT put trust in college buddies to do your hair! Not everyone is your friend sweetie. (Females can & will get envious of long pretty hair)

3. Moisterize & treat your hair the way you would want to be treated if the tables were turned. The way I see it is if you were in the desert you would want water so that you wouldn't become dehydrated, as well as good food to eat right?, Well, dry strands of hair that lack nutrients and moisture will not thrive as opposed to someone that keeps their hair moisterized and takes care of it.

4. Leave your hair ALONE! The way you describe your hair it sound like it grows fine naturally. Try doing what I do, and wear your hair in an eloquent bun, braid out, or wash-n-go. I know your in college (I am too) and you may want to look cute for the Frat parties (if you go to them), but your hair doesn't have to be fried, dyed, and layed to the side to do so. These styles work fine for me because I am transitioning not to mention they are really cute! As well, I some times like to wear pretty scarves wrapped around my head that go with my outfits, or even those head wrap things that every body wears these days that wrap around your head & go into a bun. I wore one to class today with this barrett hat that resembled a Kangol, and my B.F. was like Uh-oH Alicia Keys! Anyway, Is Your hair relaxed, natural, or transitioning?

To answer your question about conditioners, my best guess is that conditioners moisterize your hair after you have shampooed, and leave-ins also moisterize as well as protect from environmental damages to the hair and thus are not ment to be washed out.
As well, I use the same conditioner everytime I wash my hair, and it works fine for me.

GREAT post, wingtoe... what she said!!

Ok, I would recommend that you start off with increasing your washing to once a week, since you are used to every 2 weeks right now. Get yourself a wide tooth seamless comb and a satin cap. Use only the seamless comb on your hair and sleep in the satin cap EVERY night.
Build your regimen slowly. Maybe start out with just a good gentle shampoo and instant conditioner, add your leave-ins and style your hair.
As you get used to your once-a-week schedule you may want to add in a pre shampoo hot oil and/or sealing your ends with vaseline before you put it up in a bun or other protective style.
Later on you may want to add distilled water rinses (as a final rinse after rinsing all the shampoo and conditioner out of your hair. It helps soften the hair, especially if your school has hard water like mine did.)
Try that out for starters and keep on asking us any questions you may have.
