Hey ladies (gents?)

I've recently decided to try and become a DIYer after YEARS of being a salon baby. My main reasons were i'm transferring to a university in january and can't afford it and I felt like even though I love my stylist, she doesn't treat my hair as well as I could. At the same time i'm giving up the salon, i'm also giving up the flat iron. I've been natural my whole life, but almost always worn it pressed or in braids. I'm currently switching it up between the infamous curly nikki twist and curl, (but i've yet to perfect it. tips, anyone? lol) and buns. anyways...this is my routine for now, please help me out where you see fit!

Cowash 2x a week w/ V05 moisture milk
Deep Condition 1x a week w/ a combination of AO HSR and olive oil to dilute it (it's so thick!)
Clarify 1x/month with ACV
and protein treatment (i'm currently doing my first one EVER as i type!) with a mayo, egg, V05, and coconut oil mix. leave on for 30 minutes. is this an appropriate time length?
and i will continue to wear my hair in either a bun or twist and curl

i'm still searching for the perfect moisturizer...any suggestions? i'm currently just using shea butter on my ends.

does this sound okay to everyone? is there anything i should add? my hair was breaking off at an alarming rate (like 10 hairs every time a wide tooth comb touched it!) so i decided to leave the flat iron and stylist alone for a while.

i stalk biracialhair, curly nikki, and mane and chic daily but any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds good to me.

As far as a moisturizer, you can use your HSR (seems like a lot of people do that) or your VO5. That way you don't have to buy anything new. And you can still seal your ends with the shea butter.

Also, don't get too caught up on doing everything on a schedule. Just go by how your hair feels. Check out www.blackgirllonghair.blogspot.com for more style ideas and tips and stuff. Oh and www.thenaturalhaven.blogspot.com. I love both those blogs.

I 100% agree with msa.....go by how your hair feels. You may realize you don't have to clarify as often or do protein treatments as often, etc.

As for moisturizer, i've been using Qhemet's Burdock creme and it works wonderfully. Perhaps you want to look into this next? Either way, finish up whatever it is that you are currently using as it sounds totally fine and as if it is working. I have yet to use shea butter, but that sounds perfectly fine. People here rave about shea butter.

I'm new to this as well and i've been making changes one by one to really idenfity which products work and how they work on my hair only. This is working really well for me b/c if I specifically want softness one week, no breakage another week or thick growth at my roots another week- I have an idea of exactly which products to turn to. This is making my haircare process a little bit more controlable and easier to manipulate. Immediate success is a great feeling. So continue to learn your hair - its temperament and all, have fun and HHG (happy hair growth)!

HTH (hope this helps)!

sincerely,
a fellow newbie in the game.
