help-my hair is dry

I recently posted a thread about how much I love henna-I still love the results of henna; However, my hair is kinda dry. Which I can not entirely blame on the henna because my hair has always been dry.

I have done a DC already(last night), however, my hair is still kinda dry. Is there something that anyone can recommend to help me regain and maintain moisture in my hair?

Also, I had my last texlax almost 3 weeks ago. How many weeks should I dc for and how often should I dc before I braid my hair in cornrow?

Thanks in advance ladies

How often do you wash your hair? What kind of shampoo do you use? How often do you moisturize and with what? If you're not washing it often that might be a contributor. You don't have to always use shampoo. Just co wash or put conditioner on and rinse off. I find that when my hair is drier I wash it at least twice a week not but don't shampoo all the time.

Thanks for respoinding.

I wash my hair with CON. I wash my hair once evey 2 weeks. However, I do conditioner rinses-they are just temporarly relief of my dry hair. My hair is really begining to grow now (finally) I have to find some good products so that I can retain everything that I grow.

Before 3 weeks ago I wa wearing braides for 7 weeks,so I know I need to dc. I normally dc 1-2 times per week.

My hair was not breaking at all for days and now it's started breaking a little last night. The ends are dry too!:ohwell:

Oh yeah, I mositruize daily. I have used ntm, sunsilk, almond oil and castor oil and my hair is still kinda dry.

Should i do a light protein with another dc or just dc for now?

I used to henna my hair years ago and it always turned out fine but I stopped (don't know why, I probably got tired of the long process). However, I started using henna again some time last year and I could not for the life of me figure out why my hair always felt dry and brittle. Then it occured to me, I would wash my hair first then apply the henna. Whereas, years ago I never washed first, I would apply the henna to dirty hair that needed washing and that helped ALOT. No more dry hair after henna.

Try not washing first and see if it helps.

ETA: Make sure that your hair is slightly wet when applying the henna mixture.

Are you oiling your hair with anything or using any type of other moisturizer in between the conditioner rinses. I use coconut oil ( 100% ) to keep my hair moisturized and I especially pay close attention to the hair ends to reduce breakage.

I did do my henna treatment when my hair was clean kinda (I washed 2 weeks before I did the henna) The henna was great-it's just really dry now...it was kinda dry before, but the henna made my hair soo strong it did not break, not it's breaking a little :ohwell:

It could also be the fact that I relaxed recently, I generally get a little breakage after that

Oops. I didn't see that you posted you were using ntm, sunsilk, almond oil and castor oil as your moisturizing oils. I stopped in the middle of the post to go eat some pizza and chicken wings from this tasty italian restaraunt down the street from me. Sorry. Anyway have you tried coconut oil or soaking your hair in coconut milk? I use coconut oil but I have tried coconut milk as well. They both work great for me. The milk is just a little messier.

Do you use the regular coconut oil like the one you would buy at the store?

I have never used coconut milk-however, i going to go out and buy some. I would like to try this, hopefully it will help.

Please ladies, keep it comming, I invite any suggestions, like products, how long i should dc, how often...

I always do a protein treatment when I find that my hair is not retaining moisture as long as it usually does. I use Nexxus Emergencee for a moderate and Aphogee for hardcore treatment (but I only use Aphogee when I have mushy/gummy wet hair, breaking dry hair).

You should be dc'ing with every wash. Like someone else said, you don't have to use shampoo each time, conditioner alone is suffice to cleanse the hair. I don't even use shampoo anymore (unless I henna).

Thanks for responding

Kiesha or any other ladies. How often should I being doing a dc?

Also, I tried the con wash daily for a while when I was working out often and that kinda dried my hair out at times. I think it's because my hair doesn't like to be air dried.

I normally have to dry my hair with a hooded dryer on the cool heat setting.

Thanks to those ladies who responded. Just wanted to let you know that my hair is recovering. Seems I had to do a dc for like 45 minutes....

When my hair was dry I DC more often. I do it 3times a week and co wash or wash daily because I have the time to do so. I air dry and would always have these frizzy ends and the girl recommended I section in fours and braid those sections so that my hair would dry smooth. I put magnetic rollers on the ends so that it would ensure they are smooth. This actually really works well. I add my moisutizer (a liquid and seal with coconut oil) (before putting on rollers) and then I try a plastic cap over my hair for about an hr or 2 and when I take it off, my hair is really moist, but not mushy and when its down air drying, its really smooth and manageable and no more frizzies.

I hear a good DC is Miss Keys 10 en 1, I use ORS Replenishing Pack/Conditioner and its my fave! I love my Tresemme Anti breakage as well and Suave Humectant. Another thing I did to battle dryness was oil rinses (i dont know why this works but it does). I added 2 capfulls of castor oil to my hair after I was done washing then rinsed 15 mins later. Then I DC.

Thanks for the info. About the oil rinses-how much did you say you used (only a cap)? Here i thought i needed the whole bottle. :lachen:

LOL! Girl, you'd have oily hair for days. :lachen: Castor oil is so thick but its a humectant so its great for bringing in moisture to your hair. I have shoulder length medium/fine hair and I use 2 capfulls and distribute that throughout my hair. (the cap size on my bottle is equal to that of a 20oz bottle of pop). I really focus of the ends and make sure my new growth is coated well too. They also say castor oil helps in thickening the hair and I vouch for this as well. It makes it so thick and healthy and gives it a nice healthy shine. It helps smooth the hairshaft as well which is why it's probably easier for me to air dry.

I will try this oil rinse after my next dc-which will be tuesday or Wednesday. So just put 2 cap full over my head and rinse with cool water?

for me...
when it seems like my hair isnt taking moisture as well
i try clarifying...and if that alone doesnt work...i give myself
a boost of protein

Yeah, I kind of pour one cap full into my hand and distribute, then add the second into my hand and distribute and drench the ends. Then I rinse in warm water so that the cuticle will still be open so that when I DC it enters the hairshaft. Then I rinse the DC in cool water to close the cuticle.

Wow, I have learned alot from you! I'm going to apply all of what you told me. Thanks again.

I want to add some pics of my hair soon because I'm getting really serious about achieving my hair goals in 2008
