If you look at the chart, I've got "split" "long" "taper" "white spot" "thickening" "knots" and most of all "incomplete" splits. How do you combat this? What is the cause so I can try to fix it? I put my hair in some twists using ecostyler gel recently so I can get my hands out of my hair because I started just cutting left and right like a woman possessed. I have so many of these in my hair, I might end up bald-headed.

Hmmm I could have written this thread because I've been experiencing the same thing. I have 'incompletes' mostly. I tend to have numerous incompletes on the same strand going up sometimes 4 inches. I *think* I'm getting them due to chronic dryness. I started baggying regularly and using Hawaiian Silky 14:1. I'm also slowly snipping my ends away. I cut about an inch off all around yesterday and I will cut another inch or two in June. In the mean time I'm going to continue to S&D. I'm hoping to be split free by the fall.

Incompletes are the ones I have the most of as well. It feels like I'm whining when I say this, but this really frustrates me. How am I supposed to grow any danged hair if it's so dry all the time, nothing works on it, and it splits like crazy? I've never seen splitting like this, so I have no clue how to go about fixing it. Some of them are so high, that it feels like maybe I need to just cut all of my hair off and go back to being bald again.

The incomplete ones: Do you brush your hair? I was using a Denman brush for a period until I started noticing these. After I stopped, I did not notice any new ones.

The other ones: Do you use heat regularly? Not deep condition regularly? This may be the culprit.

BUMPING

I have all except for the incomplete split. I got them split ends for not moisturizing my hair while it was in kinky twist (when I was a newly natural), and i wore kinky twist for 6 months straigth, without letting my hair have a break. Ive been on a trimming split ends rampage for months now but yet Iam seening some progress.

1. No, I don't brush my hair, but I do go through 3 different combs when I detangle. I start with a Jilbere shower comb, then go to a wide toothed goody comb, then run a pick through to shape. Could this be just as bad?

2. The only time I use heat is when I DC...but I'm not even sure how to answer the conditioning regularly thing because it never feels like anything happens when I DC my hair lol. I might see a change for like..a couple weeks, then it goes right back to being dry.

I don't know why, but I feel like I'm copping out if I just say *** it and relax. I love my curls, but my friend twisted my hair for me and she has gone natural a few times and even she was like, "WOW...your hair is like..super super tight curly." These splits are driving me nuts, lol.:wallbash:

Hmmm?
You may need to try a different moisturizing deep conditioner or maybe add some olive oil or coconut oil to your current one. How about moisturizing every day? What moisturizer/leave-in do you use? My hair loves getting wet. Unless I am wearing a braid-out or twist-out, I saturate my hair every day with my spray bottle mixture. My hair loves it.
I won't be able to comment on your moisturizer/leave-in but someone else may be able to. I only use is Lustrasilk conditioner mixed with natural oils. The only other ones I tried are:
Cantu Shea Butter - didn't like; my hair felt slimy then dry feeling
Curls products - my hair did not like
Pantene Relaxed and Natural conditioner as a leave-in; gave my hair a powdery feel but otherwise my hair liked it
Giovanni - my hair did not like
and one other that I can't remember the name of.

I've been trying the CFC Gold + water spray for now. I was using the S-Curl as a daily moisturizer, but my hair always felt so sticky and after I washed, dry like I never moisturized in the first place. DC I'm using is the yes to carrots masque...but it, like a lot of other things I've tried...does nothing. My hair didn't like giovanni either...hair was crispy, lol. When my hair feels dry during the day, I'll spray it with mane n' tail leave-in. It helps for a little bit, then my hair goes back to where it was.

I'm sitting here with the coconut creme relaxer on my hair now as we speak. First time trying it out.

You reminded me, I also used S Curl but stopped for the same reasons that you said. Also, one day my hair was freakishly soft and it freaked me out. Depending on how you wear your hair, I suggest adding more water. Water and my hair love each other. I also swear by Lustrasilk although others may disagree. The day I started using Lustrasilk mixed with a natural oil was the day my hair became what I knew it could always be. If they ever discontinue it, I don't know what I will do.
I hope you find something what works for you.

Thanks for the info. :) I hope so too...made a promise with my best friend to hold off doing anything drastic until his visit, lol. I'd really like to solve these issues instead of just give up.

hmmm I have definately experienced most of these, the incomplete ones were due to bad flat iron techniques, mainly flat ironing while the hair was still damp and hearing "pop!" several times, i'm sure that was the culprit.

Nowadays my splits are mostly 'split' and 'baby splits' and i just spent 2 days (about 4 hours in total) s&ding my whole head, section by section, it's tedious but feels so good after.

For prevention, i would suggest maybe abit more protective styling and sealing of your ends with oils and daily moisture for the dryness. I hope you find an answer soon, splits can be so stressful

this is great info!!! i noticed a decrease amt of splits when i stopped using my denman and started using a shower comb
