HEAT DEEP CONDITIONING... can it dry out hair?

I searched and did not see this as a question....

But I have very dry hair (stillll working on fixing the problem), is it possible that doing DC's with the hooded dryers can be drying out my hair?

I sit under the dryer on high for 30 minutes.
I have on a conditioning cap as well.

My head gets so hot, it almost hurts (lol) and I don't know if that can actually be SUCKING out moisture?

Does anybody else feel like it could? Am I under there for too long for extremely dry hair?

Thanks ladies!

I find this to be true. Once I lowered the temp under the dryer it was no problem.

I also think DCing with any chelating agents in the ingredients can have the same effect. (DCs that have sulfates, edta, etc)

So eliminating heat period would be bad though since the heat opens the hair shaft to let the moisture seep in, right?

I highly doubt that is the cause of your dryness. A lot of us stay under for a whole hour and it helps that much more.
Can you share your entire regimen and products so we can see if there might be another cause?

I personally think the heat from a hot shower, body heat, and DC cap is good enough. Some ppl DC with just a cap, but it usually takes longer to penetrate. If you are worried about the moisture seeping in, maybe you could add a penetrating oil like coconut to your DC.

My regimen is constantly changing due to my cry for a real moisture rich regimen that doesn't contain anything with protein.

But the products I am using currently are:

Giovanni Deep Moisture shampoo to wash once a week (I do aerobics on Tues/Thurs and I have to wash my scalp because I get build up)
I have used Giovanni Hydrating Clarifying shampoo too in the past month.

I just RECENTLY started to cowash. I tried Hello Hrydration, Pantene Relaxed and natural conditioner mask, v05 passion fruit smoothie

I have DCed with AOHSR (but it didn't feel very soft). Once a week.
I'm upping my DC to twice a week. I don't know what else to use to soften, I used that one because it is supposed to have 0 protein.

I am sitting here as we speak trying my own home made DC with unrefined Shea, Coconut, v05 passion fruit smoothie and some other essential oils on slightly damp hair.

I did a porosity test and my hair is not too porous. The strands I tried (3 of them just to make sure) stayed a float.

I even made a mix with glycerin in it last night, my hair was soft when wet... but then it felt dry (not TOOO dry, but NOT soft) after it dried. I read an article on here saying glycerine can actually take moisture FROM the hair if the air is not humid enough.. so I dumped my little mix out.

I'm so desperate.
My hair grows fast as a weed, BUT it's so strong + lack of moisture = breakage at times. I know some breakage is inevitable, but mine seems to be due to extra strong hair that NEEDS moisture.

And the part that breaks off isn't the colored part, the nape and crown are growing well and staying intact( although not as soft as I'd like)

I know this was LONG -- but I yearn for a solution!

I even tried an ACV rinse, maybe I had too much build up when I tried it so it didn't work???

I actually put coconut oil in everything! lol I figured it would soften. My hair is so confusing. I did a porosity test, it was good. My hair floated. It's soft when wet, but when the products dry, it doesn't seem to stay soft. GRRR.:wallbash:

When is the last time u clarified? Do u use protein? Both of these help hold on to moisture.

Do you use the shea butter and coconut oil as your regular moisturizers (when you aren't washing/cowashing/DCing)?

No, I was for a little bit.
But some reason I stopped? lol
Was that dumb of me to stop.

The Shea I know is great for 4a/4b hair that is coarse/dense/thick.
I think my issue was the fact that I can't stand the way it feels on water. It feels all oily. Should I use that as my leave in on dry or damp hair?

I actually made a mix with Shea and coconut oil.
Using it on dry hair vs damp/wet hair makes a difference?

this is so difficult. :spinning:

I don't use much protein because my hair is REALLY strong. I've done elasticity tests and it's pretty strong. I need more moisture from the looks of it. I've done the elasticity test too. I pulled a strand and it wouldn't stretch very far. It didn't break soon, but it didn't stretch very far EITHER.

I know some people use it as a leave in, but it feels too oily for me too, and my hair is too fine to use it that way. I can only use it on dry hair. I use a little conditioner as a leave in or something that is specifically a leave-in, then use the shea after my hair has mostly dried...then reapply to dry hair daily.

Have you tried a lighter, water based moisturizer? (Ex: Qhemet Biologics Burdock Root Butter Cream)

I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question, but after you moisturize your hair, are you sealing with oil?
My hair would never stay moist until I started getting serious with my sealing. Just mixing the oils in with products wasn't enough. I had to have a separate sealing session, in order to lock in all the moisture. Maybe that's the case for you too?

I thought the same thing about my hair (that it was extra dry and needed lots of help) b/c the texture it seemed to be when dry. I've learned to accept that my hair is okay and that its not lacking in moisture. I DC just about twice a week (most of the time moisture DC's, occasional protein), cowash, daily moisturize and seal. My hair is soft when wet but when it dries, its kinda "hard" and not AS soft as it was when wet.

I learned I have CNAPP texture in most places and this is just the texture of my hair. I too did a porosity control and I incorporate that PC conditioner occasionally just to make sure. We've done just about all we can do...I don't think your hair dryer is drying out your hair by the way. If there is a "cure" for your hair, I'd like to know what it is too b/c I'm going through the same thing.

Okay, I will try it on dry hair like you. You have some pretty hair btw!
But I made a moisturizer that SEEMS to be working well. I was trying to do products I could pick up in the stores and cost effective lol.

I just have to figure out how to LOCK in the moisture w/o making my hair too oily /greasy feeling. How long did it take for you to figure your hair out?

NO question is a stupid question to me! lol
But I can't say that I do seal.

I have been sealing my ends... do you seal your entire head? like slather it on after you moisturize? maybe that is my problem too!?

so refreshing to find somebody that has the same issues as me! I swear this has been the craziest thing for me. I feel OBSESSED trying to get my hair SOFT when dry. I will def let you know something if I do ever figure it out, or maybe it can't get softer? lol I'm doing a DEEP CONDITIONER treatment right now, trying to figure this out. I need moisture to get my hair from being TOO strong (my strands are so strong it's crazy)

You turned down the heat? Good. You do NOT need to have a headache while you DC. Your hair doesn't need high heat, just warmth and that's it. I'm really thinking that you just need a DC with enough humectants in it. Idk if you're wanting to buy something else or just use up what's in the house, but honey works wonders for some as a humectant. A little goes a long way. When my 4b new growth comes in, the only weird thing that keeps it hydrated is if I oil my scalp when wet after I rinse out my DC, dry on low, and re-oil when dry. It's weird, but it works.

Thank you. Actually, I still haven't figured it out! But I'm geting pretty close, and I'm having a good time learning and trying things out. :yep:
Good luck and keep us updated!

humectants , don't those draw moisture from the air ? and if not enough humidity in the air, from our hair?
