Have you ever tried this for hilights???

Okay, this is what's going through my head:

My hair is currently red from henna, but I'm thinking about going black. How about coating a few of my curls with vaseline before dying so that I can keep a few red highlights and the rest of my hair will be black...

Anyone ever tried this?
