Have you ever been bashed for doing your own hair?

Despite that your hair looks good all the time. Like for example, you go somewhere and your getting so much compliments and this person asks where you get it done at and you say you did it yourself and they say "you should go to this salon I go to". Does that sound like jealousy to you?

My dumb ex made a comment one time about the fact that I never went to "make my hair" at the salon, to which my response was, "maybe if you gave me the money for it I would go". He never mentioned it again...

Yea. It's always by women whose hair is less healthy than mine too. I'm not sure if its jealousy though. These same women all think a relaxer is the only acceptable way to treat black hair.

Lilmama1011, I don't believe it's jealousy and I also don't beleive everyone is out to get us. Most tend to assume we do our hair at home because we have not found a good, reliable salon. Therefore, I believe the person is simply trying to be nice and refer you to what they consider a good salon. I would just kindly follow up with something like -- oh girl I'm not looking for a salon. I do my hair at home because I want to.

No...........

I always get caught by someone soliciting a new salon when my hair is a complete mess and in a sad attempt for a bun ... it's like clock work. For strangers it's probably just trying to get their fav stylist some more clients.

This. Or because you're too cheap to pay. I've had folks ask why I didn't pay to get it done, since I can afford it.

A trip to the salon should be like a trip for a facial or massage or pedicure. It's part of the pamper routine.

So I wouldn't get offended if someone recommended I go to the salon.

They're probably thinking "Why won't you spoil yourself sometimes? I know of a place where they'll look after you"

You should thank them kindly for the offer.
It's so easy to get on a hair journey, have healthy beautiful hair and conclude the rest of the world was out to get us. I suspect it's not so.

Oh yeah! My daughter. Mainly because she is anti-natural. I get compliments from EVERYBODY else on a regular basis except her. Strangers, friends, colleagues you name it. Most people are surprised that I do my own twists. Even stylists and cosmetology instructors compliment me! I get compliments on my tuck-n-roll styles, the fact that I went from bald to SL on my own, etc...but let me have a frizzy hair day. She will hurry up and say "you should probably get it done at the salon." Or the salon can do this... Stephanie (the stylist who made my hair fall out when it was relaxed) can do this or that... Last week when I told her about a new flat iron spray that keeps my hair straight all week even in high humidity, and I sent a pic to her, all she said was... "yeah it looks straighter."

So, in her case since she's anti-natural she doesn't want to believe that my hair can thrive since it's not 3A or something of that nature. Oh yeah, she did say my little ponytail looked nice the other day. And I had to pry that out of her! It's ok though. We'll see what she says when it's down my back!

Oh yeah, and one day we were watching an episode of Tabatha's Salon Takeover and Kim Kimball was about to do a client's hair. She was natural and I don't think she wore it straight very often. Anyway, the girl had a lot of thick, nice hair. Kim said "It looks like she does her hair at home." and I'm not sure if she meant it in an insulting way, but my daughter laughed at this. I know she was thinking see! I keep telling y'all! She's always talking about how people shouldn't go natural unless like I said they're a 3A or something.

Yup. Sometimes people compliment me on my hair and then ask if I still don't go to salons. I say yea, I'm the only one I trust with my hair, and they sometimes get a little offended and tell me I can't be afraid of the salon for the rest of my life... Like I insulted their salon- going decisions...

Weird

I have 1 friend (with distressed edges) that comments to me on "trying to be cheap" because I no longer frequent salons.

Despite my hair being in great condition and flourishing, she says "Yaya, you should pamper yourself and go to the salon to get your hair done, stop being cheap when it comes to your hair"..

Okay boo. I'm good.

What is so funny though is that the very people that think we're being cheap by doing our own hair would probably fall out if they knew how much we spend on oils, conditioners, tools, etc.

That's What i was thinking think you can't afford to get your hair done but that's not everyone's Case. I had a setback from a stylist and i was tired of the holidays salons was closed and the other days before i was working, it was time to learn to do my hair. I actually enjoy doing my hair weekly, that's my personal spa, when i get my hair done I'm on edge and mad the way they comb my hair. I have a very good regimen of detangling my hair losing less hair

Very very true. I will splurge on my hair. Not many beauticians know how to comb hair simply from bottom to top with a wide teeth comb and they call that pampering?! Sounds like a nightmare to me

:lachen::lachen::lachen:Are you trying to being nice here?

When I visit my stylist, he usually scolds me for not coming in every month or every 2 months...but I always have the longest & thickest hair out of all of his clients in the salon when he says this.

Also, my mom continues to tell me that my edges are thinning out, or that my hair will fall out because I've been stretching for too long...but I recently flat ironed and my edges looked fine, and there was no breakage whatsoever. I always take what she says with a grain of salt though, because she'll turn right around and ask me to wash her hair or borrow my leave ins after she nags me!

And all this isn't to brag, but just to demonstrate that you probably know your hair better than anyone...and while people may have the best intentions, you have to use your best and honest judgement to assess what's on your head!

By Hairdresser's yep..Always have something to say & errrbody in the salon, has jacked up hair under a weave...

Happy Hair Growing!

I always wash/DC/detangle my hair myself so no matter if I'm getting it straightened, braided or whatever, I come with my hair blow dried and ready to go. I have one person I go to for braiding and another for flat ironing and both have done my hair since I was a teenager.

Well I had to use a different stylist one time and when I told her I'd already washed/blow dried etc. she was like oh "Can I wash your hair sometime?" and made up some excuse why she could do a better job than me.:perplexed

Uh no, I wash my hair myself for a reason.

The most I've gotten is the Dominicans are good at straightening hair but I usually get that when my hair is flat ironed...then they asked where I got it done....say I did it myself...and then the whole the Dominicans are good at-spiel.

To which I always tell folks 'Yes, they'll straighten your hair and then in 2 months you'll be crying about having no edges. This is why I do my own hair.'

And they leave me alone.

I used to hear a lot of negativity when I first joined the LHCF and started the whole do it yourself thing. Now, most folks in my life are used to it, especially when they saw my results.

Yes; it kinda funny, actually.

At the beginning of my HHJ, my hair was NL and damaged. My mom constantly suggested that I go get my hair done at a salon, like my sister did.

Now, at healthy WL, she doesn't say anything about my hair, at all, but suggests that I do my sister's hair, too. :nono::lol:
