Have Twist Outs Helped Your Hair Growth?

I ask because I really feel like twist outs have helped my hair.

I got really tired of doing a lot of bunning because I didn't know any creative styles. Not to mention, the bunning didn't seem to be doing all that much to help with my growth. I was stuck at right above APL.

So, last fall, I asked my stylist if it was safe to wear my hair in a twist out during colder months. She told me it was just fine as long as I made sure to moisturize my ends and deep condition regularly.

So, everytime I am 6 weeks post, I start wearing my hair in a twist out (I will switch it up every once in a while with a bun). I wash and deep condition twice a week, and when I re-twist some nights, I will wet my hair and apply Garnier Sleek and Shine leave in.

The last time I went to my stylist in April, she was like "Girl...whatever you've been doing to your hair, KEEP DOING IT! It looks SO good these days!"

Well my hair is in twists now (extensions), and I think its helping my hair...I think.. I took out and redid one twist & my hair was significantly longer & it seems like I retained it all.

I don't know if they've helped with my growth. I think I'd say they've helped with my stretch which in turn is going to help with retention, which should translate into growth results. I love twist outs and braid outs, I'm finding the flexi rod sets are just as great.

I've been doing braid outs because I don't have enough hair for a bun! I just started my healthy hair journey January 2009 so as of right now I'm not sure if they are helping or hindering my growth/retention. I was full neck length when I started in January and will be relaxing July 2. I'll see then what the results are. I really like doing braid outs. It's quick, easy and very little manipulation. Plus it has allowed me to not use heat. I can't wait to see where I am length wise in July!!!

I've been wearing my hair in twists the majority of the time and I've gone from a less than two inch twa to grazing APL in 13 months. I've been in the "Twist for Growth" Challenge since March. At the start of the challenge my longest layer was almost SL, and today, I'm about a quarter inch from APL. My hair does grow pretty fast, so I would say that twists and moisturizing has definitely helped me retain the length I've gained.

I can definitely say that yes twist outs as well as briad outs helped my hair to retain length. When I first started doing them though my hair would be very dry once I took them down so I only braid/twist on damp hair not soaking wet and it has done wonders for my hair not to mention with transitioning.

I'll let you know in a few months (about 6 should do it!?). I have always done twistouts when my hair is loose- but I have not been consistent. I think I may try to alternate twists to twistouts to press every 3-4 weeks! Will let you guys know the outcome!

They helped me retain length. I went from layered NL to layered APL-ish on mostly twistouts.

However, as my hair has gotten longer (and more inclined to tangle), I do them less often. It is mostly twists now.

:bump:

Big fluffy twistouts are one of my favorite styles, so I've been thinking about wearing twistouts for a long time and hoping to retain length wearing this style. I wonder if retwisting my hair in 6-8 sections every night would be too much manipulation.

Keeping my hair twisted has maintained length due to the fact that it stays detangled so less breakage while combing. But I just don't twist I make sure I keep the ends tucked under. I also wash my hair in twists too.

Same here. I even search and destroy in my twists, lol.

This looks like a great idea for me. I have never done a twist out in my life.

Are they big twists or little ones. Can anyone direct me to a visual or video of this?

Is it better to keep the twists in or undo them?

Lawd so many questions?

I fared better with mini twists versus twistouts and braidouts :look: But I am new to both (last 6 months for twistouts/braidouts and past 3 months for mini-twists), so I let you know when more time has passed  I didn't re-twist every night either, I just moisturized and wore a satin bonnet to bed...I was lazy :giggle: After a few days, if it started looking frizzy, I wore it in a puff until wash day arrived (I did this once a week). I didn't want to manipulate my hair everyday. Now I keep my mini twists in for 4-5 weeks at a time, take them down, wash/DC and then re-twist them. I spritz them everyday and it seems to work out well so far

I alternate between bunning and twist/ twist outs and that coupled with cowashing a lot seem to help me retain!

I was relaxed when I first found LHCF and all I did were braidouts. My hair flourished! You can see in my fotki.

I am now natural with some texturized ends and I've been doing twist outs since the beginning of November. I hope to achieve the same results. ...I need to update my fotki badly.... hmm

Yep, very helpful, especially in saving my edges from trauma and drama. Keeping my edges twisted or twisted out really helped.

i did twist/braid outs all last winter. My hair thrived. ITs not really the style, but because i was constantly DCing, keeping it stretched (so my detangle sessions didnt cause any breakage), and doing little manipulation (i only re did my hair every like 4-5 days).

I had to get in on this YES for twists out absolutely for some reason braid outs are a no go working on it tho. I wear my hair in twists 5days out 7 and the other 2days are twists outs.

MissAlinaRose I tried your method of braiding my twists so they can be stretched and I love it! The first day I did a twistout the way I mentioned above, then the second day I did a braidout! It has hang and I usually can't achieve that much hang until the 5th day or so. I posted pics in the Post your pretty hair thread sticky.
