I think I'm about to :look:. The rest of my hair is moving along swimmingly, but the very nape of my neck, where most people would have "baby hair", on the right and left side never grow past 2 inches or so. I think my scarf maybe rubbing that area, but I have no clue how to protect it. It stays dry and nothing seems to moisturize it. I believe it's 4a/b and it lies right next to a 3b/c section of hair. I use to just shave it to keep my hairline neat...I may go back to it.

Don't give up! I have the same problem. I'm stuck in a predictable cycle - it catches up lengthwise in the spring/summer and i'm good to go, then as soon as the weather cools and I start wearing turtle necks, coats and scarves, it rubs away/breaks off no matter what I do to try and prevent it. My nape is low like yours too, but yours is longer than mine is during the winter "break"! Trust, I'd love to have your length.

Maybe you could try to braid it up and it will probably grow out. Currently mine is too short even to braid. Keep it extra moist too. That's the only thing that worked for me but I haven't kept it up despite myself.

Good luck!!

I use to have that problem. My solution was using thick castor on it,a scarf in that area and actually straightening that part even when I was protective styling. In the natural state I was getting too much breakage.

Thanks! I may try to braid it up, but it sometimes gets caught in my wigs.

You may be on to something....I think I might invest in some ORS edge control to keep them from curling back. It sometimes forms a nest of SSKs and I end up having to cut it low all over again :nono:

I am bout ready to throw in the towel, but glad you asked this question. My nape has been a problem area for a LONG time, but I am going to start with the castor oil regi. I try and keep it moisturized, tie a scarf around it, but not tight and still get nape breakage. :nono: ugh!

THis is an old pic of my nape, but not much has changed... :ohwell: I am dealing with two different textures which makes it hard. I definitely feel your pain.

I have. My nape is just a hot mess at the moment. IT doesn't help that a pull at it and cut it off when I pull on it too much.

I have had the same issue for as long as I can remember. I never heard of the castor oil treatment, but ill have to add it to my regi.

I think that maintaining the length of the nape is easiest if you keep the hair back there detangled (not rolling into small beads) and keep them sealed. I started doing this during the middle of 2012, and my hair there (that's slightly below the kitchen, my hairline) is about 2.5 inches.

I also tried to braid the small sections into small twists. Keeping it detangled and not rubbing against tops (shirts, blouses, etc.) is really key.

I think moisturizing the nape is the key but I noticed when I went natural my nape flourished. If you have a good moisturizer use it every single day and you will see improvement.

I'm glad you wrote this topic bc I been battling this issue all my life with relaxed and natural where I wod just have it lined up like guys do and if I grow it out it never grew past 2 inches and family loves to talk about my Be-de-Bes(sp) lol. Even permed that area now that I'm natural then shaved it off again, I what to grow it out again.

Im working with it.

what has been working is keeping it moisturized and tucked away (I just make a flat twist going straight across my nape. My problem is that I literally pull my hair off there. So once the area is "tucked away" I tend to leave it alone
