Has anyone experienced hair damage from going to Dominican hair stylists?

i was wondering that also. but dont you have to be licensed in order to do hair?

Not necessarily. In Georgia, an unlicensed individual can perform certain services, provided that no chemicals are being used. The typical dom blow out more than likely does not require a license anywhere.

I've never had a Dom blow out because 1) I get bouncy hair without one; 2) their practices are NOT healthy; 3) I've seen and heard of too much damage as a result of their practices; 4) the one dom stylist I observed is nasty and did everything wrong (unkempt, dirty salon, overlapped and overworked relaxer, ripped through client's wet transitioning hair with comb. Oftentimes, you do get what you pay for. Dominican salons? No thank you!

I know many women who have had good experiences with DS but I am just not one of them. The last time I went to one to get my roots blown out, the stylist did get my roots silky straight (I was at least 8 weeks post by then). BUT I noticed a little while afterwards that my right ear was hurting. When I went to touch it to try to figure out what was wrong, I noticed the skin was very sensitive. My skin was peeling because the stylist had actually burned my ear with the blowdryer  I do remember the blow dryer being hot but I hadn't realized it was that hot. I have not been to one since. :nono:

Okay, I've been reading this thread and I just want to make the comment that I don't think that the blow out is bad, it's that my hair cannot withstand the blowout.

I recently went to get a relaxer, and the stylist I go to is into haircare and explained to me that my hair is sooooo different from a dominican woman's hair. She made a joke and said "have you ever felt one strand of a dominican women's hair? well it feels like 5 strands of yours or mine". And it's true. The dominican women who I know are regulars in the dominican salon ALL have long, thick, APL, BS, WL hair. Their hair can handle that heat. Mine can't, so that's why I'm no longer getting blow outs!

I agree with this. I know quite a few people who go weekly and they don't have breakage, sore scalps, etc. That's great that the stylist took the time to break this down for you.

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if anyone has had any issues/growth with just getting the roller set and roots blown out. I went for my first last week and they were very gently, used the widest comb I have ever seen to detangle, and suggested I NOT get the roots blown, although I got it done. Come to think of it, they ONLY did roller sets. I am definitely thinking of going back again.
Thank you for your thoughts

when i am stretching, getting the roots blown actually helps me, i dont loose so much hair when I comb, its more manageable, but that is what works for me

Just having that hot blow dryer on my scalp caused issues for me (sore scalp and dry scalp). Also, it was way too much manipulation. I started flat ironing my roots. I used to be an avid Dominican pusher...not anymore. I still go to my Dominican stylist for a perm, but that's it. Everything else I do.

The last time I went to the Dominicans I told the stylist only to blow out the roots, not my length. And she understood me (she speaks perfect english) and what did she do? Blew out the length of my hair. I just don't think most care. I've tried different salons and I still haven't found one yet.

1) Have dominican hair salons affected your hair in a negative way?
No. Never, my hair actually thrived in the DS. The key is knowing ur hair and letting them know what workd for YOU.

2) If so, how did you get your hair back to a healthy state? N/A

3) Has anyone been able to successfully go to dominican hair salons and keep their hair healthy (not just long)?
Me, I noticed that people who get contant blow outs should be doing more DCs...I have even notice my stylist refering a lady to get a trim because of damaged ends and she rather get a blow out from root to tip! The key is letting the stylist know what u want and what works for your hair, I dont get blow outs often only the part in the middle or when I am abt 10 weeks post to manage my NG.

Feel free to PM me as well....TIA[/quote]

My 2 experiences with a Dom salon were not good. My hair looked fine, but on both visits, I felt that I was treated rudely, almost as if I needed to be glad that they were doing my hair. On the second visit, I had some NG ( a lot really..) and the stylist acted as tho I was asking her to shuck a whole field of corn when I just wanted a blow-out without the dryer set on NUCLEAR level. So, needless to say, I never went back!
