Hard water!! High Hummidity state Jacksonville FL

Ok, so I am naturual and I am relocating to Jacksonville, FL. I just found out that they have one of the worst water systems in the world. The hummidity is really high and the water hard. I'm not sure if I will need to go back to perms to keep my hair looking nice, find a natural salon, or just cut it all off!!!

Please, any suggestions, does anyone live in Jacksonville FL with these issues?

Lol, I live in Jax, and I wish you luck! I have a few family members that are natural, and they are able to take care of their hair. They buy distilled water to wash their hair and refill the bottles at the machines at the grocery store (I think). That, or you have to get a water softener. I would also consider getting a sprite shower filter even with the water softener.

I'm relaxed and I just use ACV rinses to get rid of hard water, but I live in an apartment, so that's my only choice right now.

ETA: The humidity is what it is. If you're a 4b like me, there's nothing you can do but learn to work with it. I'm just wearing braidouts, and if I'm outside a lot, I put it in a messy bun. I'm about 6 months post relaxer. If you're in the 3's, I've heard that Sabino moisture block works really well out here. One of my friends is a natural 3c, and for moisture she keeps a little spray bottle of her own mixture in her purse (usualy water, some kind of conditioner, and sometimes some kind of frizz serum), and sprays her hair all the time when she's out.

There is only one natural hairstylist that I know of. Here's the website: http://www.millenniumsol.com/. I don't know anything about their prices. I think that a few hair cutteries do keratin treatments here as well.

Yes, I live in Jax, FL too. I have a friend who is waist length natural and her hair is beautiful. I don't know her regimen and she is also a licensed hairstylist too.

I'm not in Jax but in Houston we have hard water here and one of the most humid cities. I try to do as one of the ladies above mentioned and use distilled water at the grocery store machine BUT sometimes it just isn't enough for me to know my hair is fully rinsed so then I have to depend on my Aquasana water filter. You would want to catch a water softener, they cost a pretty penny I think for the whole house but if you have sensitive skin and your filter doesn't do the job it's a necessary expense. As for salons try looking on nc's salon suggestion list they have the reviews there too.
The himidity here doesn't bother my hair I'm 4a/3c as long as I use something like Set It Free (moisture lock by deva) or moisturize and seal (with water, leavein, oil, and thick butter like qb or melted shea. I do a 2strand twist or just wig it when it gets really humid HTH

I live in jax. I cannot relate to the hard water thing. I have never heard that nor has the water ever had any negative effects on my hair relaxed or natural. I've lived here 8 years.The humidty does suck sometimes. But we do have a couple of months out of the year when it isn't too much of problem. It does get COLD here.I am currently transitioning. I am 20 weeks post and my new growth has been holding up excellently in the humidity when I wear it flatironed. I think this is because of my flatiron and I use grapeseed oil as heat protectant. I plan on wearing my hair straight a couple times a year when I am fully natural and I also plan of training my hair. When I was natural before I was only able to wear my hair out and striaght a couple of times when the humidty was low. Hopefully trained hair will stand up a little bit better to the humidity. The keratin treatment sound like a good idea too, but it too expensive for me.

I live in Orlando and I just DC a whole lot. Wear braids and twists and really haven't had too many issues. I actually love the heat and humidity here and I feel that it helps my hair as opposed to being upnorth where it was cold alot of the time year round while I lived in PA for almost 15 yrs

I'm In Cobleskill, ny at the moment and it is relatively soft. There are a few minerals and kinks in our water system but we still have pretty soft water. I would highly suggest a water softener, those are expensive though. And a shower filter. If you can't do that then try buying distilled water/bottle water by the gallons. One whole gallon of water only lasts 1 week for me since I wash my hair 2x a week and use shampoo + condish both times. I hope you have good luck!

Well, I'm in Houston which has high, HIGH humidity and relaxing your hair is NOT the solution. It'll still get frizzy and it'll puff up during relaxer stretches. My braidouts also get bigger as the day goes on...My hair stays more moisturized during humid weather, since there's more moisture in the air and lots of random rain showers. Me and my friends, both relaxed and natural wear a lot of buns in the summertime. I wouldn't stress out about it...

@silenttullip I had no idea Houston had hard water...I've never experienced any negative effects of the water. It doesn't dry out my skin or hair....

We bought a Morton Water Saver for $400 on sale. We have seven people in our family though so we bought a mid to large size unit. If you have less people in your family, you can pay less for a much smaller unit.

With water softeners, you need to have experience with plumbing. So, we hired a plumber to install it for $300.

Disclaimer with water softeners:

Water softeners remove the calcium, magnesium and some iron from the water and exchanges it for sodium chloride.

Long story short, shampoos that gave you slip, will no longer work. For instance, I have used QP's Conditioning Creme poo for over five years. Once the water softener was installed, bye bye QP. The chemist at QP confirmed that conditioning ingredients in their poo will not work with sodium chloride.

So now, literally NO poos work for me anymore. It seems to dred, harden or stiffens my hair kind of. Some poos more than other are worse. So far, I only deal with it the conditioner softens it back up.

The poos on the market are formulated for hard water...not soft water.

If poos are not a big deal for your regimem, then it's not a problem. Conditioners work just fine though.

If anyone has found a poo that works with a water system, please PM and let me know!

Edited: Based on what I've learned, shower filters only remove chlorine not all of the other minerals that are found in hard water. Keep in mind, water softeners do not remove 100%. Research it first before buying. The Morton reps (esp Lonnie) was extremely informative.

Hmm...I've lived in Jax for like a decade and been natural for 2 yrs and I haven't experienced any real problems with water or humidity. Not that it isn't humid, but once my hair is moisturized and styled it holds up well. I know our water isn't the best, but I think the statements you heard may be a little exaggerated..I dunno. Maybe it varies based on where you live in Jax. I live in North Jax btw.. I do an occasional apple cider vinegar rinse to restore ph balance and remove product buildup but overall my hair does just fine. I say get here, see how the water affects your hair then make a decision. At least you will have some options if it is an issue for you. Humidity has never been an issue with me since going natural, that was more of a relaxed problem ie..sweating it out, frizz ect.. My hair is very thick and full and looks like a bush if I do nothing to it humidity or not...a curly bush but a bush nonetheless. I dunno how you style your hair usually but anywho here you are..
