Hand in Hair Disease

I've had serious cases of hand in hair disease for most of my adult life...typically around the time that my new growth would come in and it was time for a relaxer. I couldn't resist putting my hands in my hair to touch those wavies. I also had a gold medal in hair twirling.

Now that I am transitioning, I have an abundance of wavies and curlies from doing braidouts. I CANNOT keep my hands out of my hair!!! As I drive home from work, my hands just automatically reach inside my hair and play play play! I can't seem to stop!

Anyone else out there with this disease and if so, how did you cure it? I know it's not healthy for my hair and I would like to stop cold turkey!

I love feeling those "wavies" myself...can't help myself. Sorry!

Then I guess I have hand in hair disease and comb in hair disease lol and looking in the mirror at my hair disease. I don't know what the cure would be LOL, but as soon as I get the chance I wrap my hair and/or tie my scarf around it so that I can't touch it.

I have this disorder too. I was thinking the safest option for me would be to cut my fingers off. I have to do what is best for the hair.

I do this, too and I know of no known cure other than having ugly hair so that you or no one else will never want to put their hands in it!

Are you kidding??????? There is no cure...(and the laughter starts--like at the end of the Thriller video) -enter Miss J at the mention of Thriller

I have been natural for a while now, and I still have a case of HIH. I am not as bad as I used to be; so I guess it comes with time.

@ Serei

You guys think you have it bad, I am natural and wearing BRAIDS and I still have a serious case if HIH. Go figure!

LOL...I can't be cutting off my limbs for my hair now...

I have it too...but what cured me were the horror stories that I read while transitioning of people who had been growing their hair out for two years, and barely had a year's worth of growth. It's natural for me to reach up and feel my wavies, but as soon as I remember those stories, I take my hand out fast! As time has passed, I do it less and less.

The thing that helps me the most is the protective styles. I don't mess with it unless it's before bed time and I apply hair oil and tie it up. When my hair is down, that's a different story!!

I'd like to think that putting my hands in my hair all of the time assists with its growth somehow, like adding more "energy" to it! Since my hair is always up in protective styles, this helps a lot. My hands are usually just stroking my "wavies".

I used to do the same thing when I was trasitioning to feel all the new growth coming in but after a while I just lost interest in putting my hand in my hair(thank god)

I've seen your album btw and I think your hair looks very nice

Ah! Ok, so I am not the only one. You guys are too funny.

Wearing my hair up used to keep my hands out of it but I've found a way to reach in there and feel away anyway! I'm just going to have to watch myself. I worry that it will cause damage if I do it too much.

Delightful Flame - care to expand on your story? Are you saying that you heard of people transitioning and their hair didn't grow b/c they touched it too much?

Oh no

I hope that's just a myth. I would definately be bald if that were true. I've always been plagued with the hand in hair disease. It doesn't matter if my hair is straight, curly, long or short. I have to fool around in it. Maybe the constant combing somehow stimulates growth kinda like brushing--I know, wishful thinking

Yep...like having only 4-6 inches of growth after two years. I think the hair probably grew, but was damaged. However, these people also had other unhealthy hair habits that could have been the culprits as well, so I don't think the short hair could TOTALLY be pinned on the HIF disease, but I don't think the HIF disease helped either.

I have this disease too. I have to wear a scarf/head wrap on my head 24/7 to stop touching my hair. I don't know what I'm going to do when I go back to work.

I have it bad too. Always measuring, twisting, rubbing, and massaging my hair and scalp. Right after my BC my scalp was sore from all of the time my hands were in my hair

I caught this disease about 3 mths ago. I think that the trigger was when I began taking "up close & personal" pics of my new growth... finger parting (for the cam) & feeling those sea sickening wavies & coils on my finger tips... (( exhaling & shaking my head

cuz I'm having withdrawls right now

Maybe, just maybe I can be cured
