Hello english isn't my home language so sorry. I'm doing my best here :)
My hair is damaged by colouring. I've 2c/3b natural hair.
I've got a problem. I do wash and go's (for a year now) and put my hair in a bun. My 'new growth' (healthy) is between APL and BSL and the rest of my hair is now between MBL and WL..meaning the hair that is damaged...my hair turns around in pieces like dreadlocks... why is that? I do moisturize (kimmaytube). Is it maybe the gel (curls in a bottle Curl Junkie) that i am using after sealing with vatika oil? Or do i need to do more intensive moisture treaments for my hair (with the steamer)

PLEASE HELP ME...:wallbash:

Do you have a photo of what you mean? I'm not sure I follow what it is your hair is doing. Are the hairs sticking together (matting)?

i can't upload pictures now :(

Yes i think you call it 'matted'... where my hair is still healthy the hair is full and bouncy and where the hair is damaged i get like 30 pieces of hair...like 30 pieces of DNA strands... Pff so frustrating

here is a picture as a example...see the ends? that is what happens to my hair when i get my hair out of the bun :(

Yes, that's matting. I am not sure what causes it but I imagine strands that aren't smooth are more likely to cling onto others. Products can also glue hair together if you use a lot and don't clarify. I am sure this has been discussed on the forum so if I find a thread on it, I'll be back. But hopefully those who have had this issue (I think relaxed hair can do that) might also know.

What is your regimen? How often do you wash your hair? What do you use? Do you ever do an ACV rinse? Please tell us the steps involved in your haircare. What shampoos, conditioners, styling products you use and how often.

Is your hair matting at the roots where the hair is healthy, at the damaged ends only, or all through the entire length?

it gets matted only on the damaged ends...not from the roots..

I co wash my hair twice a week

I do a prepoo with Vatika oil or Lush ' henna & Yasmine Fluff Eaze' (just started to use this one and it moisturizes really good)
I co wash with Herbal essences "long term relationship"

When i feel that i have build up i wash with" Curls" cleansing creme (once a week)
Clarify once a month with clarifying shampoo 'Curls'

Once every six weeks do a aphogee 2 step treatment followed up with Curl junkie Curl Rehab Moisture treatment

Style with:
Vatika oil first and then Curl junkie Curls in a Bottle gel over it.

Put my hair in a bun and that's it.
Everyday i moisturize with kimmaytube leave in condish

Do you comb through your hair on daily basis, from root to ends, to make sure that all tangles are removed? I used to getting matting when I let my hair get really tangled, especially when I did not remove the tangles prior to washing my hair. I no longer let my hair get to that point.

it doesn't get matted that it gets tangled...it just turns around each other... it looks like smooth dreads :)
I just use my fingers and pull each strand apart...1 minute work...that's not the problem but what i want to know is wat causes this?

I had a bad dye/highlights job 2 years ago...so that area is dry and brittle and needs extra care. For so far my hair retains lenght so i dont want to cut it off...

I only comb my hair when i have conditioner in it (in the shower)
No i dont comb on daily basis...that could lead to more breakage or am i wrong (on dry hair)?

OP sounds to me like the lower end of your hair is damaged and you may do well to consider trimming a little at a time till you get rid of it--after all, why would you want to hold onto damaged hair? Long hair that isn't full and healthy makes me think of rats' tails. I know you're not growing it for me but I'm sure I'm not alone who find thin ends unappealing, maybe even yucky.

Matting (which is what that photo you posted showed) occurs when hair is damaged and cuticles aren't smooth. It can also occur if hair is dry and needs moisture, but damaged hair is more prone to that than healthy hair. Which is why people with healthy hair have to force their hair to lock...and have to continually tighten the locs. Curly hair locks more easily than straight hair, and the tighter the curls, the more easily it locks, even when healthy due to the shape of the strands. Your hair doesn't sound like the kind to turn into locs easily and the fact that this is happening only on the damaged ends is proof that they really are in bad shape, maybe even beyond redemption.

Before you throw in the towel, could try using Roux Porosity Control products and then maybe a serum, taking care to separate the strands as you apply the serum so each strand is individually coated (less is more, but it just has to be meticulously applied). I would apply the serum to damp/wet hair and comb through. When I used to have relaxed hair, I found that applying John Frieda Frizz Ease Serum to damp hair would give me smooth hair that didn't clump or feel sticky when it dried. Porosity Control may not make much difference if the cuticles of the damaged hair are mostly gone but I think if you follow that with the serum, it might coat the strands and just make them smooth and thus less likely to mat/clump.

If you trim the damaged hair gradually, you can still enjoy the length for a while without having to waste time on hair that is really a lost cause. If you like the length you have now, just trim off a 1/2 inch or whatever length you grow a month, each month. Eventually you'll be rid of the bad hair w/o anyone even noticing you've been snipping away.

The info at this link might provide more info for you on hair damage and its causes so that you know what not to do to the new healthier hair: http://www.pgbeautygroomingscience.com/hair-damage.html

The locking process is not matting. It is hair weaving or knitting itself together to form strands, or ropes. You can cultivate locks to make the hair weave itself in a regular pattern or you can let hair do its own thing and it weaves itself in a freeform fashion. But it is not damaged hair. If your ends are healthy and have a tendency to want to lock you can prevent that by combing or brushing them out thoroughly. If they're damaged then you need to cut them off.

I get what you're saying but if you read OP's posts, her ends are not healthy but damaged. And it only they that are doing this weird "weaving" as you call it. I would understand it was her hair's tendency to do that if the whole length was doing that. But as it happens, it's only the ends that have been through the ringer that seem to be behaving this way.

Hello
thank you for the responds! That is the problem...it doesnt look thin and damaged...it's thinner than the new growth but that's normal because the hair gets older as it gets longer...
but i think i've solved my problem..it's 90% dry now and i braided it and did it in a bun...i just did my hair loose and the hair looks normal now.
i used long term relationship conditioner as a leave in and sealed with vatika oil...the ends are bouncy :)

THANK YOU SO MUCH
I just cut off half an inch. I do this every month untill i get rid of the ends.

just to be safe and to try it ( after watching youtube videos) i ordered the roux porosity (shampoo and conditioner..
Will have them i think tuesday and i'll try those with the HH as a leave in. It is important to bring the ends back to a pH of 4.5..i will let you know my experiences
