Hair Thinning due to the use of Birth control

Have any of you experience hair loss due to the use of birth control?

If so how long did it take you to bounce back and what did you do during that time to baby your hair?

I have lost allot of hair over the last 6 months and I just realized (with the help of my stylist) that it is a result of my taking Loestrin. I am in a weave and caring for my hair under it in the mean time. I don't have any breakage...and my hair is growing...I tght the weave would help with the shedding...but it didn't. :nono:

Sorry I haven't but it doesnt mean it doesn't happen. I am experiencing thinning also. Its see through now. I don't know if its from the low iron or something else like thyroid.

I took Loestrin years ago but I never had a problem with thinning hair. I would suggest that you talk to your doctor and maybe he/she can prescribe something else. I wish you the best and hope it gets better soon.

I know last year when I was on depo my temples went bald, I knew it was the culprit when 3 of my friends were balding in the same area. I still suffer from thin hair and edges which I think is hereditary but the problem got worse while on depo so I stopped the area is still an issue. Now I am back taking loestrin like I had for years I never thought it may be my issue with thinning over the years. This is the only thing I have not changed

There was someone recently who had that problem but it was when she went of the pill. I can't recall the name but she has a thread where her hair grew from fish oil or something like it. Perhaps she can be of help.

I came a couple months back and asked the same question. I was taking Loestrin first and then changed to Femcon...either way my hair continued to thin/shred a lot. Ultimately I stopped taking them. So now I'm just waiting for it to stop.

Hello Glam,

I am a healthcare professional and I wanted to let you know that Hair loss is a true side effect of not only Loestrin but all combination birth control pills. Combination birth control pills contain estrogen which is the cause of the hair loss. I have never heard of this happening with depo which is progesterone only but obviously it can happen as it did with the above poster:wallbash:. My advice would be to discontinue the birth control all together if possible and use barrier methods of birth control or to at least find a pill with less estrogen. There are two different strengths of loestrin one is 1.5/30 and the other is 1/20. if your on the higher dose maybe your physician can change you to the lower dose or to a completely different method all together.

The lowest dosage of estrogen is the NuvaRing vag insert. You may be interested in trying that.

I really hope this helps and Good luck!

Thanks for the advice ladies. Because of my high blood pressure, there are not many optuions for me with hormonal birth control. Nuva ring made me psychotic....the patch had me with stroke level BP and very bad headaches, Ortho Tri Cyclen had me sick to the stomach...and the list goes on.... Loestrin has been by far the worse. I have gained over 15 pounds, experience vaginal dryness, moodiness, depression(caught myself thinking about suicide for NO reason) and still have elevated BP readings at times.

When I figured out that it was also why my hair was shedding...I decided to stop. My hair also was shedding a time before...and now that I think about it...I was on the patch at that time. I will just use other methods (we have also used two methods) and just leave the BP alone. I guess I will get back on my MSM, Biotin, Fish Oil and perhaps consider Garlic Pills.

I was on Loestrin for 5 years. The whole time on it my hair was thick and grew really fast. It wasn't until I stopped it (and said no to any hormones) that I began to shed terribly. So I have had the opposite happen. Before BC ever entered the picture I had nice thick hair. I stopped it in April of last year.

I will say that I was an emotional mess on it though. Not myself and I thought it was everything else around me. As soon as I stopped I started to slowly feel like myself again. No more BC pills for me.:nono: Personally I don't even want to experiment with different doses/types.

I've been taking LoEstrin for over a year now and have no problems with it affecting my hair at all. Sorry for your problem.

Sorry to hear that...I have no symptoms on this at all.

Wow, I'm sorry you went through all that on birth control. But hey, maybe it's the Lord's way of telling you to become a quiverfull :lachen:. j/k

I am taking Levora and I had mild shedding and hair loss at the temples for about 2 months. After the second month, my hair started to grow back with the help of ayurvedic oils at the needed area and scalp massage. I plan to stop taking them at the end of the year though...I feel so sorry for my SO when I am having one of my moody moments!

I've had a friend who took the Depo shot & her temples thinned out very badly so she had to come off. Not sure how long it took for her hair to grow back but she just left it alone.

For those ladies that are or were taking Loestrin, were you taking the high dose or lose dose? My daughter is on Loestrin Fe 24 and I would like to be aware of all the side effects. Hair is breaking off some but I'm not sure if it is from the pills or the fact that she is transitioning. She has been on them for 4 months now and so far there is no weight gain or unusual moodiness.
